If It Hadn’t Been for the Lord by My Side

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 124:1-8. Psalm 124 is A Song of degrees written by David. The people sang it while going to Jerusalem. David acknowledges that if it hadn’t been for the LORD being on their side Israel would have been destroyed. Have you ever felt like David did?

There were men who rose up against them with great wrath. The enemy could’ve swallowed them up if the LORD hadn’t been on their side to defend them. David praises the LORD for protecting them from the enemy. He proclaims that the LORD, who made heaven and earth, is the one who helped them to win the battle. He gives God all the glory.

As long as we live on this earth, we’ll have people who come against us. As believers we have the greatest defense anyone could have. We have the LORD on our side. He is our helper, our comforter, our defender, our Savior, our protector, and our provider. We’re blessed to have Him on our side. When the enemy comes against us we can have the upper hand because the LORD is on our side.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 124:1-8

1 [[A Song of degrees of David.]] If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you give thanks that the LORD is on your side?
  • Name a time in your life when you knew the LORD was watching over you.
  • When have you experienced the LORD defending you against the enemy?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 124, where David reminds us that You are on our side. Help us to remember that You are our defender against the enemy. Keep us safe. Give us strength to fight the battles of this life. You are our rock and our redeemer. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “Unto Thee I Lift Up My Eyes” (Psalm 123:1-4)

Unto Thee I Lift Up My Eyes

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 123:1-4. Psalm 123 is another of the Songs of degrees, which the Israelis sang on their journey to Jerusalem. It is a song of praise to the LORD, lifting up the LORD, God of heaven.

The Psalmist reminds us as a servant lifts his eyes to his master and maidens to their mistress, even so our eyes are lifted to our God.

A servant or maiden honors and respects his master or mistress. They also look to their master or mistress to provide or them. In the same way we, as believers, we should look up to God with honor and respect. We should also look to God for provision and protection from the enemy.

The Psalmist cries for the LORD to have mercy on them, because of their strong contempt. He pours his soul out to the LORD saying it is overflowing from the mocking of the arrogant and proud.

Sometimes when things are going wrong in our lives or we are at a crossroads in our lives it is important to keep our eyes on the LORD. If we get our eyes on man and what is going on around us, we lose hope. If we put our eyes on God and focus on His greatness then our spirits will be lifted. I have experienced this in my own life, have you?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 123:1-4

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
3 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you lift your eyes to the LORD?
  • In what instances have you prayed to God for mercy?
  • When have you been discouraged when you got your eyes off of God and on your circumstances?
  • In what ways have you felt encouraged when you focused on God and His greatness?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 123, where the Psalmist reminds us to lift our eyes to You. You are our rock and our redeemer; You are the LORD of our lives. Help us to focus on You and not on what is going on around us. Help us to keep our eyes heaven bound. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:1-9)

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 122:1-9. Psalm 122 is A Song of degrees written by David, which the Israelis sang when they were going to Jerusalem. They went to Jerusalem to worship the LORD, give their sacrifices and give thanks to the LORD. This Psalm begins with one of my favorite verses, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

They looked forward to the times when they went to Jerusalem, the holy city where the temple was built. In the city were the thrones of judgment and the thrones of David.

The Psalmist exhorts us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and says, “They shall prosper that love thee.” He declares that peace and prosperity will be in the walls and palaces of Jerusalem, for his brothren and companion’s sake. It’s because of the house of the LORD that he seeks their good.

When we see things happening in Israel today and the problems that they have with the outside world, we have to remember God’s promise to Israel and that in the end God wins the war. He will be victorious. We need to spend our time praying and try not worry. Even though to us it may look bad from time to time, we have to remember that God is in control. The victory belongs to Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 122:1-9

1 [[A Song of degrees of David.]] I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:
4 Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
5 For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
7 Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.
8 For my brethren and companions’ sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.
9 Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you look forward to going to the house of the LORD?
  • Do you pray for the peace of Jerusalem?
  • In what ways do you enjoy fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 122 where David talks of going to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. Help us to look forward to worshiping You when we go to church and also in our daily lives. Help us to remember to pray for peace in Jerusalem. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Will Lift Up My Eyes” (Psalm 121:1-8)

I Will Lift Up My Eyes

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 121:1-8. Psalm 121 is another of the Psalms that is included in the Song of degrees. The Psalmist declares, “I will lift up my eyes to the hill, from where my help comes.” He declares, “My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” The LORD won’t allow your foot to be moved, because he doesn’t slumber or sleep.

The Psalmist assures the people with the words of this Psalm. He reminds them that the LORD God, the creator of the earth, is the keeper of Israel. He loves you and watches over you day and night. He is your protector. He is your provider. He is your helper. You can count on Him. He is always available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. You can always talk to Him. He will hear and answer your prayers.

Call on the LORD today through prayer. He’s waiting to hear from you. Cast all your cares and concerns on Him. He cares for you. He cares about what is going on in your life. He loves you always and forever.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 121:1-8

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

  • How does it make you feel to know the God of the universe loves you?
  • In what ways do you think of God as your protector?

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 121 where the Psalmist reminds us that You never slumber or sleep, but You keep watch over us day and night. He reminds us that You are the LORD of Israel. You are their keeper, and ours too. Help us not to worry about the events of today. Help us to take comfort in knowing that You are in control. Help us to find peace in knowing that in the end You win the battle and the victory is Yours. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Deliver My Soul, O LORD” (Psalm 120:1-7)

Deliver My Soul, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 120:1-7. Psalm 120 is the first of fifteen Psalms that is considered to be “A Song of degrees” which includes Psalm 120-134 and means they were sung when people traveled to Jerusalem.

The Psalmist in this Scripture is having a problem with people lying. He calls out for God to deliver him from those who have lying lips and a deceitful tongue. He asks, “What can be done to this lying tongue?”

Proverbs 10:18 says, “He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.”

Proverbs 12:22 tells us that “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

How does it make you feel when someone tells lies about you? The Psalmist says he has been around those who lie and despise peace for too long. He was weary of their deceitful ways. The Psalmist prefers peace, but when he speaks, the others with him are for war.

Have you ever lived around someone with whom you couldn’t get along? You tried to have peace, but all they wanted was to fight. They tell lies and make up stories that are not true. Being in a situation like that makes for a miserable existence.

I think this is what the Psalmist is speaking of. He was asking God for deliverance from the situation.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 120:1-7

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.
7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you know anyone who would rather tell lies than the truth any day?
  • How hard is it to have a relationship with those who are deceitful?
  • Are you an instrument of peace or of war?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 120, where the Psalmist asks for deliverance from lying lips, deceitful tongues, and those who hate peace. Help us to always be truthful and never deceitful. Help us to be instruments of peace and not of war. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
