Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is My Deliverer” (Psalm 18:1-50)

The LORD is My Deliverer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 18:1-50. Psalm 18 is a Psalm of David. David was a servant of the LORD. This Psalm was written as a song of praise and thanks to the LORD for delivering David from his enemies, and from the hand of Saul, the king, who wanted to kill him. David admits that the LORD is his strength.

He says, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.” What does David mean by this? Notice that when David uses the word “my,” he claims God as his deliver, strength, etc. Can you claim Him as your God in that way?

David states that the LORD delivered him from the wrath of the people, and made him the head of the heathen. David had no idea that they would serve him. They obeyed David and submitted to his commands. He said the outsider will die away and be frightened out of their secure spaces. David praises the LORD saying, “The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.”

David gave glory and honor to God for taking revenge upon his enemy and causing them to submit to him. The LORD delivered David from his enemies and he made sure to give thanks and sing praises to the LORD for what He did for him. The LORD delivered King David and gave him great victory. He showed mercy on David as His chosen one, both to him and to his descendants forever.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 18:1-3

1 [To the chief Musician, [A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said,]] I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.
2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

***For the sake of space I didn’t include all the verses of this chapter, but it would be good if you would like to take out your Bible and read David’s description of how the Lord delivered him from his enemies.***

Psalm 18: 43-50

43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
44 As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.
45 The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.
46 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.
48 He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
50 Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.

Things to think about:

We probably have never been in a situation like David.
What kind of enemies do we face today? In what ways has the LORD delivered you?
How did you give God praise for doing so?
In what ways do you give thanks daily for the LORD’S protection?
What are some ways that we can show the LORD that we appreciate Him and everything He does for us?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 18. We see that David was singing and praising You for delivering him from his enemies. Lord, we thank You for Your deliverance for us also. Help us to always sing and praise Your holy name for what You do for us. You are our rock and our redeemer and we will praise You forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear the Right, Oh LORD” (Psalm 17:1-15)

Hear the Right, Oh LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 17:1-15. Psalm 17 is a Prayer of David. David cries out to God to hear his prayer. David speaks the truth of his heart to God in his prayer. David’s prayer was sincere. He wasn’t trying to impress God with his words, but was sharing the concerns of his heart with God.

David asked God for justice. He asked God to look at both sides of the situation and make an honest judgment. David acknowledges that he can’t hide anything from God. David knew that God had examined his heart and knew his desires and intent. David decided to do what was right in the eyes of God.

Do we ask God to examine our hearts? Do we do what is right or do we ask Him to do what we want Him to do for us regardless of who is right in any given situation? Can we be confident as David was to ask God to examine our hearts, or are we afraid to tell God to examine us because of the sin in our hearts?

David said, because of God’s presence in his life, he had been kept safe from the enemy. This is a plea for God to watch over him and protect him from the enemy. He acknowledges that God protects those who follow Him under the shadow of His wings. As a mother hen would protect her babies under her wings, God covers us and protects us from the fiery darts of the enemy.

David asks God to protect him from the wicked that were lurking about him like a lion waiting to attack his prey. David asked God to arise and defeat the enemy for his sake. David asked God to watch over him while he slept. David knew God loved him because of the way God watched over and protected him. Have you put your faith and trust in God and in His Son, Jesus?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 17:1-15

1 [[A Prayer of David.]] Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.
3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
5 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
6 I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.
10 They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;
12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:
14 From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Things to think about:

What was David’s concern in this Psalm?
What did David ask God to do for him?
Do you ask God to watch over you while you sleep?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for the sincerity of the prayer of David. Help us to put our complete trust in You. Watch over us and protect us from the enemy. Help us to do what is right in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Preserve Me, Oh God” (Psalm 16:1-11)

Preserve Me, Oh God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 16:1-11. Psalm 16 is a Psalm of David. This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm. It is believed that David is referring to Jesus in this Psalm as well as himself. David cries out to God to preserve him. He declares that he puts his trust in God.

