Daily Bible Reading “Save, LORD” (Psalm 20:1-9)

Today Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 20:1-9. Psalm 20 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David starts this Psalm by saying, “The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble.” Don’t you want God to hear you when you’re in trouble?

He calls on God to defend and send help from the sanctuary and strengthen them from Zion. Do you ever feel like you need strength to carry on? God can give you the strength you need. Many times we turn to our loved ones to help us in our times of trouble, but they may be busy and not have time to be bothered with our problems. God is always available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He is never too busy to hear our cries for help.

David asks God to remember their offerings and their burnt sacrifices. He declares that they will rejoice at the salvation of the LORD. He asks for God to answer all of their petitions. David says he knows God saves His anointed.

God sent Jesus, His Son, to die on the cross so He could become our Savior by being the sacrifice God accepted as redemption for our sins. We can trust in Him to forgive us of our sins and give us salvation. We can have victory through Jesus. We can be saved from the enemy. Have you put your faith and trust in Jesus as your Savior? If not, He will hear your cry. Call out to Him today.

David says some people trust in their military, but we put our trust in God. God is our provider. He is our protector and defender. He saves us from the enemy. Others are defeated, but we are lifted up. David’s last cry of this Psalm is, “Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.” Imagine the people of Israel singing this Psalm as a prayer.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 20:1-9

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;
3 Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.
4 Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.
5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.
6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.
9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you cry out to God in times of trouble?
  • Share some of the times in your life when God has saved you from trouble.
  • What are some times of trouble in which we can pray for fellow believers?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You that we can call on You not only when we are in trouble, but any time day or night. You are always available and ready to hear from us. Help us to turn our troubles over to You and not try to handle them on our own. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

Daily Bible Reading “The Heavens Declare His Glory” (Psalm 19:1-14)

The Heavens Declare His Glory

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 19:1-14.
Psalm 19 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. I love this Psalm. David talks about how the heavens and the earth declare the glory of God and show His handiwork.

We see God’s work in creation everywhere we look, from the earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars. They don’t speak, but their very existence show the glory of God. When we look at all the creatures God created and all their different attributes we see His handiwork.

John 1:1-4 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Psalm 19:7-11 tells us about the law of the LORD. Some of the words that the Psalmist uses to describe the law are: perfect, sure, and right. They are standards that God set forth for us.

David asks, “Who can understand his own errors?” We have to accept the fact that we are all sinners and we need Jesus to save us from our sins.

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 19:14 which says, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” What a great prayer for all of us.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 19:1-14

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

 

Things to think about:

  • How do the heavens declare the glory of God?
  • What was the purpose of the law?
  • What do the words in verse 14 mean to you?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for Your creation; the heavens, earth, sun, moon, stars, and all the earth that declare Your glory. Help us to give thanks to You for all of Your provision. Let the words of our mouths, and the meditation of our hearts, be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, our strength, and our redeemer. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Preserve Me, Oh God” (Psalm 16:1-11)

Preserve Me, Oh God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 16:1-11. Psalm 16 is a Psalm of David. This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm. It is believed that David is referring to Jesus in this Psalm as well as himself. David cries out to God to preserve him. He declares that he puts his trust in God.

Have you told the LORD lately that He is your LORD, as David did? How do you think it makes God feel when we tell Him how much we love Him? If you are a parent or grandparent, you can compare this to how you feel when your children or grandchildren crawl up in your lap and tell you how much they love you.

The Psalmist says he won’t even say the names of the false gods. David’s treasure was the LORD. The LORD satisfied David’s soul. God’s blessings were David’s heritage.

Have you ever woken up at night with a song on your heart or a Scripture running through your mind and Spirit? David says the LORD gives him counsel day and night.

David continuously set the LORD before himself and his needs. David had faith that the LORD was at his right hand to comfort and protect him. He knew that God would direct him on the path of life.

David says there is fullness of joy, even in the midst of our suffering and pain. When we put our faith and trust in God we can have joy in our hearts, despite the troubles in our lives.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 16:1-11

1 [[Michtam of David.]] Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;
3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

 

Things to think about:

  • What was David’s cry to the LORD?
  • What kind of heritage did David say he had?
  • How can we have that same inheritance?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for the rich inheritance we have in You. Help us to show our love for You and do Your will. Help us to find joy, peace, and comfort in having You by our side, as David did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Who Will Dwell in Your Holy Hill” (Psalm 15:1-5)

Who Will Dwell in Your Holy Hill

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 15:1-5. Psalm 15 is a Psalm of David. David asks the LORD who will abide in His tabernacle. Who will dwell in the holy hill of Zion?

The answer is:

  • Those who walk upright and whose works are righteous
  • Those who tell the truth
  • Those who don’t gossip about others
  • Those who do good to their neighbors
  • Those who despise evil
  • Those who stand by their commitments
  • Those who don’t take bribes
  • Those who can’t be bought

He honors those who fear the LORD. He or she is a person of honor and lives in obedience to God’s will and God’s Word.

James 2:18 tells us, “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” Yes, salvation is a free gift of God, but those who are saved; their actions should show their right standing with God.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 15:1-5

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.
4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

  • What was David’s question to the LORD in this Scripture?
  • What was the LORD’S response to David’s question?
  • What can we learn from this Scripture?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to live in a way that brings honor and glory to You. Help us to speak the truth. Help us to live peaceably with our neighbors. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Fool Says There Is No God” (Psalm 14:1-7)

  1. The Fool Says There Is No God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 14:1-7. Psalm 14 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David says, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” The Hebrew word for fool is “nabal.” There is actually a person in the Bible named Nabal who is mentioned in 1 Samuel 25. Can you imagine having a name that means fool?

Because of their unbelief fools live corrupt lives. They’ve done works that are an abomination to God. David said there were none who did good deeds. David is showing us the corruption of the world. We may feel like David is describing the world today, but the worst may be yet to come.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Romans 3:12 says, “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”

Isaiah 64:6 reminds us, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

Those who don’t know God don’t know how to live right. They are ignorant of the ways of God. Even we, as people of faith, who do know God, struggle in this life to live righteously before God. Thank God for His Son, Jesus, who came and died to be the sacrifice for our sins.

The LORD looked down from heaven to earth on all of humanity to see if there were any who understood, and sought after God. When He looked down He saw that they had all turned aside, and had become morally corrupt. He discovered that there were none who were doing good, not even one. How do you think this made the LORD feel?

David asks God if all the evildoers were ignorant. David said, the evil eat God’s people like they eat bread and don’t even call on the name of the LORD. They shamed the counsel of the poor. The LORD is the refuge of those who believe in Him. He is our protector, our shelter from danger, our provider.

David’s heart’s cry was that the salvation of the LORD would have come out of Zion. He declared that Jacob will rejoice and all of Israel will celebrate when the LORD brings back the captivity of His people to Jerusalem.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 14:1-7

1 [To the chief Musician, [A Psalm of David.]] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

 

Things to think about:

  • Who is considered to be a fool according to this Scripture?
  • What did the LORD see when He looked down from heaven?
  • What will cause rejoicing as mentioned in verse seven?
  • Have you put your faith and trust in God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We learn that those who say there is no God are fools. Help us to know that You are the only one, true God. Help us to have faith and trust in You. Help us to find refuge in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
