Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to the Father” (Colossians 1:1-29)

colossians-1-3Give Thanks to the Father

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Colossians 1:1-29.

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you. – Colossians 1:3

Paul is writing to the church at Colossae. (Colossae was destroyed by an earthquake in the first century AD. The ruins are near the current city of Honaz in Turkey.)

Paul gives thanks to God for them and says he prays for them always. He talks about their faith in Jesus, hope in heaven and love for the saints. Paul prays for them that they will be filled with knowledge, wisdom and spiritual understanding.

What a beautiful model prayer for us. We should pray this prayer for our children, our fellow believers, our family, our friends and especially for ourselves that we might know the will of God. In verses 12 through 22 Paul gives a beautiful picture of Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

Colossians 1:1-29

1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,
2  To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3  We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
4  Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
5  For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
6  Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
7  As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;
8  Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.
9  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:
25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Things to think about:

  • Have you put your faith in Jesus? Why or why not?
  • In what ways do you give thanks to God for His blessings?
  • How does it make you feel when you read Paul’s letter?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the faith, hope and love we have in You. Thank You for the saints through the ages that passed down Your Word to us. Help us to be filled with knowledge of Your will, wisdom and spiritual understanding. Thank You for the redemption that we can have through your Son, Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of our sins. What a wonderful sacrifice He made for us. We love you, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for His Comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:1-12)

Give Thanks to God for His Comfort

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Corinthians 1:1-12. This is a letter from Paul, to the church of Corinth. Paul says, “Grace and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Paul then states that God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. When you are going through troubled times God is the only one who can give you true grace (unmerited favor), peace, mercy (kindness) and comfort.

Hebrews 13:5, reminds us “For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” In John 14:18, Jesus said, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” If you are a Christian, you don’t have to worry about being left alone. God is always there to comfort you and He has sent the Holy Spirit to be our comforter.

You may still have to go through the trouble, but having God on your side and knowing that He is working behind the scenes to help you will give you such great comfort. Then, Paul tells how you can use the experiences you have been through to help others and let them know God can get them through whatever they are experiencing.

For example, I had two miscarriages before I had my daughters. Many times I’ve been able to comfort and console others who’ve lost a baby because of my experience and knowing that God got me through that troubled time in my life. He eventually blessed me with two daughters and now six grandchildren.

Paul thanks his fellow believers for praying for him. We can pray for one another and encourage one another in this life as we look forward to the life to come.

You can be assured that God knows what you are going through and He won’t leave you or forsake you. Hold onto Him. Don’t try to handle things on your own. Trust God that He will deliver you through the trials of your life.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Corinthians 1:1-12

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:
2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.
12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

Things to think about:

  • Name a time when you experienced God’s:

Grace

Peace

Mercy

Comfort

  • How can we use this to help others?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are a God of mercy, peace, grace and comfort. Thank You for being with us all the time. But, especially we thank you for walking by our side in the troubled times. Help us to use the comfort that we have received from You to help others. Thank You for our brothers and sisters in Christ who pray for us. Thank You that we can trust You to deliver us through our troubles.  We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Verse:

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

– 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for the Victory through Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:51-58)

Give Thanks to God for the Victory through Christ

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Corinthians 15:51-58.

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:57

First Corinthians 15:51-52 speaks about when the Lord comes back to take us to heaven with Him. When we think of death and being put in the grave, it’s hard to think about even as Christians both for ourselves and for our loved ones. At least when you are a Christian you realize that it’s a temporary situation. We have the hope that God has given us through Jesus Christ. Death is swallowed up in victory. What does that mean?

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

First Corinthians 15:57 reminds us to give thanks to God for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who gives us victory over death. Verse 58 tells us to be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, and reminds us that our labor is not in vain in the Lord. Because we have the assurance of heaven and knowing we’ll be rewarded for our work here on earth we can give thanks to God for the victory we have in Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Things to think about:

  • Do you have hope in Christ? Why or why not?
  • Do you give thanks to God for the victory we have in Christ?
  • Think about the great sacrifice Christ made on the cross of our sins. In what ways can we give thanks to Him for the sacrifice He made for us?

Prayer of the Day
:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We give You thanks for the victory that You have given us through Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for the sacrifice that He made on the cross for our sins, so Your will might be carried out. Help us to know that our labor for You is not in vain. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “In Every Thing Give Thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

1-thessalonians-5-18In Every Thing Give Thanks

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

-1 Thessalonians 5:18

Paul reminds us, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Sometimes this is hard to do. It is easy to give thanks and be happy in Christ when everything is going good and all is well. It is much harder sometimes for us to remember to give thanks when things are going wrong or something bad happens in our lives.

There are things like deaths in the family, divorces, and tragedies of all kinds. How are we supposed to give thanks in these times? I have noticed in some of the darkest times of my life, that when I looked I saw blessings from God even then.

For instance, when my husband wrecked his truck and broke his back, it was a terrible time in our lives. But, there were so many blessings. There was a nurse right behind him who stopped to help him and called me. She got her husband to get all of my husband’s belongings out of the truck and took them to their house for safekeeping until my husband’s friend could go pick them up for him.

People were so kind and generous to us. People brought meals. They came and sat with my husband while I went to see my mama, who was in the nursing home at the time. His company filed all the paperwork for him to get paid.

One of the young men from our church came over to cut the grass the whole time my husband was out of work. He even surprised me and planted flower beds in front of my house while I was at the hospital with my husband. When I came home and saw my grass cut and all those flowers in front of my house, it was like God saying to me, I can take care of you.

As hard as the whole situation was, it was actually a time in our marriage when we grew closer to one another. My husband had to learn to depend on me and I had to learn to take care of him. If you take time to notice you will see that God takes care of you even in the bad times.

Sometimes it is not what is going on in our lives that matters as much as how we respond to what is going on in our lives. If we remember to find something to give thanks to God for every day it will lighten our mood and change our attitude into an attitude of gratitude.

Things to think about:

  • How can you be able to give thanks for everything?
  • Why does this Scripture say we should give thanks in everything?
  • What can we do to help us to be able to give thanks in everything?

Prayer of the Day
:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture from 1 Thessalonians 5:18. It reminds us to give thanks in everything. It’s not always easy for us to do that, but help us to remember that is Your will for us. Help us to find the blessings in whatever we’re going through. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for You” (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10)

1-thessalonians-1-2Give Thanks to God for You

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. Our feature verse is 1 Thessalonians 1:2, “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.”

In this lesson, we’re going to look at 1 Thessalonians 1. This is a letter from Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians. Paul starts the letter like most of his others saying grace and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul says he gives thanks to God for them always in his prayers. Why is Paul thankful for them? In verse 3 Paul tells them he is thankful for them because of their work of faith, the labor of love, and patience of hope in Christ. Paul acknowledges that they not only accepted the Word of God he preached to them, but they also received the power of the Holy Spirit.

Paul talks about how the Thessalonians were an example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia, and to every place, their faith in God was spread. We need to give thanks to God for our fellow believers whether they are fellow church members or friends.

Then in verse 10, Paul talks about them waiting for the return of Jesus, if they were waiting way back then, how much more should we be anxiously awaiting Christ’s return for us today.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Things to think about:

  • Why is Paul thankful for the Thessalonians?
  • How can we compare our church to the Thessalonians?
  • Are you an example good to those around you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for Your grace toward us. You knew that in our human state there was no way we could keep the law. Thank You for Your Son, whom You raised from the dead, and delivered us from the wrath to come. Help us to be faithful to You. Thank You for the love and the hope we have in Christ. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
