Daily Bible Reading “Apple of the Eye” (Proverbs 7:1-5)

Apple of the Eye

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 7:1-5. Solomon tells his son, “My son, keep my words, and treasure my commandments. Keep my commandments, and live; and my instruction as the apple of your eye.”

Tie them around your fingers; write them on the table of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister;” and call understanding your relative. They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the stranger who flatters with her words.

The pupil is considered to be the apple of the eye. Solomon is reminding us if we keep our focus on the right things, the good things that we have been taught by our parents and in the Word of God; we are less likely to veer off the good path of life to the path of sin and destruction.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 7:1-5

1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

Things to think about:

What does Solomon tell his son to do with the things he has taught him?
What does Solomon tell his son to call wisdom?
What does Solomon tell his son to call understanding?
Why does Solomon say to keep wisdom and understanding close to you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture from Proverbs we are reminded to keep wisdom and understanding close to us. Help us to keep the good things that we have been taught by our parents and from the Bible as the focus of our eyes and heart so that we might live the way You would have us to. Help us not to get distracted by the ways of this world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Beware of Wicked People” (Proverbs 6:12-15)

Beware of Wicked People

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 6:12-15. In this Scripture, Solomon warns his son about people who are wicked. He wants them to be aware that there are these kinds of people in the world. He wants them to be on guard against the evil and wicked plans that they devise.

The first thing he warns them about is that naughty, wicked men, walk around with a deceitful mouth. They tell lies at every turn.

Sometimes people who were raised in Christian homes and have never experienced the wicked people of this world think that they can trust everybody. We need to teach our children that not everybody was raised like them and not everybody was taught right from wrong.

Wicked people maliciously wink their eyes, make motions with their feet, and make gestures with their fingers.

In Proverbs 35:19 David says, “Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.”

Wicked people are perverse in their hearts. They constantly devise mischief and cause trouble.

Micah 2:1 tells us, “Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.”

The wicked will eventually get their just rewards. The outcome for these kind of people is misfortune which comes upon them quickly. They will be suddenly destroyed because of their evil ways.

Do you know anyone who would rather lie than tell the truth any day? Have you ever known someone who sits around thinking about what evil thing they can do next? Solomon warns us about these kind of people.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 6:12-15

12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

Things to think about:

What are some of the characteristics of the wicked that Solomon mentions in this Scripture?
Why should we be aware of these things?
How can we guard against the wickedness of evil people?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see where Solomon warns his sons about wicked people. He tells us ways to identify these kinds of people. Help us to be aware and be on guard against those who would devise evil against us. Protect us from every evil work and help us to be what you would have us be. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Rejoice with the Wife of Your Youth” (Proverbs 5:15-23)

Rejoice with the Wife of Your Youth

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 5:15-23. Water is considered to be a precious commodity in many nations of the world, including Israel. In this Scripture, Solomon compares the marriage relationship to drinking from a well.

He encourages his sons to drink water only from their own well. He tells them to let their fountains be scattered abroad. He says to let their fountains be pure and not be combined with those of strangers.

He tells them to let their fountain be blessed and rejoice with the wife of their youth. He encourages them to have loving relationships with their wives and to never embrace strange women.

He warns them that the LORD’S eyes are watching and He knows everything we do. Our sins and wickedness will take hold of us. Without instruction we will die in our sins because we have been led astray.

Solomon wants his sons to stay on the right path. Not only can having relationships that are not pure destroy our marriages, but it can also cause us to stray from God. When we have sin in our lives it puts distance between us and God as well as us and our mate.

The marriage relationship is similar to the relationship that we have with the LORD. As we are only to have one wife or husband, we are to serve only one God.

Even Jesus had to tell Satan to leave him alone in Matthew 4:10, “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

We need to be proactive when the devil tempts us and tell Him to go away and leave us alone. We know that it is his job to kill, steal, and destroy. So, it is important that we resist him and the temptation that he has to offer.

If we nurture our marriage relationship we will be less likely to give into the temptations that come our way. We can grow old together and still be in love with one another after many years of marriage.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 5:15-23

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.
22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Things to think about:

How does Solomon compare the marriage relationship to a fountain of water?
In what way is the marriage relationship similar to the relationship we are to have with Christ?
What does Solomon say our folly (foolishness) can cause?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see the importance of having a monogamous relationship with our husband or wife. Help us to resist the temptations of the enemy and to have a loving relationship with our spouse. Forgive us of the times we have failed you in this area and help us to be strong in the LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
