Daily Bible Reading “Go Work in my Vineyard” (Matthew 20:1-16)

Go Work in my Vineyard

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 20:1-16. In this Scripture, Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like this story about a man who went out to hire people to work in his vineyard. He made an agreement with the laborers to work for a penny a day (which was considered a day’s wages during that time). Can you imagine working for a penny a day?

The man went out again at the third, sixth, ninth, and eleventh hours (9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., and 5 p.m.) and found others standing in the marketplace and told them to go work in his vineyard and he would pay them whatever was right.

At the end of the day, the vineyard owner calls to his steward and tells him to call the laborers and give them their hire, beginning with the last ones he hired to the first ones he hired. All of the men received a penny.

When the steward got to the first man, he complained because he thought he should receive more, but the owner of the vineyard told him that he received what they agreed upon. The owner tells him he has done him no wrong: “Is your eye evil, because I am good? The last shall be first and the first shall be last; many are called, few are chosen.”

Every soul is precious to God, whether they have been saved for twenty years or two days. Everyone who is saved will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. What if God gave us what we deserved?

The Bible says the harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Has God called you to work in His vineyard? What can you do? What can you contribute? If you are not sure, ask God to show you how He can use you to further His kingdom.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 20:1-16

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

 

Things to think about:

  • How is Jesus pictured in this Scripture?
  • Do you find it strange that those who were hired last were paid the same as those who were hired first?
  • Of what is this Scripture representative?
  • What does the Scripture mean when it says, “The last will be first and the first will be last?”


Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture which lets us know that every soul is precious to You. We thank You that You are not a respecter of persons, but You love us all equally. Help us to be more like You and not be looking at what everybody else is doing, but only be concerned with our relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Thou Art Worthy” (Revelation 5:1-14)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Revelation 5:1-14. :
I don’t claim to know everything about the prophesy of the Bible, but there is something in this Scripture I wanted to share with you since we have been talking about praising God and the Lord, Jesus Christ.

John is describing a scene that he saw. He says he sees Him who sits on the throne which is believed to be God with a book that is sealed with seven seals. He hears an angel proclaiming, “Who is worthy to open the book?” No one is found worthy, which makes John cry, but an elder tells John to behold the Lion of Judah who is worthy to open the book.

Jesus is referred to as the Lion of Judah, the Messiah, and the lamb that was slain. The lion is a symbol of His strength, boldness, and courageous. As the lion is the king of all the beasts, Jesus is the king of kings. The lion also represents His vigilance. In the Old Testament Jesus was also known as the son of David and the root of David, since He was from David’s blood line.

Read the Scripture and look at the way people worshipped and praise Jesus. This is what I wanted you to see from this Scripture. How can we use this example to worship and praise Him? The Bible tells us that the day will come when every knee will bow and worship Him, but we don’t want to wait until then. How can we worship Him daily? Does this Scripture help you to see that He deserves our worship and praise?

In the book of Esther the Jewish people set up a special day called PURIM to celebrate their victory through God. Are there any special days or ways in your family that you celebrate God for who He is and what He has done in your life? It is important that we teach our children to praise and worship God through our example. How can we better honor both God and Jesus Christ through praise and worship?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Revelation 5: 1-14

1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

 

Things to think about:

  • What did you learn from this lesson about worshiping and praising God and the Lord, Jesus Christ?
  • Have you accepted Jesus as the sacrifice for your sins?
  • Can you see yourself in this scene?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture, where we see how the people worshiped You and Your Son. Help us to learn from this example. Thank You for Your Son, who was sacrificed for our sins. Help us to honor Him and praise Him, for He is worthy. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God’s Favor” (Psalm 44:1-26) PURIM Celebration

God’s Favor

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 44:1-26. The Psalmist says they heard from their fathers how God helped them to defeat the enemy and drive them out of the land. They didn’t do it on their own accord, but by the favor of God. Have you ever been in a position where you knew it was God’s favor that gave you victory?

When we look at this Scripture and we look at other Scriptures in the Bible, we see how God’s favor on people’s lives changed the outcome. We can look back and see things that happened in our lives that were devastating, but somehow God brought us through them. Somehow He took what the enemy meant for evil in our life and turned it to good. God used it for His honor and glory to further His kingdom.

