Hear My Prayer, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 55:1-23. Psalm 55 is a Psalm of David to the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, (a song or poem of contemplation). David calls out to God to listen to his prayer and not to hide from his pleas for favor.

David was restless and anxious because of his enemies who constantly taunted and threatened him. His heart hurt and he wished he could fly like a dove, far away in the desert to be at peace.

David asked God to destroy his enemies and divide their tongues because they had caused violence and strife in the city. He said they walked around the walls day and night doing mischievous things and causing sorrow in the city. Wickedness, deceit, and treachery never departed from her streets.

If the people threatening and slandering David had been his enemies, he could have borne the abuse, but his own friends challenged him, which caused him much grief and sorrow. Have you ever experienced having your friends turn their backs on you? Or find out they’re not really on your side? Have you even had people at church turn against you? David responded by calling on the LORD.

David did not have mercy on them when he asked God to let death overtake them quickly, and let them go straight to hell. David was tired of their wickedness.

David said as for him, he cried out to God morning, night, and at noon. He had confidence that the LORD heard his cries and would save him.

David declared that God had delivered his soul in peace from the battle that was against him. He knew that God heard his pleas, and would afflict those who came against him because they didn’t fear God.

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.” David had confidence in God that he would take care of his enemies. He knew that God wouldn’t let these deceitful men continue to live like this. David trusted God completely to protect him from those who had turned their back on him.

I have had times like David, haven’t you? When I became a Christian author, I thought all my family, friends, and church family would support me completely. That was not necessarily true. I have had complete strangers send me ugly emails telling me to stop sharing God’s Word. I have had family members say cutting remarks about me being on the computer so much. I have had friends who stopped following me on social media. Some of the people I thought would support me the most have turned their backs on me.

Sometimes people are jealous when you succeed at doing something, or they may think or even say, “Who do they think they are.” I know I’m not perfect, but I strive to do what the LORD wants me to do. I’d love to have everybody’s support, but I know that’s not realistic. All I can do is do what I think the LORD wants me to and let Him deal with the rest. Don’t let anybody stop you from doing what you feel the Lord wants you to do.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 55:1-23

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Things to think about:

Was David’s battle with his enemy in this Scripture or was it with someone who was supposed to be his friend? How do we know?
What did David want God to do with those who were opposing him?
Has anything like this ever happened to you? If so, when?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Psalms we see that David was distraught. He poured his heart out to You and begged for Your help. Help us to know that You are always there for us and when life is closing in we can call out to You. Help us to have faith that You will hear and answer our prayers. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “God is My Deliverer” (Psalm 54:1-7)

God is My Deliverer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 54:1-7. Psalm 54 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician for stringed instruments. The Ziphims, who were the people of Ziph, went to Saul and told him that David was hiding among them.

David cries out, “Hear my prayer, O God.” Strangers had risen up against him and oppressors were seeking his soul. David declares that God is his helper. He has faith in God that He would take care of his enemies. David declares he will praise God for His deliverance. Have you ever been in a position like David in which you needed God to deliver you?

The story of David hiding from Saul in Ziph is recorded in 1 Samuel 26. Since this lesson is short, why not turn in your Bible and read the background story of this psalm? It will give you a better understanding of what David was going through. You will also see how God led David from place to place to protect him from his enemies.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 54:1-7

1 [[To the Chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us? Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Things to think about:

How many times has God delivered you from the enemy?
How did you give God praise and glory for His deliverance?
In what ways do you think of God as your helper?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 54. It reminds us that even when we are in trouble and the enemy has sought to destroy us, You are our deliverer. You are our helper. Help us to remember to praise You for Your protection over us as Your people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Create in Me a Clean Heart” (Psalm 51:1-19)

Create in Me a Clean Heart

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 51:1-19. You may wonder why I included a lesson from Psalm 51 in the midst of the study of the book of 2 Samuel, but this is David’s response to his circumstances during this time.

