Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD” (Psalm 68:8-19)

Blessed Be the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:8-19. In this Scripture David is remembering the things the LORD has done for him in the past. Do you ever look back and think about the things God has done for you? When you are feeling discouraged, this is a good thing to do to remind yourself how much God loves you.

David remembers God displaying His presence. He speaks of God sending the rain to confirm their inheritance when they were weary. Do you thank God for the rain? If there was no rain, we would have a famine. The rain helps the trees, flowers, grass, and crops to grow.

God’s Word is used to share the Gospel with others. His Word can heal those who have a broken heart. It can take those who are the least among the least and transform their lives.

There are other mountains taller than Mount Sinai, but God chose it as His mount. In the same way, God chooses people who may not be well-known to share the Gospel with others, and exalts them above those who are famous.

Exodus 19:18 tells us that the LORD descended upon Mount Sinai in fire: and it smoke as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked.

David refers to Jesus when He talks about the ascension. This is also referred to in Ephesians 4:8-10 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)”

David acknowledges God as the God of our salvation. It is God who blesses us with blessings, both eternally and every day.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:8-19

8 The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain, whereby thou didst confirm thine inheritance, when it was weary.
10 Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.
11 The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.
12 Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.
13 Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
14 When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon.
15 The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan; an high hill as the hill of Bashan.
16 Why leap ye, ye high hills? this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.
17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

What are some times in your life when you remember God’s blessings?
What are some things you are thankful to God for on a daily basis?
What are some things we can do to show our gratitude to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. David reminds us of times when You made Your presence known. He also reminds us of the many blessings You have given us. Help us to always remember and be grateful for all your blessings. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “Let God Arise” (Psalm 68:1-7)

Let God Arise

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:1-7. Psalm 68 is a Psalm of David to the chief Musician. This is thought to be a dedication to Jerusalem. David starts by saying, “Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered.” Have you let God arise in your life?

David declares let those who hate God flee, as the smoke is driven away let them go away, even as wax melts by fire, so will the wicked perish at the presence of God. The righteous will be glad and rejoice before God. They will sing praises to God and rejoice exceedingly.

David reminds us that God is a father to the fatherless. If you are fatherless, remember, God loves you and He is there for you. When I lost my father, I was devastated for a long time. God comforted me. I knew that I could go to Him anytime, day or night, with my concerns. He has always been there for me.

God is a judge to widows; God loves you and is near to you; when you are lonely, call on Him. God puts those who are alone in families. He brings out those who are in chains, but the rebellious live in a dry land. Rebelling against God can leave you in a dry land, far from God, where nothing is blessed.

When the Israelis were in the wilderness, God went before them and led them through the wilderness. Have you noticed God leading you throughout your life?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:1-7

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm [or] Song of David.]] Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.
2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.
6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
7 O God, when thou wentest forth before thy people, when thou didst march through the wilderness; Selah:

Things to think about:

In what ways have you allowed God to arise in your life?
How can God be a father to the fatherless?
Have you accepted God as your Heavenly Father?
What is your favorite song to sing when you are singing praises to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. David declares, “Let God arise.” Help us to let You arise in our lives. He talks about how the enemy is driven away from You and melts like wax. Please drive the enemy away from us and protect us from his snares. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “My God, My God” (Psalm 22:1-31)

My God, My God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 22:1-31. Psalm 22 is a Psalm of David, to the Chief Musician, upon Aijeleth Shahar. Aijeleth Shahar describes the melody to which the psalm was to be played.

This Psalm starts by saying, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus actually cried these words from the cross (see Matthew 27:46). He was forsaken by the Father for a purpose. Have you ever felt like God had forsaken you?

Psalm 22 has been referred to as, “the Psalm of the cross,” even though it was written by David about a thousand years before the death of Jesus on the cross. This Psalm describes what took place on the cross while Jesus was hanging on it. David even describes what Jesus was thinking and feeling. He also describes how the people acted around Jesus. Jesus suffered an extreme amount of pain as He took on our sins on the cross.

Deuteronomy 21:22-23 says, “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.”

