About the book:

The Book of Psalms: Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. – Psalm 23:1

The LORD is My Shepherd

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 23:1-6. Psalm 23 is a Psalm of David. David begins this Psalm by saying, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” David compares the LORD to a shepherd.

A shepherd takes care of his sheep. He makes sure they have everything they need, including plenty of food and water. A shepherd makes sure that his sheep are not in “want” of anything. The shepherd protects his sheep from anything that may seek to harm them. He leads them along the way. The paths that the sheep traveled were often times very narrow and sometimes on steep terrains. Jesus is referred to as the “Good Shepherd.”

In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus tells us, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

David says even though he faces death he is not afraid, because he knows the LORD is watching over him, protecting him, and guiding every step of his path. David finds comfort in the LORD’S presence.

This is a very popular Psalm. It is one of my favorites. I remember reading this Psalm to my grandma not long before she passed away. This Psalm has also been a great comfort to me in times of trouble in my life. When my mother passed away and I was so distraught this Psalm brought me so much comfort. Many times as my heart was so broken I couldn’t even think of the words to pray, I would recite this Psalm to the Lord and it would comfort me and reassure me that He was right by my side taking care of me in my time of grief. It reminds me that God is in control and no matter what happens He is right by my side guiding me as I walk through this life.

David felt sure that goodness and mercy would follow him all the days of his life and when his life was over he knew he would dwell with the LORD forever. Do you have that assurance in your life?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 23:1-6

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Things to think about:

How does a shepherd care for his sheep?
How does this compare to the way the LORD cares for His children?
How can we use this Psalm to encourage ourselves and others in times of trouble?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You that David reminds us that You are our shepherd and we can trust You to care for us. Help us to put our complete faith and trust in You and not worry about the future. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “David Exalts the LORD” (Psalm 21:1-13)

David Exalts the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 21:1-13. Psalm 21 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. It is believed that not only is this Scripture talking about David as the King, but also Jesus Christ, who is the King of Kings. David rejoices in God’s strength and His salvation. Do you rejoice in God’s salvation?

David says God has given him the desires of his heart and hasn’t withheld any of his requests. The Bible tells us in Psalm 37:4, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” David delighted in the LORD, do you?

David talks of God’s blessings and favor on his life, and he praises God for crowning him as king. God blessed David more than he could ever have asked for and David was sure to give God the glory for it. We should give God glory for all His blessings.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” (Ephesians 3:20).

In verses 8-12 David talks about the enemies of the LORD and how He will destroy them. Then, in the last verse, David exalts the LORD for His strength and power.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 21:1-13

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
2 Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.
3 For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.
4 He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.
5 His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.
6 For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.
7 For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.
8 Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee.
9 Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.
10 Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.
11 For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
12 Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.
13 Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.

Things to think about:

How do you praise God for His salvation?
When is the last time you thanked God for His blessings on your life?
In what ways do you thank God for answering your prayers?
Why should we ask God to protect us from our enemies?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture where David is praising You for Your strength and salvation. He is also thanking You for answering his prayers and blessing his life. Help us to praise and worship You for all Your blessings on our lives, and most of all, for Your gift of salvation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call. – Psalm 20:9

Daily Bible Reading “Save, LORD” (Psalm 20:1-9)

Save, LORD

Today Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 20:1-9. Psalm 20 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David starts this Psalm by saying, “The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble.” Don’t you want God to hear you when you’re in trouble?

He calls on God to defend and send help from the sanctuary and strengthen them from Zion. Do you ever feel like you need strength to carry on? God can give you the strength you need. Many times we turn to our loved ones to help us in our times of trouble, but they may be busy and not have time to be bothered with our problems. God is always available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He is never too busy to hear our cries for help.

David asks God to remember their offerings and their burnt sacrifices. He declares that they will rejoice at the salvation of the LORD. He asks for God to answer all of their petitions. David says he knows God saves His anointed.

God sent Jesus, His Son, to die on the cross so He could become our Savior by being the sacrifice God accepted as redemption for our sins. We can trust in Him to forgive us of our sins and give us salvation. We can have victory through Jesus. We can be saved from the enemy. Have you put your faith and trust in Jesus as your Savior? If not, He will hear your cry. Call out to Him today.

David says some people trust in their military, but we put our trust in God. God is our provider. He is our protector and defender. He saves us from the enemy. Others are defeated, but we are lifted up. David’s last cry of this Psalm is, “Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.” Imagine the people of Israel singing this Psalm as a prayer.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 20:1-9

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;
3 Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.
4 Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.
5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.
6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.
9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you cry out to God in times of trouble?
Share some of the times in your life when God has saved you from trouble.
What are some times of trouble in which we can pray for fellow believers?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You that we can call on You not only when we are in trouble, but any time day or night. You are always available and ready to hear from us. Help us to turn our troubles over to You and not try to handle them on our own. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Heavens Declare His Glory

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 19:1-14.
Psalm 19 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. I love this Psalm. David talks about how the heavens and the earth declare the glory of God and show His handiwork.

We see God’s work in creation everywhere we look, from the earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars. They don’t speak, but their very existence show the glory of God. When we look at all the creatures God created and all their different attributes we see His handiwork.

John 1:1-4 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Psalm 19:7-11 tells us about the law of the LORD. Some of the words that the Psalmist uses to describe the law are: perfect, sure, and right. They are standards that God set forth for us.

David asks, “Who can understand his own errors?” We have to accept the fact that we are all sinners and we need Jesus to save us from our sins.

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 19:14 which says, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” What a great prayer for all of us.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 19:1-14

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

What was the purpose of the law?
What do the words in verse 14 mean to you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for Your creation; the heavens, earth, sun, moon, stars, and all the earth that declare Your glory. Help us to give thanks to You for all of Your provision. Let the words of our mouths, and the meditation of our hearts, be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, our strength, and our redeemer. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
