Daily Bible Reading “Cain Leaves Eden” (Genesis 4:16-26)

Genesis 4 16Cain Leaves Eden

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 4:16-26.  After Cain sinned against God and killed his brother, he left the presence of the LORD, as instructed, and went to dwell in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Even though Cain sinned against God, God still blessed him by allowing him to live and have a family. We are not told in this Scripture who Cain took to be his wife, only that he had relations with his wife; she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch, which means “dedicated.” Cain also built a city, and named the city after his son, Enoch.

Enoch had a son; he named Irad, which means “fleet.” Irad had a son, he named Mehujael, which means “smitten by God.” Mehujael had a son named Methusael, which means “who is of God.” Methusael had a son named Lamech, which means “powerful.”

Lamech had two wives: one of his wives was named Adah, and the other wife was called Zillah.

Adah gave birth to Jabal, which means “stream of water.” He was the chief of the people who lived in tents, and raised livestock.

His brother’s name was Jubal, which means “stream.” He was the inventor of musical instruments, such as the harp and organ.

Zillah, gave birth to Tubalcain, which means, “thou will be brought of cain.” He was an instructor of every metal craftsman who fabricated brass and iron. Zillah also gave birth to a daughter named Naamah, which means “loveliness.” Notice that Naamah is the first girl to be mentioned in this family.

Lamech told his wives, Adah and Zillah, listen to me: A young man tried to wound me, and in self-defense, I killed him. If the LORD will take vengeance for Cain seven times, surely, He will avenge me seventy-seven times.

These numbers are repeated in Matthew 18:21-22, “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, which they named him Seth. The name Seth means “compensation.” Eve said, “For God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”

There was also a son born to Seth, who was named Enos, which means “man.” At that time men began to proclaim the name of the LORD.

I find it interesting to see what some of the names mean, so I have included their meanings in this lesson for you. During biblical times the names were not chosen just because they liked the way it sounded. Many times the names they named their children had significant meanings.

In this day and age, we may not consider what the name means, as much as if we like the way it sounds. Maybe we should pay more attention to the names we give our children. We wouldn’t want to mark them with a negative connotation by what we name them.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 4:16-26

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

Things to think about:

  • Why did Cain leave Eden?
  • Where did Cain go when he left Eden?
  • What was the secret that Lamech told his wives?
  • How did God bless Adam and Eve in this Scripture?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we see your grace and mercy on Cain, even though he sinned against You. You still allowed him to live and have a family. We also see You blessed Adam and Eve with another son. Help us to realize that when we mess up, if we repent and ask for forgiveness, You are willing to forgive us. You are always there with open arms waiting for us to come back to You. Even though this is so, help us to strive to live holy and acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 by Deborah H. Bateman is 30th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book contains approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Daily Bible Reading “Cain – A Marked Man” (Genesis 4:9-15)

Genesis-4-9 Cain - A Marked ManCain – A Marked Man

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 4:9-15. In this passage, the LORD questioned Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” Cain answered, “I don’t know: Am I my brother’s keeper?” Cain just came right out and lied to the LORD. Surely, Cain didn’t think he could hide what he had done to his brother from the LORD! Are we ever guilty of trying to hide the things we do from God, even though we know that He knows all along?

God asked, “What have you done?” The voice of your brother’s blood cried unto me from the ground. God already knew what happened to Abel.

The LORD God told Cain, “Now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand; when you till the ground, it will no longer yield to you her strength. You will be a fugitive and a vagabond from this day forward.”

Cain cried out to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear.” Today, you have driven me from the face of the earth. You have also hidden your face from me. I will be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me.

The LORD declared to Cain, “If someone slays you, vengeance will be taken on him seven times.” The LORD put a mark on Cain, to prevent anyone who found him from taking his life.

God could have struck Cain dead, if He wanted to, but, He didn’t. He granted grace and mercy to Cain. He even put a price on Cain’s head to keep anyone else from killing him.

Sometimes when bad things happen we want to take revenge for them ourselves. In Romans 12:19 we are told, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 4:9-15

9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

Things to think about:

  • What did Cain tell God when God asked him about his brother?
  • What sentence did God pass down to Cain for killing his brother?
  • What was Cain’s response?
  • Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt like taking vengeance on someone who had done something wrong?
  • What kind of mark did God put on Cain to keep others from killing him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this passage help us to realize that there is a price to be paid for any wrong that we do. Help us to know that it is not our place to take vengeance on others for the wrong that they do. Give us strength when dealing with situations like this. Help us to come to You for comfort and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Cain and Abel” (Genesis 4:1-8)

Genesis Cain and AbelCain and Abel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 4:1-8. In chapter four we learn that Adam knew his wife, Eve; she conceived, and gave birth to a son which they named Cain. The name Cain means “possession.” Eve said, “I have gotten a man from the LORD.”

Eve conceived again and gave birth to a second son, which they named Abel. The name Abel means “breath.” The boys grew up and Abel became a shepherd, and Cain was a farmer. Considering the occupations of the men, we may conclude that Cain was physically the stronger of the two men.

In due time, Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground which he had worked. Abel also brought an offering of the best first born from his flock.

The LORD respected Abel and his offering: but God didn’t have respect for Cain and his offering. We aren’t told why God rejected Cain’s offering. Could it be because Cain’s offering was from the ground, which God had cursed when Adam sinned? Could it be because a blood sacrifice was more acceptable to God? Cain became very angry and upset. Cain became jealous because his offering was rejected, while Abel’s was accepted.