Have you told the LORD lately that He is your LORD, as David did? How do you think it makes God feel when we tell Him how much we love Him? If you are a parent or grandparent, you can compare this to how you feel when your children or grandchildren crawl up in your lap and tell you how much they love you.

The Psalmist says he won’t even say the names of the false gods. David’s treasure was the LORD. The LORD satisfied David’s soul. God’s blessings were David’s heritage.

Have you ever woken up at night with a song on your heart or a Scripture running through your mind and Spirit? David says the LORD gives him counsel day and night.

David continuously set the LORD before himself and his needs. David had faith that the LORD was at his right hand to comfort and protect him. He knew that God would direct him on the path of life.

David says there is fullness of joy, even in the midst of our suffering and pain. When we put our faith and trust in God we can have joy in our hearts, despite the troubles in our lives.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 16:1-11

1 [[Michtam of David.]] Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;
3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Things to think about:

What was David’s cry to the LORD?
What kind of heritage did David say he had?
How can we have that same inheritance?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for the rich inheritance we have in You. Help us to show our love for You and do Your will. Help us to find joy, peace, and comfort in having You by our side, as David did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Good Shepherd Divides His Sheep

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:31-46. In this Scripture, Jesus is talking to the disciples and tells them that when the Son of Man comes, and the angels with Him, He’ll sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be before Him and He’ll divide them as a shepherd divides His sheep from the goats. He’ll put the sheep on His right hand and the goats on His left hand. Are you a sheep or a goat?

To the sheep, who are on His right hand, He’ll say: “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was hungry, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

The righteous ones asked when they saw Him, and did all those things, and He told them: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

He said to the ones on the left side, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was hungry, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.”

They asked Him when they saw him and didn’t do these things. He told them, “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Therefore, you will go into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

This is a harsh reality, but, we need to realize one day this is truly going to happen. Are you prepared? Do you know if you will be on the right hand or the left? Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? If not, I pray you will do so before it is too late.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:31-46

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Things to think about:

Are you prepared to meet the Master?
What does Jesus say to the sheep?
What does Jesus say to the goats?
Do you have compassion for others who are in need?
Ask God to help you to see the need of others and to respond to their needs.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help us as we read this Scripture, to know in our hearts whether we are the sheep or the goats. We want to spend eternity with You in heaven. I pray for the ones who haven’t accepted You yet, that You would draw them to Yourself before it is eternally too late. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Parable of the Talents” (Matthew 25:14-30)

Parable of the Talents

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:14-30. In this Scripture, Jesus is telling the disciples another parable about the kingdom of heaven. He says it is like a man who was traveling to a far country.

The man called his servants and gave them his goods to keep until he returned. He gave each one of them according to their ability. One he gave five talents, one two, and one he gave one talent. What do you think the servants did with their talents while the man was gone?

A talent was made of silver and each one weighed fifty to eighty pounds. When the man returned he found the man who had five talents doubled his, the one who had two talents doubled his, but, the one who had only one talent buried his talent in the ground. Why do you think he buried it in the ground?

He said he was afraid, so instead of taking what his lord gave him and trying to make more with it, he hid it in the ground. Isn’t it funny how we let fear cripple us?

The man was happy with the ones who doubled their talents and told them he would give them more. But the one who buried his displeased the lord.

So, the Lord told his servants to take his talent from him and give it to the one who had ten talents. Then he wanted them to cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness.

Remember, this is a parable about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus went away and He is coming back someday. He left each one of His servants with talents and we’ll all be accountable to Him for how we use those talents. Everything we have He provided and every gift we have He gave us. So, we need to make sure we are using our money, our time, and our talents in a way that will honor Him when He returns.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:14-30

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Things to think about:

Which of the men were most responsible with their talents?
Which of the men were least responsible with their talents?
What did the man do with the one who was least responsible?
How are you using the talents God has given you for Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this parable of the talents, help us examine ourselves and see how we are using what You have given to us. Help us to use what you have provided for us wisely, so at Jesus’ return, He’ll be pleased with us. Help us to not be hearers of the Word only, but doers of the Word, as well. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD, Amen.
