The LORD Rewards the Righteous

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 22:21-30. David tells us that the LORD rewarded him because of his righteousness and the cleanness of his hands. He declares that he observed the ways of the LORD and has not let wickedness come between him and the LORD.

David kept the LORD’S judgments and statues before him and didn’t depart from them. He walked upright before the LORD and kept away from sin. It is so easy to let sin creep into our lives. In order to keep sin out of our lives we have to focus on the LORD and His ways. The LORD rewarded David because He found him to be clean.

David declares that the LORD shows mercy to the merciful. He is upright with those who are upright. With the pure, He is pure. The LORD wrestles with those who are deceitful. He saves those who are humble and humbles those who are proud.

David admits that the LORD is his lamp. He lights David’s path and guides him along the way. With the LORD’S help David was able to drive away a band of soldiers and leap over a wall.

David acknowledged his dependence on God. He studied the words of the LORD and kept them before him to remind him to walk upright before the LORD.

David knew that he wouldn’t have been able to defeat his enemy without the help of the LORD. The LORD watched over him and protected him. He guided him through his life. He gave David strength and wisdom to fight the battles with which he was confronted. The LORD rewarded David for his faithfulness to Him. What can we learn from David’s example?

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 22:21-30

21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
26 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
29 For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
30 For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.

Why did the LORD reward David?
What are some other reasons the LORD might reward us?
How should we live if we want to receive the LORD’S blessings on our lives?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in 2 Samuel we see that you rewarded David because of his righteousness. Help us as we strive to live righteous lives. Forgive us of the times we have been unrighteous. Help us to be what You would have us to be and do what You would have us to do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Defended David” (2 Samuel 22:11-20)

The LORD Defended David

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 22:11-20. David declared that the LORD rode upon a cherub, and flew on the wings of the wind. The dark waters and thick clouds of the skies surrounded him in darkness.

Because of his brightness bolts of lightning were kindled and the LORD sent thunder from heaven. The voice of the Most High made his presence known.

He sent out arrows of lightning and scattered them; and confused them. The valleys of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the earth were discovered. The wind howled and the LORD rebuked them with the blast of breath from his nostrils.

The LORD sent from heaven, he took him; he drew him out of many waters; He delivered David from his enemy, and from those who hated him: because they overpowered him.

David said that the enemy attacked him when he was in distress, but the LORD came to his rescue. He lead David into a large place and rescued him from his enemy, because the LORD delighted in him.

Has there ever been a time in your life when you could say that the LORD came to your defense? If so, how did He make His presence known? In what ways did He protect you from the enemy?

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 22:11-20

11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
19 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

Things to think about:

Who came to David’s rescue during his time of trouble?
In what ways did the LORD attack the enemy?
How was David able to escape his enemies attack?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in 2 Samuel we see that You protected David from his enemies. Help us to know that You are our protector and our guide. You will keep the enemy from destroying us. Thank You for watching over us. Help us to seek Your leadership and guidance at all times. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is My Rock” (2 Samuel 22:1-10)

The LORD is My Rock

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 22:1-10. David sang this song to the LORD the day the LORD delivered him from the hand of his enemies, and the hand of Saul.

David also talks about the LORD being our deliverer in Psalm 34:19 which says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

He continues, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. The God of my rock; in him will I trust. He is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, my refuge, my savior; you saved me from violence.”

I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so will I be saved from my enemies.

When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

The sorrows of hell surrounded me. The snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called on the LORD, and cried to my God: and he heard my voice from his temple.

Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was angry.

Smoke came out of his nostrils, and the fire from his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

Judges 5:4-5 tells us, LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water. The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.

He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.

If you are a parent, how does it make you feel if someone is bothering your child? Can you imagine how it makes God feel when the enemy attacks one of his children? What do we learn about the LORD in this Scripture?

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 22:1-10

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

What does David declare the LORD to be? Why?
How did the LORD respond to David’s cry?
What evidence does the Scripture share of how the LORD felt?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in 2 Samuel we see that David called You his rock. You were the stable one in his life. He loved You and he knew You loved him as well. Help us to stand firm with You as the rock in our lives. Protect us from the snares of the enemy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Slaying the Giants” (2 Samuel 21:15-22)

Slaying the Giants

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 21:15-22. The Philistines went to war again against Israel. David and his men went to war with them. By this time King David was getting older and he became weak.

Ishbibenob, who was one of the sons of the giant, tried to slay David. He had a new sword whose spear was made of brass, weighing three hundred shekels or 7 1/2 pounds.

Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, came to David’s rescue, and killed the Philistine. Then the men of David told him that he shouldn’t go out to battle with them anymore. They were concerned that he would be killed in battle.

There was another battle with the Philistines at Gob: where Sibbechai, the Hushathite, killed Saph, who was another one of the sons of the giant.

During the next battle in Gob with the Philistines, Elhanan, the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Then, there was still another battle in Gath. There was a huge man, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty four digits in total; who was also born to the giant.

When he defied Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David’s brother, slew him.

These four were sons of the giant who lived in Gath. They all died by the hand of David, and his servants.

We all have giants in our lives that we have to slay. They may not be physical giants, as are mentioned in this Scripture, but instead may be spiritual giants. We need to declare war on the enemy in this battle of life. What are some of the giants in your life that you need to slay?

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 21:15-22

15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.
16 And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.
19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.
21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him.
22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Things to think about:

With whom was Israel at war?
What happened to King David?
Who came to his rescue?
Who were the ones that were mentioned in this Scripture who were killed?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this Scripture in 2 Samuel. As we read the Scripture we learn that David and his men came up against giants on the battlefield. Help us as we confront the giants in our life. Give us the strength we need to slay these giants. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Rizpah and David Honor Saul” (2 Samuel 21:10-14)

Rizpah and David Honor Saul

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 21:10-14. Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, took sackcloth, and spread it out on the rock for her. She kept watch over the bodies of Saul’s sons from the beginning of the harvest until the rain came down on them from heaven. She didn’t allow the birds to rest on them during the day, or the beasts to bother them at night.

David heard what Rizpah had done. She was the daughter of Aiah, who was Saul’s concubine.

David went and took the bones of Saul and Jonathan, his son, from the men of Jabeshgilead. They stole them from the street at Bethshan, where the Philistines hanged them, when the Philistines slew Saul in Gilboa.

David gathered the bones of Saul and Jonathan; and the bones of the men who were hanged.

They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the tomb of Kish, Saul’s father. They did exactly as the king commanded. Once this task was completed, God answered their prayers concerning the land.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 21:10-14

10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:
13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.
14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.

What was special about these bones?
What was Ripzah’s role in this story? Who was she?
What did David do?
How did David honoring the bodies of Saul and his sons change God’s perspective? Why?

Prayer of the Day:

As we read this Scripture in the book of 2 Samuel we see that both Ripzah and David honored the remains of Saul and his sons. Help us to understand how honoring Your people can bring blessings on our lives. Help us to honor those who You have put in authority over us. Help us to show respect for them as the leaders that You chose them to be. Help us to realize that in honoring Your people we honor You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
