Daily Bible Reading “God Commissions King Cyrus to Build the Temple” (Ezra 1:1-11)

CyrusGod Commissions King Cyrus to Build the Temple

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Ezra 1-11. The Book of Ezra starts in the first year of the reign of Cyrus king of Persia. Also known as, Cyrus the Great, he reigned as king of Persia for thirty years, from 559BC to 530BC. Fulfilling Jeremiah’s prophecy, (Jeremiah 25, 29) God stirred the heart of King Cyrus to issue a proclamation saying that God charged him to build a Temple of God at Jerusalem, in Judah.

King Cyrus asks for men of God to go to Jerusalem and build the Temple of God. Cyrus also requests that people of the surrounding area who encounter the Israelites as they travel would contribute gold, silver, supplies, beasts, and offerings. These provisions would help them travel to Jerusalem and build the house of God.

God stirred the hearts of the priests, Levites and the leaders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to go to Jerusalem to build the temple. All their neighbors contributed silver, gold, and various valuable items. Even King Cyrus brought from his treasury the vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had looted from Jerusalem and placed his pagan temple. He understood that these vessels rightfully belonged in the house of the LORD.

Cyrus instructed Mithredath, who was the treasurer of Persia, to count the valuables, record them, and present them to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah leading the exiles in their return. The total number of gold and silver pieces Sheshbazzar brought with them from Babylon to Jerusalem numbered 5,400. God called the exiles to go to Jerusalem to build His temple, He planned to provide everything they needed to complete the task.

Daily Bible Reading:

Ezra 1:1-11

1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all [them] whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.

6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

7 Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;

8 Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

9 And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,

10 Thirty basons of gold, silver basons of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.

11 All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.

Things to think about:

  • Has God ever asked you to do a work for Him?
  • How did God provide for you?
  • What can we learn from this lesson in the book of Ezra?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You, as we study the book of Ezra, we see Your hand at work right from the start. You stirred the hearts of Your people to build the Temple of God. We also see Your provision for them. We thank You that You are our provider, giving us the means to do whatever work You call us to. Help us to be obedient to Your will for our lives. We love you LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Generosity” (Proverbs 11:24-31)

Proverbs 11 generosity

Generosity

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 11:24-31. This Scripture reminds us that there are those who give generously, and yet they prosper even more; and there are those who are greedy, and it leads them to poverty.

The blessed soul will become prosperous: and those who pour into others will be filled also. Those who share the gospel with others God will provide ways for them to be filled as well. If we are continually pouring out ourselves into others and never get filled up we won’t be able to continue pouring into the lives of others. Eventually our reserves we would become empty. There has to be a constant refilling of our Spirit in order for us to be able to refresh others.

Those who are stingy and withhold corn, the people will curse: but blessing will be on those who are willing to sell it.

Have you ever noticed how farmers plow their field and don’t glean it completely, but leave some behind for the poor and needy? These people are blessed not only by the crops they sell, but also because they care for those in need.

Those who diligently seek good procure favor: but those who seek evil, it will come to them.

If we seek good we will find favor with God and man, but if we look for trouble we are sure to find it.

Those who trust in their riches will fall: but the righteous will flourish like a growing branch.

We can’t trust in our riches because they may be taken away. But when we put our faith and trust in God we will prosper in our soul and in our life.

Those who cause trouble in their own house will only inherit the wind: and the fool will be a servant to the wise of heart.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and those who win souls are wise.

Those who are righteous will be rewarded in the earth: even more the wicked and the sinner will reap the consequences of their sin and wickedness.

Much of this Scripture is about generosity. One of my favorite Scriptures that teaches about the benefits of being generous is Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 11:24-31

24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

Things to think about:

  • How are those who are generous rewarded?
  • How are the righteous rewarded?
  • What are the results for those who are wicked?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that we all get our just rewards whether they be good reward for righteous living or the consequences of our sin and ungodly living. Help us to walk in Your ways and win souls for the kingdom. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Speaking” (Proverbs 8:32-36)

god in cloudsGod Speaking

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 8:32-36. In this Scripture we find a call to listen. Not only to listen, but to hear and seek. Seek wisdom and seek the LORD.

Listen to me, you children: blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and don’t refuse it.

Blessed is the man who hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

Whoever finds me finds life, and will obtain favor from the LORD. But those who sin against me wrongs their own soul: all those who hate me love death.

We can look at this two ways. First, as those who find wisdom find life and those who hate instruction find the path to destruction. Do you seek wisdom?

Secondly, and most importantly, as God speaking and reminding us that those who seek Him and find Him through a relationship with His son, Jesus Christ, will have life eternal. But, those who hate Him will suffer eternal death. Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 8:32-36

32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Things to think about:

  • What are we called to do in this Scripture?
  • What do we find if we seek?
  • What is the result of not seeking wisdom?
  • What is the result for those who refuse Jesus as Savior?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we realize that we should be seeking wisdom from above. We should be seeking Jesus. Help us to find wisdom, but more importantly help us to find a lasting eternal relationship with You through Your son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
