Daily Bible Reading “Trust in the LORD” (Proverbs 3:1-6)

Trust in the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:1-6. In this Scripture, Solomon says, “My son, don’t forget my law (instructions); but let your heart keep my commandments (code of wisdom).” They will add long life and peace to you.

Solomon tells his son not to forsake mercy (goodness, faithfulness or kindness) and truth. He instructs him to tie them around his neck and inscribe them on his heart.

He tells him by doing this he will find favor (grace or acceptance) and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

He reminds his son to trust (confide or have confidence) in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding (discernment). In all your ways acknowledge (know or consider) him, and he will direct your paths.

When we trust in our own understanding instead of trusting God to lead us on the road of life, we may end up on a dead end street. When we trust God and add His wisdom and knowledge to our lives He guides us to the path of eternal life.

When we trust in our own wisdom, we may have limited knowledge about certain things or circumstances. If we trust in the wisdom of other people, their wisdom is limited as well. They may lead us down the wrong path.

We are much better off to trust God and His leadership, guidance and direction in our lives. His knowledge is greater than all of our knowledge put together. He knows the past, present, and future. He knows all the details. His knowledge is not limited like ours is.

Trusting God is not a onetime thing, it is a continual process of trusting Him more and more with our lives and the decisions in our lives. We learn to depend on Him. We learn to pray to Him and ask for His guidance in our circumstances. As we develop an ongoing relationship with God we learn to trust Him more and more each day.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:1-6

1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Things to think about:

What does Solomon encourage his son to do?
What benefits does Solomon say he will receive if he follow these instructions?
What does Solomon tell his son to do concerning the LORD? Why?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that Solomon instructed his son in Your ways. He encouraged him to trust You and not to lean on his own understanding. Help us to do the same, to trust You and not depend on our own wisdom or the wisdom of other people to guide our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

**Please say a prayer for me this week. I will be having surgery on my right hand to remove a ganglian cyst on Tuesday. I am right-handed so I am hoping and praying everything goes well and I don’t have any problems. Please also remember the doctor that God will lead, guide and direct his hand as he works on my hand. If all goes well I should be able to continue doing the work I do. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I love you with the love of the Lord. Blessings, Deborah

Daily Bible Reading “Choose Wisdom” (Proverbs 2:10-22)

Choose Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 2:10-22. In this Scripture, Solomon talks to his son about both Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly. He tells him the benefits of wisdom, saying, “Wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul. Discretion will preserve you, understanding will keep you.”

Wisdom, knowledge, understanding and discretion will deliver you from the way of evil men who speak perverse things. They leave the paths of righteousness and walk in the ways of darkness.

They rejoice to do evil, and delight in the foolishness of the wicked. Their ways are devious and their paths are crooked. Not only does Solomon warn his son about evil men, but he also warns him about hanging around with strange women.

He tells him that wisdom will save him from Lady Folly, who is the strange woman that flatters with her words. He warns him about the adulteress woman who has forsaken her husband and forgotten her covenant with God.

Entering into her house causes death to marriages and following her paths leads to destruction. Because of her alluring ways, no one who goes into her returns again. They become entrapped in the situation and cause damage to the path of their life.

Solomon encourages his son to walk in the way of good men and stay on the paths of the righteous.

He tells him that the upright will dwell in the land, and the perfect will inhabit it. He warns him that those who choose the path of the wicked will be cut off from the earth and the transgressors will be rooted out of it.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

We can choose wisdom and the way to eternal life or we can choose wickedness and the way to eternal death and destruction. Choose wisdom – choose life!

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 2:10-22

10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

Things to think about:

What does the path of wisdom lead to?
What does the path of the wicked lead to?
What does Solomon warn his son about Lady Folly?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see two different paths of life that we can choose, the path of righteousness or the path of destruction. Help us to choose wisdom in every situation of our lives. Help us to use discretion about the people we hang around. Help us to stay on the path of righteousness. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Gives Wisdom” (Proverbs 2:1-9)

The LORD Gives Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 2:1-9. Solomon says to his son, “My son, accept my words, and hide my commandments in your heart. Listen to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding.”

Seek wisdom like you seek after money, and search for it like hidden treasures. Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

The LORD gives wisdom. From His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He sets up sound wisdom for the upright. He protects those who live with integrity. He keeps the paths of judgment, and guards the path of his faithful children.

If you seek wisdom from the LORD, you will learn to be honest, have good judgment, be impartial, and walk in every good way.

There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. We can have a lot of knowledge about a certain topic, but to say we have wisdom in that area we have to learn to understand and apply the knowledge that we have attained.

Wisdom and knowledge are something we have to seek after. It is not going to come knocking on our door.

Having a relationship with the LORD and spending time with Him, listening for His still small voice will help us to obtain wisdom.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 2:1-9

1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Things to think about:

What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge?
Where do we get wisdom, knowledge, and understanding?
What do we need to do to obtain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we see that we have to seek after wisdom and knowledge. Help us to seek Your face for the wisdom, knowledge and understanding that we need in this life. Help us to live with integrity and seek to do right in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Wisdom Cries Out” (Proverbs 1:20-33)

Wisdom Cries Out

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 1:20-33. In this Scripture, wisdom is portrayed as a woman. She calls out in the streets and at the city gate.

There are three types of people she cries out to:

The Simple – a silly person, one who is easily persuaded
The Scorners – mockers – one who mocks at God’s wisdom.
The Fool – one who is stupid and arrogant.

She asks, “How long will the simple love simplicity? How long will the scorners delight in scorning? How long will fools hate knowledge?”

Wisdom is trying to save them from their own ways. She tells them to turn from their old ways and she will give them understanding and wisdom.

But they wouldn’t listen. They were set in their ways. Because of their stubbornness she says there would come a time when they call out to her, but she won’t answer them. She will laugh at their calamity and mock them when they are afraid.

They were unwilling to accept knowledge and understanding and did not choose the fear of the LORD. They wouldn’t accept counsel and despised correction.

They will suffer the consequences of their own ways. But whoever will listen to me will be safe and won’t be afraid of evil.

Do you know anyone who would fit in any of these three categories?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 1:20-33

20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

How is wisdom portrayed in this Scripture?
What are the categories of people mentioned in this Scripture?
What does wisdom say will happen to those who won’t listen?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we see that there are warnings for three types of people. Help us to examine our own lives and see if there is anywhere that we fit into any of these categories. Help us to see wisdom and knowledge. Help us to fear the LORD and refrain from evil. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