In the book of Esther it was God’s favor that changed the circumstances of the death sentence for the Jewish people and helped them to defeat the enemy who sought to destroy them. The Bible tells us the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Christ came that we might have life to the fullest; abundant, and overflowing. Don’t let the enemy steal your joy in life. We can’t fight him with our own strength. Let God fill your life with His presence, His favor, His grace, His mercy and His love.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 44:1-26

1 [[To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.]] We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, [what] work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you have the favor of God on your life?
  • Can you look back in your life and see where God made a difference in your life?
  • How can you use those experiences to move your faith forward knowing if God helped you in the past He will help you with whatever is going on in your life now? Turn it all over to Him.


Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to seek Your face and turn to You for deliverance. Help us to keep serving You and loving You no matter what the circumstances of life are. Give us favor and help us to win the battle over the enemy. Redeem us for Your sake and help us to give You honor and glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “What is PURIM?” (Esther 9:26-32)

What is PURIM?

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Esther 9:26-32. PURIM is a Jewish holiday which was established during the days of the book of Esther to commemorate God’s deliverance of the Jewish people.

It is a day of celebration where the book of Esther is read in the synagogues. There are parties where people dress up in costumes. They give gifts to the poor and to each other. It is a day of celebration including big family feasts.

The PURIM celebration has been passed down from generation to generation and is still celebrated today. PURIM is celebrated on the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar according to the Hebrew calendar.

Therefore, the date changes from year to year according to Gregorian calendar. They also make cookies called Hamantaschen, which may be called “Haman’s Hats” or ”Haman’s Ears.”

Have you ever been to a PURIM Celebration? Why not plan to have one at the end of this Bible study? It would be especially fun if you are doing this Bible study with a group.

But, you could have a PURIM Celebration with your family. I have included some suggestions for your PURIM Celebration along with a recipe for Hamantaschen cookies in the back of this book.

I have never been interested in history that much, but since doing these Bible studies and learning how there are traditions and other things which have been passed down from generation to generation since biblical times I have become more interested in history, especially biblical history. Do you find biblical history interesting?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Esther 9:26-32

26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,

27 The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;

28 And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

30 And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,

31 To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.

32 And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you find it interesting that special days which were established in biblical times are still celebrated today?
  • What are some other holidays that were established in biblical times that are still celebrated today?
  • What holidays do you celebrate and why do you celebrate them?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the book of Esther and the lessons we learn from reading and studying it. We thank You that we can see Your sovereignty throughout the book. Thank You that we see there are certain days appointed in biblical times which are still celebrated today, such as PURIM. Help us to know You are in control and You will work things out for our good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Queen Vashti’s Fall” (Esther 1:10-22)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Esther 1:10-22. It is now day seven of the king’s feast, which he was giving for everybody in Shushan. The men had been drinking as much as they pleased of the finest royal wine for a week. I can imagine they weren’t feeling any pain, as they must have been pretty intoxicated at this point.

King Xerxes got the idea that since he had shown off all his other trappings of the kingdom he wanted to show off the queen, because she was so beautiful. He tells his seven chamberlains to go and tell Queen Vashti that he wants her to come, wearing her royal crown and show off her beauty to all the princes. At the very least he wanted her to uncover her face, which wasn’t custom at this time, but some believe he wanted her to come before them wearing nothing but the royal crown.

Queen Vashti refused to come. The king got very mad and his anger boiled up in him. Can you blame Vashti for not following the command of parading herself around in front of a room full of drunken men?

Remember, not only had she not submitted to her husband as the law commanded, but she refused the order of the king. The Scripture does say that wives should submit to their husbands, but if they want you to do something unethical, illegal or something against God, I believe you have the right to refuse.

The king was so mad that Queen Vashti refused his command he asked the wise men, which were the seven princes of Persia and Media, what they could legally do to the queen to punish her for her disobedience.

Memucan spoke up and said Vashti not only did wrong to the king, but to the princes and all the people he governed. He was afraid when all the women of the provinces heard what Vashti did they would rebel against their husbands, also. He suggested the king send out a decree saying Vashti would no longer be queen, because of her disobedience to the king and the king would choose a replacement for her. He thought this would make the other women of the region realize they had to honor, respect and submit to their husbands.

The king and princes agreed with Memucan, so they sent out a decree to everyone in the king’s provinces, in every language, saying every man should rule in his own house.

Esther 1:10-22

10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13 Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
14 And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;
15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17 For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20 And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22 For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever been asked to do something that was against your morals, as Queen Vashti was?
  • How did you respond?
  • Do you blame Queen Vashti for not obeying the king’s request?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture help us to see drinking too much wine can cause all kinds of trouble. Help us as wives to submit to our husbands as unto the Lord. But help us to know where the boundaries are. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