Psalm 51 is a Psalm of David, after he’d been with Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan confronted him. The story of David and Bathsheba is recorded in 2 Samuel 11-12. In Psalm 51 David cries out to God for forgiveness. He confesses his sin to God and asks God to cleanse him. Have you asked God to forgive you of your sins?

David asks God to cleanse his heart and create a right spirit in him. He begs God not to turn away from him or to take the Holy Spirit from him. He asks God to restore to him the joy of his salvation. David declares he will praise God despite his shortcomings.

David says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” God wants us to come to Him and ask for His forgiveness for our sins. He wants us to be obedient and do the things that are right in His sight. God loves us unconditionally, but when we fail to meet His expectations we need to repent and turn from our sins.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 51:1-19

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.]] Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Things to think about:

Is there anything in your life you need to ask for God’s forgiveness?
Are you in constant fellowship with God?
Have you received the joy of salvation?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to ask for Your forgiveness of our sins. Help us to be obedient to Your Word. Help us to desire to be in fellowship with You constantly. Create in us a clean heart. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Glorify Thy Name” (Psalm 50:16-23)

Glorify Thy Name

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 50:16-23. In this Bible study lesson, we will study the Scripture in the second half of Psalm 50. In the first part of Psalm 50 we saw the promise that God will return, and it was mostly addressed to believers. This portion of the Scripture talks to unbelievers.

God says the wicked hate instruction. They steal, lie, and slander other people, and many other things. He addresses them saying they thought He would be silent and leave them to their destructive ways, but He reminds them that He will judge them for their wicked ways and unbelief.

He declares that those who offer praise glorify Him. He says those whose conversation is right will see the salvation of God. Have you received the salvation of God through His Son, Jesus Christ?

In this world there are both wicked people and those who believe in God. As you read the Bible you will discover how God honors His people by showing favor to them and how He punishes the wicked for their evil ways. We all have a choice to make whether we choose to follow God or reject Him. He doesn’t force His salvation on anyone; He gives us the freedom to choose Him. It’s not His will that any should perish, but He gives us a free will. Have you chosen to follow God? This is the most important choice you will make in your life. The choice you make will determine where you spend eternity.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 50:16-23

16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.
21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

Things to think about:

As you read this Scripture, where are you in the decision-making process?
Are you described as one of the wicked ones or as one who praises and glorifies God?
How can we help others to see the light?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 50. We see that You will judge both the wicked and believers. Help us to honor You with our lives. Forgive us of our sins and help us to praise and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Our God Shall Come” (Psalm 50:1-15)

Our God Shall Come

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 50:1-15. Psalm 50 is a Psalm of Asaph, who was one of the worship leaders in the temple. God is calling everyone on the earth to gather together before Him so He can judge His people. Are you ready for that call?

He is coming back and when He does, He will judge both the living and the dead. He will gather those together who have made a covenant with Him. The heavens will declare His righteousness. God is a righteous judge. He knows everything about us. He knows the thoughts and intentions of our hearts.

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

God says He will not take any of our sacrifices, such as the animals that were sacrificed in the Old Testament. God reminds us that all the animals of the earth belong to Him anyway. God knows the animals like He knows us. God says even if He was hungry He wouldn’t tell us. Everything in this world belongs to God, He created it.

God reminds us to offer thanksgiving to Him. What God wants from us is praise and thanksgiving. God wants us to pay our vows to Him. God wants us to call on Him in the time of trouble. He will deliver us and we will glorify Him.

Do you call on God when you’re in trouble? Some people fast (go without food) and pray for God to deliver them. Have you ever wanted God’s favor in a situation bad enough to fast and pray for it?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 50:1-15

1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]] The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.
5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.
7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
9 I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:
15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Things to think about:

Are you ready for the call of God?
Is there anything in your life for which you need to ask God to forgive you? If so, what?
How much time do you devote to giving God praise and thanksgiving?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 50. We thank You that You are a righteous judge. Help us to honor You, praise You, and give thanksgiving to You for who You are. Thank You for loving us and caring about us. Help us to know we can call on You in the day of trouble and You will deliver us. Help us to glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
