Daily Bible Reading “God Rewards the Righteous” (Psalm 58:1-11)

God Rewards the Righteous

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 58:1-11. Psalm 58 is a Psalm of David. In this psalm David is quite direct in his speech. We need to remember that Scripture is inspired by God, so David is writing what the LORD is laying on his heart. He asks the judges if they are speaking righteously and making righteous decisions. How many times in the world we live in today do those in authority not make righteous decisions?

God knows the intentions of our hearts. He knows the desires of our hearts. He knows if we are making decisions with evil in our hearts. He describes the wicked in a very descriptive manner. Some of the leaders tell lies and are deceptive in their decisions. Does this remind you of the leaders of today?

David says the enemy is like a roaring lion, and he asks God to break their teeth. He asks God to take care of the situation. When we are going through the attacks of the enemy we need to pray and ask God for His will to be done in a situation. Not our will, but His will. Don’t try to take matters in your own hands. You may make the situation worse than it was in the beginning.

When I read this chapter it reminded me of this Scripture in Romans 12:19 which says, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
The Book of Esther: A Story of Love and Favor is a good example of how the wicked are punished and the righteous are rewarded for their faithfulness and obedience to God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 58:1-11

1 [[To the Chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David.]] Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?
2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;
5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.
6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.
7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.
8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.
10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Things to think about:

Have you ever encountered someone like David describes, and under what circumstances?
How should we handle situations like David described in this psalm?
Can you think of some examples of how leaders of today have made unrighteous decisions in their business or family lives?
Can you think of some leaders you admire who make righteous decisions?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 58. We pray that You will protect us from those who have wicked intentions in their heart. Help us to bring our cares and concerns to You and not try to handle them on our own. Give us strength, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth. – Psalm 58:11

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Daily Bible Reading “Be Exalted, O God” (Psalm 57:1-11)

Be Exalted, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 57:1-11. Psalm 57 is a Psalm of David that was written when he fled from Saul in the cave. David cries out to God to be merciful to him. He declares that he trusts in God and will find refuge in the shadow of His wings. How many times in your life have you been in a situation where you needed to find refuge in God?

David completely trusts God to protect him from his enemies. He trusts God to send down His mercy and truth from heaven. In the midst of David’s battle he praised and worshiped God. This is a good example for us. When the enemy wages war against us the best thing we can do is cry out to God for His deliverance, His protection, and His grace and mercy during our time of need.

Sometimes we just need to cry out to God when we are in trouble. He may not take the problem away, but He may change the circumstances or give us the strength and wisdom to endure the situation. Don’t try to handle every situation in your own strength. God is there for you. He wants to take care of you. Reach out to Him and ask for His help.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 57:1-11

1 [[To the Chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave.]] Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.
3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.
6 They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

8 Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

Things to think about:

Why should we cry out to God in times of trouble?
How can we let God know we trust Him to protect us?
In what ways can we give praise, honor, and glory to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 57. Even when David was in trouble he found refuge in the covering of Your wings. LORD, we thank You that we can cry out to You and You hear our prayers. We thank You that You watch over us and protect us. Be exalted O God, let Your glory be above all the earth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Have You Put Your Trust in God” (Psalm 56:1-13)

Have You Put Your Trust in God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 56:1-13. Psalm 56 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician to the tune of Jonath-elem-recho-kim, which is thought to be the tune of “the silent dove of far-off places.” This psalm was written when the Philistines captured David at Gath. David cries out for God to have mercy on him because men were out to destroy him.

David put his trust in the LORD. He declares he will praise God’s Word and will not fear what men can do to him. David asks the LORD if his tears are written in God’s book. Did you know God has a bottle for your tears and a book where He records them? That’s what David says. God cares about your sorrow. He loves you and cares about you. Have you put your trust in God? Do you trust Him completely to take care of everything in your life?

