Daily Bible Reading “Hope” (Proverbs 13:1-12)

Hope

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 13:1-12. We are reminded in this Scripture that a wise son hears his father’s instruction: but a mocker doesn’t listen to reproof. What is the real difference between a wise person and a wicked person?

By the fruit of their mouth a person will eat well: but the soul of the faithless desire violence.

Those who guard their mouth keep their life: but those who open their lips wide will be destroyed.

The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent becomes prosperous.

A righteous person hates lying: but a wicked person stinks and comes to shame.

Righteousness keeps those of integrity: but wickedness ruins the sinner.

There are those who pretend that they are rich, but have nothing: and there are those who act poor, but they are wealthy.

A wealthy person may be able to ransom his life: but the poor doesn’t hear rebuke.

The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked burns out.

Only by pride comes strife: but those who are well advised find wisdom.

Wealth gotten by vanity will be diminished: but those who gather by labor will increase.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

The last verse in this Scripture is my favorite one from this passage. Have you ever hoped for something, but never received it? This passage reminds us that hope deferred makes the heart sick. But, when we are able to get the desires of our heart it springs up with life inside of us.

We may not have much hope in this world and the things of this world, but we can find true hope through our faith in Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 13:1-12

1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
8 The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.
9 The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Daily Bible Reading “Watch Your Words” (Proverbs 12:17-28)

Watch Your Words

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 12:17-28. In this Scripture, we learn a lot about our speech. We are reminded that those who speak the truth declare righteousness: but a liar is deceptive.

There are those whose words pierce like a sword: but the speech of the wise brings healing. The truth will be established forever: but a lying tongue lasts only for a moment.

Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil: but to the counselors of peace is joy. No evil will happen to the just: but the wicked will be filled with mischief.

Those who tell lies are an abomination to the LORD: but those who are truthful are his delight. A cautious person conceals knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness.

The hand of the diligent will rule: but those who are lazy will labor. Heaviness in the heart of a person makes it sad: but a good word makes the heart happy.

The righteous is more excellent than their neighbor: but the wicked seduces them. A lazy man doesn’t cook what he catches while hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

The way of righteousness is life; and in their pathway is no death.

This Scripture reminds us the words that come out of our mouths can be good or they can be harmful. Many times our words can offend others.

Our words can be truthful or they can be lies. The words we speak come from our heart. If our heart is not right with God it will be reflected by our language.

We need to learn to think before we speak. Many times we let the words fly out of our mouths before we even take time to think about them, especially if we are angry. We need to learn to engage our mind before we open our mouth. This is an acrostic of the word THINK to help us remember to pause for a minute and think before we speak.

THINK

T = is it True?

H = is it Helpful?

I = is it Inspirational?

N = is it Necessary?

K = is it Kind?

Once our words have been spoken, it is too late to take them back. They have already spewed out of our mouth and if they are sharp and cutting, they hurt people. Sometimes hurt feelings take years or even a lifetime to heal.

This Scripture reminds me of the children’s song we used to sing in church, “Oh, be careful little mouth what you say.”

If we are to please God with our speech we need to put a guard over our mouths and speak words of encouragement, love, and inspiration to others. Lord, help us.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 12:17-28

17 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.
18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.
21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
28 In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

Things to think about:

  • How does this Scripture compare the righteous with the wicked?
  • Have you ever noticed these differences in people you know?
  • How can we learn to live like the righteous that are mentioned in this Scripture?
  • What are some ways we can guard our words?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are again reminded of the differences in the way that righteous people and wicked people handle matters. Help us to use our mouth in ways that are pleasing to You. Help us to always deal with others in a way that will bring honor to You. Forgive us of all the times we have failed You in this area of our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Wise Listen to Advice” (Proverbs 12:12-16)

The Wise Listen to Advice

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 12:12-16. In this Scripture, we are reminded that we can choose the way of the wicked and end up in trouble, entrapped by the snares of evil people, or we can choose the way of the righteous and produce good fruit.

