Daily Bible Reading “God Made Woman” (Genesis 2:18-25)

Genesis 2 18God Made Woman

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:18-25. In this passage of Scripture, we see that the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

God created all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air from the ground. Then, He brought them to Adam to see what he would like to call them: and whatever Adam called them, that was their name. Adam gave names to all the cattle, birds, and every beast of the field.

There was no companion for Adam. God recognized that it wasn’t good for man to be alone. So, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come upon Adam, and as he slept, the LORD took one of his ribs, and then He closed up Adam’s flesh. Basically God performed surgery on Adam removing one of his ribs.

The LORD took the rib, which He had taken from man, and made a woman, and brought her to the man. God didn’t want the man to be alone.

He made woman from the man’s rib this may signify that the woman is to walk beside the man as a companion. Some say this may be why women are so emotional because she was created from the bone that is closest to a man’s heart, the center of all our emotions.

Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” God created woman to be a companion and helper to the man. They are to work together to create a home life and family together. This was the first marriage and a great example of what God intended the marriage relationship to be like.

Verse 24 is often used in marriage ceremonies still today, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed. At this time in history there was no sin in the world neither was there any clothes like there are today, so the man and woman had no reason to be ashamed that they were naked.

Proverbs 18:22 says, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-11, reminds us, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:18-25

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Things to think about:

  • Who named the animals?
  • Why did God create woman?
  • How did God create woman?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we are in awe at the way You took a rib from man and created woman. There is nothing more precious than a good relationship between a husband and wife. Thank You for creating that partnership for us. Help us not to take for granted the importance of the husband/wife relationship in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Garden of Eden” (Genesis 2:8-17)

Genesis 2 8The Garden of Eden

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:8-17. In this Scripture we see that, God planted a garden toward the east in Eden; and he put the man he created there.

God made every tree that is beautiful, and those that are good for food to grow from the ground. He also caused the tree of life to grow in the middle of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

There was a river that flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was separated into four heads.

The first river is called Pison. It flows through the land of Havilah, where there is gold. The gold of that land is good: there are also precious stones.

The second river is called Gihon, which flows through the land of Ethiopia. The third river is called Hiddekel, which flows toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

God put the man in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. He instructed the man, saying, “You may eat of every tree of the garden without restrictions, except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Its fruit is forbidden: if you eat from it you will die” (paraphrased).

I think of the Garden of Eden as being a place of paradise. The most beautiful place you’d ever want to see, with everything you would need provided. I’ve included a map I found online to help you get a picture of where the Garden of Eden may have been located.

Garden of Eden

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:8-17

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.

14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Things to think about:

  • What is the name of the garden God created?
  • What is the name of the four rivers that flowed from Eden?
  • What restriction did God give the man in the garden?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we learn of the beautiful garden that You created. Thank You for all the beautiful trees You created in this world, including those which are good for food. Thank You for the rivers, streams, and ocean that You created. Help us as we enjoy all these things to remember You are the creator. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Genealogy of Heaven and Earth” (Genesis 2:4-7)

Genesis 2 7The Genealogy of Heaven and Earth

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:4-7. This is the origin of the heavens and the earth when the LORD God created them. God also created every plant and herb before it grew on the earth. Notice how this Scripture talks about God creating the plant life before it appeared on the earth.

The LORD God hadn’t caused it to rain upon the earth yet, and there was nobody to work the soil. Then, He caused a vapor to come up from the ground, and it dampened the entire surface of the earth.

The LORD God formed man from the dust of the earth. Then, God blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man, which God created in His own image, became a living soul. This was the beginning of mankind as we know it.

Think about a potter who forms a piece of art from clay. It is an inanimate object. But, God took His creation, breathed life into it, and it became a living being.

In the same way that we see genealogies of people throughout the Bible, these Scriptures are a genealogy, or a recount of the history of God’s creation. In a few chapters we will begin to see the genealogies of men, beginning with Adam.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:4-7

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Things to think about:

  • What part of the creation amazes you most?
  • What did God cause to happen before He created man? Why?
  • What are some of the reasons God created man?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we think of the vastness of Your creation, we are amazed by Your creativity, and power. Thank You for creating this wonderful world for us to live in. Thank You for creating us and giving us a chance to have fellowship with You. Help us to never take all You do for us for granted. Help us to always be grateful for Your many blessings. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Seventh Day” (Genesis 2:1-3)

Genesis 2 3The Seventh Day

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:1-3. On the seventh day, God had finished creating the heavens and earth, and all the other things He created. So, God took a break from His work and rested on the seventh day. He blessed the seventh day, and declared it to be holy, because it was a day of rest for Him, after the creation. God set an example for us letting us know that we need to work, but our body, mind, and spirit also needs rest.

Exodus 20:11 calls the seventh day the Sabbath day, “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

In Exodus 31:16-17 God instructed Moses about the Sabbath, “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.” This is why the Jewish people observe the seventh day of the week as their, Sabbath, day of rest.

Christians on the other hand, observe Sunday as their day of worship and rest, because Jesus rose on the first day of the week, and the work was finished. John 19:30 tells us, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

It was also, the first day of the week, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church in Acts 2. God created light on the first day of the week and Jesus is the “Light” of the world. Jesus says in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” The first day of the week is considered to be the Lord’s Day.

In the Old Testament the people lived under the Law, but after Jesus’ resurrection, as believers, we now live by grace, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:23-25 says, “But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:1-3

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Things to think about:

  • What day of the week do you take as your day of rest and worship?
  • Why do the Jewish people observe the Sabbath on the seventh day?
  • Why do Christians observe Sunday as the Lord’s Day?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage of Scripture we see Your example of work and rest. Help us to observe a day of rest and worship to You. You show us that You created our bodies to work, but we also need rest. Help us to treat our bodies as Your temple. Help us to serve You in a way that brings honor and glory to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Creation Day Six” (Genesis 1:24-31)

Genesis 1 26Creation Day Six

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 1:24-31. On the sixth day of creation, God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.”

God made the beast of the field, cattle, and every creature that creeps on the earth according to its kind. When God looked at His creation, He saw that it was good.

Next, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

God created man in His own image. He created both men and women. God blessed them, and God told them to, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

God said to them, “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

God saw everything that He had made, and He thought that it was very good. The evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Notice that God created the herbs and fruit trees before He created the creatures that would need them for food. In His creation He made sure that He took care of the needs of every creature by providing them with everything they would need.

God gave man authority over all the creatures that He created. God also gave man and all the other creatures the ability to reproduce and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply.

Psalm 100:3 reminds us, “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

Isaiah 64:8 compares God to a potter and mankind to the clay, “But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.”

Acts 17:28-29 calls us God’s offspring, “For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 1:24-31

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Things to think about:

  • What did God create in this Scripture?
  • What did He provide for food for the creatures that He created?
  • Who did God give authority over all His creation?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this passage of Scripture we are thankful that You created us and that You created this world for us to live. You provide all of our needs. Help us not to take Your love and provision for granted. Help us to always be grateful for everything You do for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