The LORD asked Cain, Why art you angry? Why are you sad? God told Cain, If you do well, won’t you be accepted? If you don’t do well, sin will lie at the door and to you will be his desire, and you will rule over him.

One day Cain talked with Abel his brother and while they were in the field, Cain attacked Abel, his brother, and killed him. Can you imagine what would cause a man to kill his brother? Personally, I find this hard to understand. I love my brother and sisters and can’t imagine being that angry with them. Things like this do happen in families and it has to be devastating to the family. Can you imagine the heart-break that Adam and Eve must have felt?

Abel hadn’t done anything to Cain. Cain was jealous of Abel because God accepted his offering. In Matthew 18:21-22, “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

Jealousy of this kind not only happens in families, it can happen at work, school, among friends, colleagues, or even in churches. It is one of those things that the enemy likes to use to cause division among us.

We are told in Matthew 5:23-24, “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”

Hate, anger, jealousy, and resentment are like cancers that will eat at you, if you let it. It will cause you to do things that you thought you’d never do. Is there something you need to make right with someone today so you can live at peace with God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 4:1-8

1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Things to think about:

  • Who was the first-born child of Adam and Eve?
  • Who was the second-born child of Adam and Eve?
  • What were the occupations of the two men?
  • Why was there jealousy between the two sons?
  • What ended up happening because of this jealousy?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage we see the power of anger, jealousy, and resentment. Help us not to hold grudges against others. Help us to be forgiving toward others. Forgive us of the times we have failed in this area of our lives and help us to do better with it in the future. Remind us of the story of Cain and Abel when we need to remember this lesson. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Adam is Extradited” (Genesis 3:20-24)

Adam ExtraditedAdam is Extradited

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 3:20-24. In this passage we are reminded that Adam named his wife Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

We also learn that the LORD God made coats of skins for Adam and his wife, to clothe them, so they wouldn’t have to hide anymore because of being naked.

The LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil.” God was afraid that Adam would stretch out his hand, and eat from the tree of life as well, and live forever.

The LORD drove the man out of the Garden of Eden, to work the ground from where he was taken. Can you imagine how Adam felt to be removed from this beautiful garden that God had prepared for him?

Can you imagine how Eve felt? She may have thought this was all her fault. Have you ever felt like God was mad or upset with you because of something you did wrong?

Instead of the man overseeing the garden as originally planned, God placed Cherubims at the east of the Garden of Eden, and a blazing sword which turned in every direction, to guard the tree of life.

Like Adam and Eve were tempted to sin in the garden, we are all tempted to sin, but 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us with every temptation there is a way for an escape, we just need to look for it.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Reading and studying the Word of God will help us to be more aware of our sin. It will also help us to realize when temptation comes our way. If we listen, it can keep us from giving in to the temptations we face.

When Jesus was here on earth, He was tempted like we are, but He was perfect and didn’t give in to the temptation. (See Hebrews 4:14-16)

If we got what we truly deserved as punishment for our sins, it would be death, but we can have forgiveness through repentance and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior as mentioned in Romans 6:23.

Let’s do away with the weights of sin that weigh us down, and run the race of life with patience and endurance looking to Jesus and God to give us strength and see us through to finish this race of life well. (See Hebrews 12:1-2)

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 3:20-24

20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Things to think about:

  • What did Adam name his wife? Why?
  • What did God do about Adam and Eve’s nakedness?
  • Why did God drive Adam from the garden?
  • What did God put in the garden to protect it?
  • How can we win the race of life?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this lesson, we see more of the consequences that Adam and Eve experienced because of their disobedience and are humbled. Father, please forgive us of the times we have disobeyed You. Help us to always consider Your will for our lives. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who was tempted as we are, but didn’t sin. Help us to look for a way to escape when we are faced with temptation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Consequences of Sin” (Genesis 3:9-19)

Genesis - Consequences of SinConsequences of Sin

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 3:9-19. In this passage, we find that the LORD God was looking for Adam. He called Adam, and said to him, “Where are you?”

Adam replied, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

God asked Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree, that I commanded you not to eat?”

The man blamed the woman saying, “The woman that you provided for me gave me the fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

The LORD God questioned the woman, “What have you done?” The woman blamed the serpent saying, “The serpent enticed me, and I ate the fruit from the tree.”

The LORD God told the serpent, “Because you did this, you are cursed above all cattle, and all beast of the field. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

The LORD God told the woman, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception; in sorrow you will birth children; and your desire will be to your husband, and he will rule over you.”

The LORD God spoke to Adam saying, “Because you have listened to your wife, and have eaten the fruit of the tree, which I commanded you not to eat: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you will eat of it all the days of your life. The land will produce thorns and thistles; and you will eat the herb of the field; through hard work and the sweat of your brow you will eat bread, until you return to the ground; for out of it you were taken: from dust you came, and to the earth you will return.”

Adam and the woman had sinned against God. God let them know that there are consequences when we are disobedient and sin against Him. These consequences not only affected them, but also still affect us today.

We are reminded in Romans 3:23-24, that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and the only redemption for our sins is through accepting Jesus Christ as Savior.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 3:9-19

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Things to think about:

  • Why were Adam and his wife hiding from God?
  • Who did Adam blame for his disobedience?
  • Who did the woman blame for her disobedience?
  • What punishment did God give the serpent for his part in this sinful act?
  • What did God tell the woman the consequences would be for her disobedience?
  • What were the consequences given to Adam for his disobedience?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage we see that there are consequences for sin and disobedience to You. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who came into this world and gave His life on the cross to redeem us from our sins. Help us to do Your will. Forgive us of all the times we have failed You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

By Deborah H. Bateman

About the book:

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
