Words of Wisdom from a Mother to Her Son
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 31:1-9. Proverbs 31 is a chapter about a mother giving godly advice to her son. It is thought by biblical scholars that when the Scripture is speaking of King Lemuel and his mother, it is speaking of King Solomon and his mother, who was Bathsheba. She tells him not to give his strength to women, and not to act in ways that will destroy kings.
She advises him not to drink wine, because it will cloud his judgment. She also advises him to plead the cause of the needy. Do you remember any advice your mother gave you? Did you heed her advice? In the rest of this chapter there are very specific instructions from his mother about how to find a virtuous wife and what a virtuous woman acts like.
If you are a woman, would you consider yourself to be a virtuous woman? Some of the words that describe what it means to be a virtuous woman are: good, righteous, worthy, honorable, moral, upright, honest, strong, efficient, prosperous, courageous, and chaste. She is a person of high moral standards who serves her family, her community, and God well.
Daily Bible Reading:
Proverbs 31:1-9
1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
Things to think about:
- What advice did your mother give you that you still practice today?
- What is the one thing your mother taught you that you are most proud to follow today?
- What kind of advice do you give your children?
Prayer of the Day:
