The LORD Will Hear the Prayer of the Destitute

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 102:15-28. Have you ever felt desperate for God to hear and answer your prayer? The Psalmist earlier in the chapter cried out for God to hear his prayer. In this portion of the chapter he declares the greatness of the LORD.

He says the heathen will fear the name of the LORD and all the kings of the earth will fear His glory. When the LORD comes back in all His glory, He will build up Zion. He will remember the prayer of the destitute.

The Psalmist reminds us, this is written for the generation to come. It is a prophetic statement to let us know that the LORD hears and answers our prayers and He will return one day to take His children home.

The LORD looks down from His sanctuary in heaven and hears the cries of the prisoner. He will come back to proclaim the name of the LORD in Zion. His people will gather in Jerusalem to praise and worship the LORD.

This man is weak in his body and believes he is close to the end of his days. He is begging the LORD to spare his life.

The Psalmist professes the LORD as the creator of the world and that His name will last forever. The name of the LORD will be passed down from generation to generation. It is our duty as believers to make sure that the Word of the LORD is passed down to the next generation.

We need to teach our children and grandchildren about the LORD. Are you doing your part to spread the good news of the Gospel to the next generation? Thank God for those who came before us and sacrificed to make sure we knew about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our lifetime.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 102:15-28

15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.
16 When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.
18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth;
20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;
21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;
22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.
24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you show reverence for the name of the LORD?
In what ways can we prepare for the return of the LORD?
How do you acknowledge God as being the creator of the world?
What are some things we can do to make sure future generations have a chance to hear the Gospel?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 102 in which the Psalmist reminds us of Your greatness and holiness. Help us to acknowledge You as LORD of this earth and as LORD of our lives. Help us to share the Gospel with the next generation. Help us to look forward to Your return. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “Blessings of Giving Thanks” (Psalm 100:1-5)

Blessings of Giving Thanks

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 100. This post was written by my friend, Janet Harllee.

I can already smell Mamma’s Russian tea, and taste her pumpkin pie and persimmon pudding. You cannot have Thanksgiving without them.

Thanksgiving always brings a flood of great memories to me. My parents would rent tables and set them up in our basement. Then neighbors, family, and friends were invited to bring a dish of their favorite food and join us for a Thanksgiving meal. There were friends and family we had not seen since the last Thanksgiving Day. It was a time to catch up on each other, to share hugs, laughter, and music. Psalm 100 is one of my favorite Psalms!

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 100:1-5

1 Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands. (Acknowledge Him.)

2 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. (Praise Him; be joyful.)

3 Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. (Know that God is our creator. He is the good Shepherd who loves and cares for His people.)

4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him and bless His name. (We are all invited to praise the Lord. We are dependent on Him.)

5 For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations. (He is faithful to all generations.)

The Pilgrims gave thanks to God for their bountiful harvest. Giving thanks to God is pleasing to Him. In praising Him, you will experience great joy!

Things to think about:

Are you truly giving Him thanks for blessing you?
Do you acknowledge God and give Him praise?
For what are you thankful?
Do we have to wait for Thanksgiving to give thanks to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that You will open our hearts to be truly thankful for all your blessings. Thank You, most of all, for Your grace. Teach us Lord to be more like You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Verse:

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him and bless His name. – Psalm 100:4

Daily Bible Reading “Hope in God” (Psalm 43:1-5)

Hope in God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 43:1-5. The Psalmist begs God to judge him, to plead his case against the enemy and deliver him. He says, God is his strength or refuge and asks why God has rejected him. Have you ever felt like God has deserted you? Have you ever wondered if He heard your prayers?

The Psalmist asks God to shine His light and truth on him and to lead him to God’s dwelling place. He says God is his joy. He declares he will praise God with his harp. Have you ever felt discouraged or depressed due to your circumstances? The Psalmist reminds himself and us to have hope in God and praise Him. He proclaims that God is his helper.

I can tell you from personal experience that if somehow you can stop focusing on your situations and put your focus on God and praise Him, He will encourage you and help you get through your situation. As long as you focus on your circumstances you will be defeated, but when you switch your focus to God your circumstances have to take a back seat. God is bigger than all of our circumstances.

In the book of Esther, the circumstances of the Jewish people were devastating. They were in sackcloth and ashes worrying about their future. Esther asked them to spend three days with her fasting and praying and God turned their situation around. They took their focus off of their circumstances and put their focus, trust, and faith in God and He saw them through their situation. Have you put your hope in God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 43:1-5

1 Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.
2 For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
4Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Things to think about:

Have you ever been distressed because of your circumstances?
Did you refocus and put your eyes on God?
Has God helped you to get through a difficult situation?
If you are going through a difficult time now put your focus on God and He will help you get through it.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We thank You that no matter what we are going through with Your help we can make it. Help us to put our faith, trust, and hope in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let Every Thing That Has Breath Praise the LORD” (Psalm 150:1-6)

Let Every Thing That Has Breath Praise the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 150:1-6. Psalm 150 is a Psalm of praise to the LORD. The Psalmist calls out for us to praise the LORD in His sanctuary, and in the firmament of His power. Praise Him for His mighty acts. Praise Him for His exceptional greatness.

Praise Him with the beautiful music of the trumpet. Praise Him with the psaltery (a bag made from animal skin that held liquids, possibly a water bottle), and harp. Dance and praise him with the timbrel (tambourine. Praise Him with stringed instruments, organs, and loud cymbals (an instrument that made a tingling or clinking noise).

My favorite verse from this chapter is verse 6, which says, “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.” You may be surprised to find out how good it makes you feel to praise the LORD. God created the earth and everything in it to praise Him, including us. “Praise ye the LORD.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 150: 1-6

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

Do you play a musical instrument on which you can praise the LORD? If so, what is it?
Do you enjoy listening to praise and worship music? If so, what is your favorite praise and worship song?
What are some ways we can praise the LORD?
How do you feel when you praise the LORD?
How do you think it makes God feel when we praise Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 150 where the Psalmist encourages us to sing praises to You. Help us to use every instrument we can and our voices to sing praises and make beautiful music to praise and worship Your holy name. We love You, LORD, and we praise You for who You are and for all You have done for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Sing unto the LORD a New Song” (Psalm 149:1-9)

Sing unto the LORD a New Song

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 149:1-9. Psalm 149 is a Psalm of praise. The Psalmist exhorts us to sing to the LORD a new song.

He calls on Israel to rejoice in their Creator and be joyful in their King. He encourages them to praise God in their dance and sing praises to Him with the timbrel (tambourine) and harp. The LORD takes pleasure in His people and enjoys their praise.

The Psalmist says for the children of God to sing praises to God on their beds. This makes me think that we should sing praises to God when we wake up in the morning and before we go to sleep at night.

He calls out for the praises of God to be in their mouths and a two-edged sword in their hand. These people no doubt were in battle. They had to defend their faith, their lives, and their land. They had to declare judgment on their enemies. Yet, they were to praise the LORD.

Even so, we should be praising the LORD in spite of our circumstances. Circumstances come and go, but the love of the LORD will last forever. Sing praises to His holy name.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 149:1-9

1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

What do you think the new song was that they were supposed to sing to the LORD?
How does it make you feel to read “The LORD takes pleasure in his people?”
Do you make a habit of being joyful and singing praises to the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 149 where the Psalmist exhorts us to sing praises to the LORD. Help us to praise You day and night. Help us to praise You in spite of our circumstances. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