The wicked person is caught by the transgression of his lips. They will usually end up telling on their self if they have done something wrong. But a righteous person will try to stay away from trouble.

A person will be satisfied with good by the fruit of their mouth: and the dealing of a person’s hands will be returned to them.

The way a foolish person seems right to them. They refuse to listen to advice. But the person who is wise will listen to advice and even seeks it.

A fool’s anger is always recognized. They don’t care who is around or what they say when they get angry. But a cautious person conceals their shame. They don’t spout out all of their feelings in front of everybody. They keep their disappointments to their self.

Have you ever known someone who refused to listen to any advice that you tried to give them? They want to do things their own way even though you warn them that they are going to get in trouble. After a while you have to let people learn for themselves if they refuse to take advice or listen to instruction.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 12:12-16

12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.
13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.
14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
16 A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

  •  What are some of the differences listed in this Scripture between a wise person and a foolish person?

Prayer of the Day:

Daily Bible Reading “Righteousness” (Proverbs 12:5-11)

proverbs_12_5_Righteousness

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 12:5-11. In this Scripture, we are told that the thoughts of the righteous are true: but the guidance of the wicked is deceptive.

The words of the wicked wait for blood: but the speech of the upright delivers them.

The wicked are overthrown, and perish: but the house of the righteous will stand.

You cannot trust someone who is wicked. They will lie, cheat, steal, and who knows what else.

A person will be praised according to their wisdom: but those who have a stubborn heart will be despised.

Those who are despised, and have a servant, are better than those who honor themselves, and are hungry.

A righteous person takes good care of his animals: but the wicked are cruel to both animals and other people.

Those who work their land will not go hungry. They will be satisfied with good food from their land.

Those who follow vain people lack understanding. We need to be careful who we take advice from. Not everybody has our best interest at heart. Some people are out to get what they can from you. They are selfish and uncaring. All they care about are themselves.

Our prayer should be, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 12:5-11

5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.
6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.
8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
9 He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.
10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.

Things to think about:

  • Would you rather take advice from a righteous person or a wicked person? Why?
  • What is the difference in the way a righteous person and a wicked person treat their animals or other people?
  • What is the benefit of working the land?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture and compare the life of the righteous with that of the wicked we see that the righteous have Your blessings on them. The righteous make wise decisions. The wicked are foolish. Help us to be righteous and wise. Help us to walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Knowledge” (Proverbs 12:1-4)

proverbs_12_1Knowledge

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 12:1-4. This Scripture tells us whoever loves instruction loves knowledge: but those who hate correction are foolish.

Through God’s Word we can find the knowledge and instruction we need to live a victorious life. If we ignore His principles and go about living our own way we will not find victory.

The Scripture says that those who seek to live good godly lives will find favor with the LORD, but those who scheme and choose to live wicked lives will be condemned.

We are reminded that no one can be established by wickedness: but the source of the righteous will not be moved.

The righteous will be rooted and grounded in the Word of God. They will stand strong when the storms of life come their way. But those who choose to live a wicked lifestyle won’t have anything to hold to when the storms of life come their way.

We are told that a virtuous woman is a blessing to her husband: but a wife who lives vicariously and causes her husband shame is like decay in his body.

God has called us to be strong women of faith who strive to live godly lives even as the enemy tries everything in his power to bring us down. We have to hold on to Jesus and gather our strength from Him to help us fight the battles of this life.

The Bible reminds us, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 12:1-4

1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
2 A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.
3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

Things to think about:

  • How can knowledge and instruction help us to live victorious lives?
  • What happens to those who despise instruction?
  • How does being rooted and grounded in the Word of God help us to live victoriously?
  • What is a virtuous woman to her husband?
  • What does a shameful woman do to her husband?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we realize that there are those who love knowledge and instruction and there are those who detest it. Help us to realize that through Your Word we can find the knowledge and instruction that we need to live a victorious life. Give us the strength we need when the toils of life come against us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse to Journal or Memorize:

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
