Daily Bible Reading “God Remembered Noah” (Genesis 8:1-12)

God Remembered Noah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 8:1-12. God remembered Noah, and all others, including the animals that were in the ark with him. God caused a wind to blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.

Both the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain ceased to fall from heaven. The waters reverted from the earth continuously: and at the end of 150 days the waters were halted.

The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The waters continued to diminish until the tenth month. By the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains were visible.

At the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the ark that he made and sent out a raven, which flew back and forth, until the waters were dried up on the earth.

He also sent out a dove from the ark, to see if the waters had decreased on the ground; but the dove found no place to rest the sole of her foot, so she returned to Noah and the ark. The water still covered the whole earth: so Noah reached out his hand, and took the dove, and pulled her back into the ark.

After another seven days Noah sent the dove out the window of the ark again. The dove returned to him in the evening; and, lo and behold, there was a freshly picked olive leaf in her mouth: by this Noah knew that the waters no longer covered the earth. Noah waited another seven days; and sent the dove out again; but she never returned to him again.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 8:1-12

1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;

9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.

10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;

11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

Things to think about:

When did the flood rains subside from the earth?

What were some of the things Noah did to check to progress of the situation?

What were some of the signs that the flood waters had receded?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we see that the rains were stopped and the water receded from the earth. We see that Noah and his family were given signs of life again on the earth. Help us to trust you no matter what we’re going through that You will see us though. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “The Flood” (Genesis 7:13-24)

The Flood

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 7:13-24. Noah, and Shem, Ham, Japheth, the sons of Noah, Noah’s wife, and the wives of his three sons went with them, into the ark.

Along with them came every beast after his kind, all the cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.

They all went into the ark with Noah, two by two, male and female, of all flesh that had the breath of life as God commanded him. The LORD shut the door of the ark so Noah, his family, and all the animals would be protected from the flood.

The flood rains fell for forty days on the earth; the flood waters increased daily, and the water became so dense it bare the weight of the ark, and the ark was lifted up above the earth and floated on top of the water.

The water became so deep on the earth that all the mountains were covered. The water was fifteen cubits or more deep.

Every living thing that was on the face of the earth was destroyed, including man, cattle, creeping things, and the fowl of the sky. Everything that had received the breath of life and everything that lived on dry land, died.

Noah and those who were in the ark with him were the only creatures who remained alive. The waters covered the earth for 150 days.

Water is a powerful force. If you’ve ever seen an area that has been flooded out, you know some of the devastation it can cause. We had a flood last year in our area. It was nothing like the flood of Noah’s day, but it caused so much damage. There were roads, bridges, and dams that were washed away. There were people who lost their homes. There were also some people who lost their lives in the flood. Even with all the devastation our state had it was nothing compared to the loss of this flood.

Surely, Noah and his family were grateful to God for sparing their lives, but they must have also been grieved by what was going on outside of the ark. They had no idea what the future held, but they trusted God to carry them through it all. The fact that God spared their lives and the lives of the animals in the ark showed that God had plans for the future.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 7:13-24

13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.

15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:

22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

Things to think about:

Can you begin to comprehend the devastation of this flood?
How do you think Noah and his family felt?
Think about how this must have grieved God.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage and learn about all the devastation of Noah’s day, it is hard for us to comprehend. Even though we have seen floods in our region of the world, it is nothing compared to the flood in Noah’s time. We can only imagine some of the emotions that Noah and his family felt during this time. Help us to know, in spite of this, that You love us and only want the best for our lives. Give us strength to face the trials that come our way. Help us to live for You no matter what the future holds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Rains Came” (Genesis 7:1-12)

The Rains Came

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 7:1-12. In chapter seven we see that the LORD told Noah for him and his household to go into the ark. Noah was chosen because he had been righteous before God in his generation.

The LORD instructed Noah to take with him in the ark every clean beast by sevens, both male and female: and of the beasts that are not clean by two, both male and female. He also told Noah to take the fowls of the air by sevens, both male and female. He did this in order to keep seed alive on the earth.

The LORD warned Noah that in seven days he would cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. The LORD said that every living thing that He had made would be destroyed from the face of the earth.

Noah did exactly as the LORD commanded him. Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives went into the ark because the flood waters were about to come. They also loaded up the clean beasts, the unclean beasts, the fowls, and every creeping thing upon the earth, two by two into the ark, the male and female of each kind, as God commanded Noah. Wonder how Noah and his family felt as they loaded the ark? Wonder what the rest of the people thought as they saw Noah loading the ark?

