Saul and David Make Peace

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 24:16-22. Saul wept when David finished sharing with Saul his true feelings. Saul called David, “My Son,” and told David that he was more righteous than him.

Saul realized that David had rewarded him with good even though Saul only sought evil against David. Saul was impressed that David didn’t kill him even though God had given David the opportunity to annihilate Saul if he wanted to.

Even Saul realized that for a man to let his enemy go away safe when he had the opportunity to do away with him was admirable. Because of David’s actions Saul knew that David should be king of Israel.

Saul asked David to swear to him before God that he wouldn’t cut off Saul’s seed or destroy Saul’s name in his family. David swore as Saul requested. Saul departed and went home. David and his men returned to the cave.

It must have taken a lot of courage on David’s part to confront Saul. How many times do we avoid confrontation with someone who has something against us? God gave David the strength to confront Saul and it paid off big time for David.

Had David not confronted Saul he would have still been on the run, constantly watching over his shoulder and wondering when Saul was going to attack. By David taking the initiative to talk to Saul and trying to resolve the issue Saul saw David’s heart in the matter and accepted the fact that David should be king.

Is there someone you need to confront? Do you need to share your heart with someone so they can know your true intentions? If so, pray and ask God to give you the courage to take the steps necessary to resolve the issue.

Ask God to prepare the heart of the one you need to talk to and help them to accept your proposal. Sometimes a small misunderstanding can be blown out of proportion. People spend years or even a lifetime avoiding one another or worse because of a simple misunderstanding. Why not resolve these issues in your life today so you can live in peace once again?

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 24:16-22

16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
21 Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

What was Saul’s reaction to David’s heart-felt plea?

What kind of agreement did David and Saul come to?

How can we use David and Saul’s situation to help us in our relationships?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture and see how Saul and David’s conflict was resolved help us to use this example in our own lives. Help us resolve any issues we have with others. Give us the courage that we need and the words to say to handle these matters. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “David Confronts Saul” (1 Samuel 24:8-15)

David Confronts Saul

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 24:8-15. David ran out of the cave and called for Saul saying, “My lord the king.” Saul looked back at David. David bowed to Saul telling him that he knew that Saul had heard that he was out to get him.

David explains to Saul that he had every opportunity to kill him if he wanted to. David let Saul know that he was encouraged to kill him, but spared his life because he respected Saul as the leader God anointed him to be. David was brave to confront Saul knowing that Saul was looking for him.

He begged Saul to consider the fact that he cut his skirt off, but spared his life. By David’s actions Saul should realize that David didn’t intend to harm him. David couldn’t understand why even though he had not sinned against Saul, Saul was hunting him down to kill him.

David cries out for the LORD to avenge him with Saul and deliver him out of Saul’s hands.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 24:8-15

8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S anointed.
11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
15 The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

Why did David run after Saul?

What did David tell Saul his intentions were?

Who did David ask to deliver him from Saul?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we see that David had not intentions of hurting Saul. He respected Saul as Your anointed one. David was brave to confront Saul when he knew that Saul was hunting him down to kill him. Help us to be honorable in our actions with one another as David was with Saul. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “David Sneaks up on Saul” (1 Samuel 24:1-7)

“David Sneaks up on Saul”

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 24:1-7. When Saul returned from battle with the Philistines he learned that David was in the wilderness of Engedi. Saul gathered three thousand men and went out to find David and his men in the rocks of wild goats, near the desert of Engedi.

As Saul and his men journeyed to find David, they came to some sheep pens along the way. Close by was a cave and Saul went in to relieve himself. Saul wasn’t aware that David and his men were in the back of the cave.

David’s men told him that the LORD had delivered his enemy, Saul, into his hands and he could do whatever he wanted to Saul. David crept up behind Saul and cut off the tail of Saul’s robe without Saul even knowing David was anywhere around.

David’s conscience bothered him. He felt guilty for cutting off Saul’s skirt. David told his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.” Then, he forbids his men to go after Saul.

Saul left the cave and went on his way still not knowing that David and his men were in the same cave he was in or that David sneaked up behind him and cut off the tail of his robe.

David took his opportunity to get the advantage over Saul then felt guilty for his actions. Have you ever taken an opportunity to get the upper hand on someone and then felt guilty for your actions? This is how David was feeling.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 24:1-7

1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.
5 And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.
6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.
7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

What did Saul do when he found out where David was?

What did David do to Saul?

What was David’s reaction to what he had done to Saul?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in 1 Samuel we see that David had an opportunity to kill Saul if he wanted to, but he only cut off the tail of his robe. David then felt guilty for his actions against Saul. Help us to use discretion in our interactions with other people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “David Escapes the Wrath of Saul” (1 Samuel 23:14-29)

David Escapes the Wrath of Saul

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 23:14-29. David remained in the wilderness of Ziph hiding out in the mountains. Saul searched for David ever day. But God didn’t deliver David into the hands of Saul.

