Daily Bible Reading “Honor Your Parents” (Proverbs 20:20-30)

Honor Your Parents

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 20:20-30. This Scripture warns us that those who curse their parents are in danger of having their light put out into total darkness.

The Bible goes as far as to say we should honor our mother and father in Exodus 20:12, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” In fact this is one of the Ten Commandments that has a reward of a long life for those who honor their parents.

The Scripture tells us that an inheritance which is obtained too early in the end will not be blessed.

We are reminded not to say, “I will get even for wrong doing.” But instead of taking things into our own hands we are to wait for the LORD to handle the situation.

We are also told that double standards are detestable to the LORD; and a dishonest weight is not pleasing to the LORD.

Since the LORD directs our steps; why do we try to figure out our own way? Is it that we want to do our own thing? Or, is it that we think we know what is best for us?

It is a snare to the man who devours that which is holy and later vows to consider it.

A wise king scatters the wicked like wheat in the field, and then runs over them with a wheel.

The spirit of man is pierced by the light of the LORD. He searches our inner parts to determine our motives.

Mercy and truth save the king: and his throne is secured by mercy.

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray hair they’ve received from years of life and experience.

Physical punishment cleanses away evil doing and purifies the heart of evil devices.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 20:20-30

20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
24 Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

  • What does the Scripture say about those who curse their parents?
  • What is the spirit of man compared to in this Scripture?
  • How does this Scripture compare young men and old men?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for this Scripture from the book of Proverbs. Help us to hide the truths of Your Word in our hearts so we can learn from them. Give us strength and wisdom to make the right decisions in our life. Help us to stay away from evil. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Even a Child is Known by Their Deeds” (Proverbs 20:11-19)

Even a Child is Known by Their Deeds

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 20:11-19. As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs, we are reminded that even a child is known by their deeds, whether their work is pure, and whether it is right. If the Bible says that a child is known by their actions, how much more are we, as adults, known by our actions? We all will have to eventually give an account for our actions.

The LORD made both the hearing ear, and the eye that sees. Thank you, God, for creating our ears so that we could hear and our eyes which can see the beautiful creation that you made.

Those who love sleep come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. This is a warning for those who are lazy and only want to sleep. A certain amount of sleep is necessary for the body, but lying in the bed all day doing nothing will lead to poverty.

The buyer declares, “It is bad,” when they are trying to get a deal, but when they have gone their way, then they boast of the great deal they attained.

The Scripture compares lips full of knowledge to a precious jewel. This shows the value of knowledge and being able to share that knowledge with others.

Take the clothing of a stranger as collateral if that’s all they have to offer: and take a security of him for a peculiar woman.

Funds obtained by deception are sweet to a person; but later they act as if their mouth is filled with gravel.

Every purpose is established by counsel: and before making war be sure to get good advice.

Those who are tattle tales will make your secrets public: therefore don’t gossip with those who like to sweet-talk with their lips.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 20:11-19

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

  • What does this Scripture say we are known by?
  •  Why should we seek counsel?
  •  What does this Scripture say about a talebearer?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that even a child is known by their deeds. Help us to be aware of this and keep watch over ourselves and the things that we do. Help us to follow Your ways and not the ways of the world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Keep the Commandments” (Proverbs 19:16-22)

Keep the Commandments

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 19:16-22. In this Scripture, we are reminded that those who keep the commandments keep their own soul; but those who despise their ways will die.

Those who have pity on the poor lend to the LORD; and that which they have given He will repay them.

Chasten your child while there is hope, and don’t let your soul spare for their crying. It is important that we discipline our children while they are young. We can’t wait until they are grown to try to teach them right from wrong.

A person of great wrath will suffer punishment: if you deliver them, you must do it again.

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days. Counsel and instruction are important to our overall development.

There are many devices in a person’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD will stand.

The desire of a person is their kindness: and it is better to be a poor person than a liar.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 19:16-22

16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that those who keep the commandments keep their own soul. Help us to study Your Word and learn Your ways so that we may live according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Get Wisdom” (Proverbs 19:8-15)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 19:8-15. In this Scripture, we are reminded that those who get wisdom love their own soul: those who cherish understanding will prosper.

A false witness will not go without punishment, and those who tell lies will perish. The truth will eventually come to light.

Gladness is not fitting for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

It is by choice that a person defers their anger; and it is their glory to overlook an indiscretion.

The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion; but his favor is like dew drops spread on the grass.

A foolish child is the misfortune of their father: and the conflicts of a wife are constantly plummeting.

Houses and riches are the heritage of fathers: and a wise wife is from the LORD.

Laziness will cast you into a deep slumber; and an idle soul will go hungry.

Wisdom and understanding are not something that everybody has. It is something we have to seek after. One of the ways we can gain insight and wisdom is through studying God’s Word.

We should always be in a state of learning as we seek to gain wisdom and knowledge. Life is a constant process of learning, both from our own experiences and from persistently reading and studying.

We can’t expect wisdom to come knocking on our door. We have to pursue wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 19:8-15

8 He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.
10 Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
12 The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

  •  What does this Scripture say about those who get wisdom?
  • What do we learn about a false witness in this Scripture?
  • In what ways do you pursue wisdom?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Daily Bible Reading “Walk in Integrity” (Proverbs 19:1-7)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 19:1-7. In this Scripture, we are reminded that better is the poor who walk in integrity, than one who is perverse in their lips, and is a fool.

Also, that the soul without knowledge is not good; and those who are hasty with their feet sin.

The foolishness of a person corrupts their way: and their heart frets against the LORD.

Wealth makes many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor. Have you ever noticed how wealthy people seem to have many friends, but poor people have very few friends?

A false witness will not go unpunished, and those who speak lies will not escape. Lying will catch up with you. Even if you don’t get caught immediately, the truth will eventually come out and you will be caught in a lie.

Many will plead for the favor of a prince: and every person is a friend to those who give gifts.

All the brethren of the poor hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? He pursues them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 19:1-7

1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

As we read this Scripture we are reminded that it is better to be poor and walk in integrity. Help us to walk in integrity in our lives and our businesses. Help us to be fair and honest to all people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