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 56:1-13

1 [[To the Chief Musician upon Jonathelemrechokim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.]] Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.
2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.
7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.
8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.
11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Things to think about:

What was David trusting God to do?
In what ways are you afraid of what people can do to you?
How can we show God that we trust Him completely?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 56. In this Psalm of David, we learn how much You care for us and for our sorrows. David says You have our tears in a bottle and record them in Your book. This reinforces how much You are concerned about what we are going through in this life. Help us to be grateful for Your love and concern. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear My Prayer, O God” (Psalm 55:1-23)

Hear My Prayer, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 55:1-23. Psalm 55 is a Psalm of David to the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, (a song or poem of contemplation). David calls out to God to listen to his prayer and not to hide from his pleas for favor.

David was restless and anxious because of his enemies who constantly taunted and threatened him. His heart hurt and he wished he could fly like a dove, far away in the desert to be at peace.

David asked God to destroy his enemies and divide their tongues because they had caused violence and strife in the city. He said they walked around the walls day and night doing mischievous things and causing sorrow in the city. Wickedness, deceit, and treachery never departed from her streets.

If the people threatening and slandering David had been his enemies, he could have borne the abuse, but his own friends challenged him, which caused him much grief and sorrow. Have you ever experienced having your friends turn their backs on you? Or find out they’re not really on your side? Have you even had people at church turn against you? David responded by calling on the LORD.

David did not have mercy on them when he asked God to let death overtake them quickly, and let them go straight to hell. David was tired of their wickedness.

David said as for him, he cried out to God morning, night, and at noon. He had confidence that the LORD heard his cries and would save him.

David declared that God had delivered his soul in peace from the battle that was against him. He knew that God heard his pleas, and would afflict those who came against him because they didn’t fear God.

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.” David had confidence in God that he would take care of his enemies. He knew that God wouldn’t let these deceitful men continue to live like this. David trusted God completely to protect him from those who had turned their back on him.

I have had times like David, haven’t you? When I became a Christian author, I thought all my family, friends, and church family would support me completely. That was not necessarily true. I have had complete strangers send me ugly emails telling me to stop sharing God’s Word. I have had family members say cutting remarks about me being on the computer so much. I have had friends who stopped following me on social media. Some of the people I thought would support me the most have turned their backs on me.

Sometimes people are jealous when you succeed at doing something, or they may think or even say, “Who do they think they are.” I know I’m not perfect, but I strive to do what the LORD wants me to do. I’d love to have everybody’s support, but I know that’s not realistic. All I can do is do what I think the LORD wants me to and let Him deal with the rest. Don’t let anybody stop you from doing what you feel the Lord wants you to do.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 55:1-23

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Things to think about:

Was David’s battle with his enemy in this Scripture or was it with someone who was supposed to be his friend? How do we know?
What did David want God to do with those who were opposing him?
Has anything like this ever happened to you? If so, when?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Psalms we see that David was distraught. He poured his heart out to You and begged for Your help. Help us to know that You are always there for us and when life is closing in we can call out to You. Help us to have faith that You will hear and answer our prayers. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God is My Deliverer” (Psalm 54:1-7)

God is My Deliverer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 54:1-7. Psalm 54 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician for stringed instruments. The Ziphims, who were the people of Ziph, went to Saul and told him that David was hiding among them.

David cries out, “Hear my prayer, O God.” Strangers had risen up against him and oppressors were seeking his soul. David declares that God is his helper. He has faith in God that He would take care of his enemies. David declares he will praise God for His deliverance. Have you ever been in a position like David in which you needed God to deliver you?

The story of David hiding from Saul in Ziph is recorded in 1 Samuel 26. Since this lesson is short, why not turn in your Bible and read the background story of this psalm? It will give you a better understanding of what David was going through. You will also see how God led David from place to place to protect him from his enemies.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 54:1-7

1 [[To the Chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us? Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Things to think about:

How many times has God delivered you from the enemy?
How did you give God praise and glory for His deliverance?
In what ways do you think of God as your helper?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 54. It reminds us that even when we are in trouble and the enemy has sought to destroy us, You are our deliverer. You are our helper. Help us to remember to praise You for Your protection over us as Your people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
