Daily Bible Reading “Be of Good Courage” (Psalm 31:1-24)

Be of Good Courage

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 31:1-24. Psalm 31 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David proclaims that he trusts in the LORD. Who or in what do you put your trust? David asks God to deliver him and not let him be ashamed. What makes you feel ashamed? How does shame change the way you act?

David asks God to hear his prayer and deliver him from the enemy. David says God is his rock, his fortress, and his strength. He asks the LORD to lead and guide him.

David cries out to the LORD for mercy. David was in trouble. He was grieved over his situation. David says he was a disgrace to his enemies, and especially his neighbors. David’s enemies were looking for ways to destroy him. He declares that he was like a broken vessel. Have you ever felt broken?

David praises the LORD for having mercy on him. He is grateful to God for protecting him from the enemy. David had many enemies. Many times he was running and hiding out in caves to keep from being killed. David’s enemies were physical. We can also be pursued by the enemy himself, the devil, who goes about seeking to destroy us. He may come against you physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. He may attack your family, your finances, or anything else he can and try to destroy your testimony. David calls on the LORD to protect him from his enemies, and we can also call on the LORD to defend us against the enemy.

David reminds us that we can trust in the LORD to take care of those of us who are faithful. My favorite verse in this Scripture is Psalm 31:24 which says, “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.” Do you have hope in the LORD?

Many of David’s Psalms begin with the troubles that he is facing, but by the end of the Psalm he acknowledges God. David begins this Psalm by begging God to deliver him from his enemies, but by the end of the Psalm he is reminding us of God’s goodness toward His children.

How many times do we, like David, begin our prayers with our troubles, only to be reminded by the Spirit of God and His wonderful power to save us?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 31:1-24

1 [[To the Chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.
3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.
4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.
5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;
8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.
12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
14 But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.
15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake.
17 Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.
19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.
23 O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you express your trust in God?
In what ways do you consider God to be your rock and fortress?
In what ways has God protected you and given you strength against the enemy?
David seems desperate at the beginning of this Scripture, but what is his attitude by the end?
David trusted God to deliver him from his enemies. What are you trusting God for today?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. You are our rock and our fortress. You give us strength and protect us from the enemy. You are merciful and forgiving. Even though we fail You, You love and care for us. Help us to have courage Help us to always be grateful and praise You for Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is My Light” (Psalm 27:1-14)

The LORD is My Light

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 27:1-14. Psalm 27 is a Psalm of David. In the first half of the chapter David talks about his faith and trust in God. The second half is David’s prayer to God for deliverance.

David declares that the LORD is his light and salvation. He finds his strength in God. David asks who he should fear or of whom should he be afraid.

Even when David’s enemy sought to destroy him the LORD protected him. David trusted God to put a shield of protection around him. David’s desire was to dwell in the house of the LORD and sing praises to His holy name.

David cried out to God to have mercy on him and not deliver him into the hands of his enemies. David encourages us to wait on the LORD and be courageous, and depend on God to strengthen our hearts and keep us from evil.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 27:1-14

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

What was David’s plea to God?
With what encouraging words does David end this chapter?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We thank You that You are our light and our salvation. Thank You for watching over us and protecting us from the enemy. We thank You that You hear our prayers when we cry out to You. Teach us Your ways and lead us in the path of righteousness for Your sake. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Judge Me, Oh LORD” (Psalm 26:1-12)

Judge Me, Oh LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 26:1-12. Psalm 26 is a Psalm of David. David asks God to judge him. He said he walked in integrity and trusted in the LORD. He tells God to examine him and test him. David keeps God’s loving kindness before his eyes and he walks in the truth of the LORD.

There were times in David’s life when he sinned against God, most notably with Bathsheba and Uriah (see 2 Samuel 11). But he repented and put his complete faith and trust in God. David separates himself from evildoers. He set himself aside for his relationship with God. In this Scripture, David shows us in this Scripture the importance of having positive friends and role models.

David chooses to follow God with his whole heart. David loves the house of God. He speaks of God’s wondrous works and is thankful to God for all His blessings.

David begs God to protect him from his enemies. They were evil men, who performed wicked acts with their hands. They took bribes to do evil. David doesn’t want to be associated with them. He wants God to keep him away from these evil doers.

David cries out to God to redeem him and have mercy on him. Once David stumbled and fell into sin, but now he was walking in integrity. His feet are on solid ground. His intent is to praise the LORD forever.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 26:1-12

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.
2 Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.
3 For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth.
4 I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers.
5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.
6 I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD:
7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.
8 LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.
9 Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men:
10 In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.
11 But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.
12 My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD.

How can we walk in integrity like David did?
Would you be courageous enough to ask God to examine your life and judge you?
What were some of the ways David separated himself from those who came between him and his faith in God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for David’s testimony that he walked in integrity. David reminds us of the importance of separating ourselves from evil. Help us to walk in Your ways and keep us from every evil work. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Have Mercy on Me” (Psalm 25:1-22)

Have Mercy on Me

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 25:1-22. Psalm 25 is a Psalm of David. David cries out to God to lift him up and not let his enemies triumph over him.

David asks God to teach him the ways of God. David asks God to remember His mercies and loving-kindness.

David is in a state of despair. He has many enemies that are after him. David asks God to forgive him of the sins of his youth. David asks God to show him mercy and goodness. He cries out to God to protect and help him in his time of need. David has put his trust and faith in God and he is counting on God to see him through his time of trouble. David also asks God to deliver Israel out of all its troubles.

We too can put our faith and trust in God and depend on Him to help us as we walk through this life. There may be times in our lives when we sin and turn away from God.

God is always there waiting on us to restore our fellowship with Him. All we have to do is confess our sins and ask Him to forgive us and help us not to sin in that way anymore. He will forgive us and give us the strength we need to continue in this life. We may go through some difficult times, but with God on our side we can make it through. Have you put your faith and trust in God?

Psalm 25:1-22

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.
3 Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.
4 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
6 Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.

17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.

19 Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.
20 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.
21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.
22 Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

Daily Bible Reading “Who is This King of Glory?” (Psalm 24:1-10)

Who is This King of Glory?

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 24:1-10. Psalm 24 is a Psalm of David. David declares the earth and those who dwell in it is the LORD’S. God created the earth and every living creature that dwells on the earth.

David asks, “Who will ascend to the hill of the LORD and stand in His holy place?” David says it will be He who has clean hands and a pure heart and doesn’t speak vainly or lie. He will receive the blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of His salvation. Could David be talking about Jesus? He ascended to heaven and He will return one day and stand on the holy hill of the LORD.

David cries out, “Lift up your heads and the King of glory will come in!” David asks several times who this King of glory is. Notice the replies. The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle, the LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory! Do you know this LORD?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 24:1-10

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.
7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

Who does David say will stand on the holy hill of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We thank You and praise You for Your creation of the earth and everything in the earth. We thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who came and lived on this earth, then died for our sins. Help us to put our complete faith and trust in His finished work of salvation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