After seven days flood waters came upon the earth, exactly like the LORD told Noah they would. It was the 600^th year of Noah’s life, in the second month of the year, on the 17^th day of the month, when the fountains of the deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened and the rain began to fall. The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. Can you imagine being stuck in the ark for forty days and forty nights with all the animals?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 7:1-12

1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.

6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,

9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Things to think about:

Who did God tell Noah he could take with him in the ark?

How many of each kind of animal did God tell Noah to take in the ark?

How long did it rain during the flood?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we see that Noah and his family along with the animals were loading into the ark as You instructed them to do. Help us to have the kind of faith Noah did and follow Your instructions as he did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Noah’s Ark” (Genesis 6:14-22)

Noah’s Ark

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 6:14-22. In this portion of chapter six God gives Noah the instructions to build the ark. The LORD tells Noah to make himself an ark of gopher wood. He instructs him to make rooms in the ark and to pitch it inside and out, which would make it waterproof.

God even gave Noah the dimensions that he was to make the ark. He told Noah to make the ark 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

God also instructed Noah to put a window in the top of the ark. The window was to be one cubit. He told Noah to put the door in the side of the ark with second and third stories in the ark.

This was a big boat. Can you imagine how long it took Noah to build such a boat?

God told Noah that he was going to flood the earth and destroy all flesh and every living thing on the earth would perish.

God established a covenant with Noah that he, his wife, sons, and sons’ wives would be safe from the flood by taking refuge in the ark.

He also instructed Noah to bring two of every living thing into the ark, one male and one female of each to keep them alive for the future. Noah was to include fowls of every kind, cattle, and every creeping thing, two of every sort.

Noah also had to include food for his family and all the animals inside the ark to feed them during this time. Noah trusted God completely. He followed God’s instructions and did everything that the LORD commanded him to do. He had a great faith in God in order to carry out this enormous task. Has God ever asked you to do something that seemed impossible?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 6:14-22

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Things to think about:

Can you imagine building a boat large enough to house all your family and all the animals?

What are some reasons God would spare one man and his family from the flood?

Can you imagine being the caregiver for all the animals in a boat during this time?

What kind of faith did it take for Noah to follow God’s instructions explicitly?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we are amazed at the whole idea of the ark and only one family being spared. It is also astonishing to think of one family taking care of all the animals during the flood so they could be spared. No doubt Noah was a great man of faith to follow Your instructions as he did. Help us to have faith like Noah to do anything You ask of us, knowing that what You instruct us is for our own good. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Walking with God” (Genesis 5:12-32)

Walking with God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 5:12-32. In the remainder of chapter five we continue with the descendants of Adam through Noah. Cainan was 70 years old when Mahalaleel was born. Mahalaleel means “praise of God.” Cainan lived 840 years after Mahalaleel was born, and had other sons and daughters. Cainan lived a total of 910 years before he died.

Mahalaleel was 65 years old when Jared was born. Jared means “descendent.” Mahalaleel lived 830 years after he had Jared, and had other sons and daughters. Mahalaleel lived a total of 890 before he died.

Jared was 162 years old when Enoch was born. Enoch means “dedicated.” Jared lived 800 years after Enoch was born, and had other sons and daughters. Jared lived a total of 962 before he died.

Enoch was 65 years old when Methuselah was born. Methuselah means “man of the dart.” Enoch walked with God after Methuselah was born 300 years, and had other sons and daughters. Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Methuselah was 187 years old when Lamech was born. Lamech means “powerful.” Methuselah lived 782 after Lamech was born, and had other sons and daughters. Methuselah lived a total of 969 before he died.

Lamech was 182 years old when he had a son, which he named Noah, saying, he will comfort us concerning our work and the labor of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed. Noah means “rest.” Lamech lived 595 years after he had Noah, and had other sons and daughters. Lamech lived a total of 777 years before he died.

Noah was 500 years old: and Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. We will be studying more about Noah in the near future.

You will notice in this chapter all those listed in this genealogy end with a statement, “and he died,” except Enoch, whom God spared from going through the valley of death.

Hebrews 11:5-6 tells us, “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

It is also believed that in this Scripture is a hidden message from God about what the future will bring. The message is believed to be hidden in the Hebrew translation of the names of the men listed in this chapter.

12 And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel:

13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:

16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:

26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Things to think about:

Can you imagine being so close to God that you would be able to avoid death?

Which of the names in this lesson do you remember from Bible lessons you have done or sermons you have heard in the past?

Prayer of the Day:

As we read this passage and learn about the descendants of Adam we are amazed at the story of Enoch. It’s obvious that he had a special relationship with You. Help us to walk close to You every day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