God sent Jesus to be born on the earth for this purpose. He was miraculously placed in His mother’s womb so He could come to this world to die for the sins of the whole world. He was despised and rejected by the people around Him even though He came here to serve them.
Jesus took our sin upon Himself on the cross.

First Peter 2:24 tells us, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (see Romans 3:23). But Jesus died so we can have eternal life. Have you accepted His sacrifice for your sins?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 22:1-31

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.]] My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28 For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.
29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

Things to think about:

Why was Jesus forsaken by the Father while on the cross?
Why did Jesus go to the cross?
How much did Jesus have to trust the Father in order to put His life in His hands?
Have you put your life in God’s hands?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Even though this Psalm is hard to read about the suffering Jesus went through we thank You for the sacrifice that was made for our sins. Help us to realize the agony He felt and cause us to appreciate the gift we have been given. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is Righteous” (Psalm 129:1-8)

The LORD is Righteous

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 129:1-8. Psalm 129 is another of the song of degrees, which was sung or chanted while on the way to Jerusalem. The people of Israel went to Jerusalem three times a year for Passover, Pentecost, and tabernacles. They would go as families. The Psalmist starts this Psalm saying that many times Israel has been afflicted, but the enemy wasn’t able to prevail against Israel.

Israel had other countries come against them, but God is faithful, He protected them against their enemies. The Psalmist acknowledges that the enemy plowed through Zion, but says those who hate Zion have been put to shame.

He declares that the enemies withered like the grass on the rooftop that withers before it grows up. Can you picture that in your mind? The enemies who come against Zion are struck down before they get started good. The children of Israel knew they had enemies, but they trusted God to watch over them and protect them from their enemies.

The Psalmist says neither do they say “The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.” There are those who may rise up against Israel and against Christians, but the LORD will prevail in the end. Israel is His promised land and He will guard it like a shepherd guards His sheep.

These songs of ascents are great motivation and encouragement songs. They were almost like the chants in the army to keep the soldiers marching in stride. They helped keep the people moving forward toward their destination.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 129:1-8

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.
4 The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.
6 Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
7 Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.
8 Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.

Things to think about:

Why are some people enemies with Israel?
In what ways do you count the LORD as righteous and faithful to His children?
In what ways do you bless others in the name of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 129 where the Psalmist reminds us of Your loyalty to Israel and to Your children. LORD, we pray for the peace of Israel. We pray for Your protective hand over them. Help us to treasure Your righteousness toward Your children. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed are Those Who Fear the LORD” (Psalm 128:1-6)

Blessed are Those Who Fear the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 128:1-6. Psalm 128 is another one of the Songs of degrees that the children of Israel sang on their journey to Jerusalem. The Psalmist starts by saying, “Blessed are those who fear the LORD, and walk in His ways.” They will eat the labor of their hands. They will be happy and it will be well with them.

Their wives will be like a fruitful vine on the side of their house. The LORD will bless the man and his wife who fear Him to be fruitful and multiply, having children to teach to love and fear the LORD. Their children will be like olive plants around their table.

One of the most rewarding places for family fellowship is around the table. I love when I cook a nice meal and have my family gathered around the table for dinner and fellowship with one another. Sometimes we may sit there for an hour or so after dinner and talk with each other. I really enjoy that special time together.

In this Psalm it talks about those who fear the LORD. This is not speaking of being afraid of God, but respecting and honoring Him as we would our earthly father. Those who respect the LORD will be blessed. The LORD will bless them from Zion and they will see the good of Jerusalem all their days. They will see the blessings of the LORD in their lives. They will live to see their children’s children, and peace in Jerusalem. What a great promise to be able to live to see your grandchildren and be able to see peace in Jerusalem, which sometimes looks like it may be when Jesus returns.

This Psalm is a promise that those who love, honor, and respect the LORD will be blessed. Some of their blessings include the blessing of family. The LORD will bless those who seek Him and walk in His ways.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 128:1-6

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.
5 The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you fear the LORD?
How do you walk in the ways of the LORD?
In what ways do you think of your family as a blessing from the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 128 where the Psalmist reminds us that those who fear You and walk in Your ways will be blessed. We thank You for the blessing of our families. Help us to seek Your face and walk in Your ways. Help us to respect, revere, and fear You. Help us to know You and have a personal relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