David knew that Saul was looking for him. David was held up in the wilderness. Jonathan, Saul’s son, went to be with David and strengthened him in LORD.

Jonathan comforted David reassuring him that Saul wasn’t going to kill him. Jonathan assured David that he would be king over Israel and Jonathan would be by his side to support him.

Jonathan and David made a covenant declaring these things before the LORD. Jonathan returned to his house and David remained in hiding in the wilderness.

The Ziphites came to Saul in Gibeah and inquired of Saul saying, “Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?”

The Ziphites beckoned Saul to come and they would deliver David into his hands. Saul blessed the LORD saying the LORD had compassion on him.

Saul told them to go seek David and inquire who had seen him and where they saw him. Saul sent them to find all of David’s hiding places so he could go to Judah and conquer him.

When David heard that Saul was on his trail he went down from the mountain to hide in the wilderness of Maon, a plain south of Jeshimon.

Saul and his men were on one side of the mountain and David on the other side. Saul’s men surrounded David and were ready to take him, when Saul got word that the Philistines were attacking.

Saul and his men had to leave their quest of hunting David and went to fight the Philistines. Once again David escaped the wrath of Saul. Because of this they called that place Selahammahlekoth, the cliff of escapes.

Isn’t it amazing how quickly circumstances can change. The enemy was closing in on David and then their attention was diverted to the attacks of the Philistines. How many times in life have you narrowly escaped the attacks of the enemy? David took this opportunity to leave and go to dwell in strongholds in Engedi.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 23:14-29

14 And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
15 And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
16 And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
17 And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
18 And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
19 Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
20 Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
21 And Saul said, Blessed be ye of the LORD; for ye have compassion on me.
22 Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilly.
23 See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
24 And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
25 Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
27 But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.
28 Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Selahammahlekoth.
29 And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.

Who came to visit David and what pact did they make?

What happened when Saul found out where David was?

Who joined Saul in his endeavor to find David?

What happened to save David from the wrath of Saul?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we see that Saul was hot on David’s trail again. David was able to escape the wrath of Saul because the Philistines invaded the land. Help us to escape the wrath of the enemy as You did David in this Scripture. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “David Conquers the Philistines at Keilah” (1 Samuel 23:1-13)

David Conquers the Philistines at Keilah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 23:1-13. David received news that the Philistines were fighting against Keilah. Keilah was a city of Judah northwest of Hebron.

The Philistines were robbing the threshingfloors. A threshingfloor was a place, usually at the gates of the city, where they would gather their crops such as corn or barley and trod them out. The crops were important to the people of Israel. They used them for food and also to trade for anything else they needed.

David prayed to God and asked Him if he should go and conquer the Philistines. God gave David the go ahead to go to Keilah and defeat the Philistines.

When David told his men that they were going to Keilah to conquer the Philistines the men were afraid. So David prayed again and the LORD assured him that He would deliver the Philistines into their hands.

David and his men did as the LORD instructed them and He helped them to win the battle against the Philistines. They also confiscated their cattle. With God’s help David and his army were able to save the people of Keilah.

Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, went with David to Keilah and brought an ephod (priestly garment) with him.

When Saul heard that David was a Keilah he felt sure that he could capture him since Keilah was a town with gates and bars.

David heard that Saul was coming to Keilah. He had Abiathar bring the ephod and he prayed to God and asked Him if it was true that Saul was coming to try to capture him.

God told David that it was a sure thing that Saul was on his way to Keilah in order to capture him. David asked God if the men of Keilah would deliver him into the hands of Saul and God assured David that they would deliver him into the hands of his enemy.

So David and his men left Keilah to seek shelter and refuge from Saul. Can you imagine being constantly on the run as David was in fear of his life? Thank goodness David had God on his side to lead, guide and direct him so that he could stay a step ahead of Saul.

We too can conquer the enemy when God is on our side. Be sure to stay in close contact with God so He can help you divert the attacks of the enemy by leading, guiding and directing you in the right way.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 23:1-13

1 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
2 Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
3 And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
4 Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
5 So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7 And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.
8 And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9 And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.
10 Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
11 Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.
12 Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
13 Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.

Where was it that David heard the Philistines were attacking?

What did God tell David to do concerning the Philistine attacks?

How successful were David and his men at conquering the Philistines?

What happened when Saul found out where David was?

What difference does it make in our lives when we have God on our side?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

In this Scripture in 1 Samuel we see where David had another battle with the enemy. We see that You helped David and his men to conquer the enemy. All the while Saul was on David’s coat tail trying to capture him, but You led David away. Help us to stay in close contact with You so You can help us to avoid the enemies attacks. Watch over us and protect us from the snares of the enemy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
