Daily Bible Reading “Marvelous are Thy Works” (Psalm 139:13-24)

Marvelous are Thy Works

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 139:13-24. My favorite part of this chapter is in verses 13-18 when David talks about how God knew us from the beginning when we were formed in our mothers’ wombs. He talks about all our members being written in God’s book of remembrance.

David declares that God’s thoughts of us are more than the sands of the sea. How does it make you feel to know God knows you so intimately? He loves you. He cares about you. In fact, He loves you so much He sent His Son to die on the cross for your sins.

In Matthew 10:30 and Luke 12:7 the Scripture says the very hairs on our head are numbered. Do you have any idea how many hairs are on your head? He knows us better than we know ourselves.

David then talks about his enemies. He says since God loves him so much and cares so much for him surely He will protect him from his enemies. David asks God to search his heart and see if there is any evil in his ways or thoughts. He asks God to lead him in the way everlasting.

Have you asked God to search your heart? Or are you afraid of what He might find? Believe it or not, God already knows the secrets of our hearts. But we may need God to reveal our thoughts and intents to us so we can make them right with Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 139:13-24

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

 

Things to think about:

  • How does it make you feel to know that God knew you from the very beginning of your life, while you were still in your mother’s womb?
  • How does it make you feel to know that God protects you from the enemy?
  • Have you ever asked God to search your heart to see if there is any wickedness in it, as David did? Why not do that today and ask Him to reveal to you the things in your life that need to change?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 139 where David talks about how intimately You know us. Thank You for Your protection from the enemy. Search our hearts to see if there is any wickedness in them. Cleanse and purify our hearts, souls, and bodies, and make us what You would have us to be. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “He Knows My Name” (Psalm 139:1-12)

He Knows My Name

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 139:1-12. This is a Psalm of praise to God from David. David contemplates how intimately God knows us. God knows everything about us. He knows about our daily life. He knows everything we think, say, and do. He knows about our choices and our habits. David finds it hard to comprehend how well God knows him; do you?

David acknowledges God’s omnipresence. He reminds us that God is everywhere we go. No matter where we go we can’t escape Him. God holds us in His hand. He guides us through our life. When we are asleep God watches over us. When we are awake and going about our daily lives He is leading us each step of the way. Even in the darkness, we cannot hide from God.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 139:1-12

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you know God as well as He knows you? How can you get to know Him better?
  • Do you care about God as much as He cares about you? In what ways can you let God know you care about Him?
  • How does it make you feel to know how much God loves and cares for you?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 139. As we look at David’s thoughts and see how well You know us we are humbled to know You care for us so much. We thank You for watching over us and protecting us. We thank You for leading, guiding, and directing our lives. Please search our hearts to see if there is any evil in them. If so, please forgive us and cleanse our hearts. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Will Praise Thee” (Psalm 138:1-8)

I Will Praise Thee

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 138:1-8. Psalm 138 is a Psalm of David where he proclaims that he will praise God with his whole heart. He declares that he will sing and praise God before the gods. David states that he will worship toward the holy temple and praise God for His truth and loving-kindness.

When David cried out to God He answered and strengthened him with strength in his soul. David declares that all the kings of the earth will praise the LORD when they hear the words of the LORD. They will sing praise to the LORD for He is great. Even though the LORD is mighty and powerful, He still has compassion for the lowly, but keeps His distance from the proud.

David knew that even though he may have trouble, God would revive him, and protect him against his enemies. He trusted that the LORD would make right that which concerned him because of His great mercy. David asked the LORD not to forsake him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 138:1-8

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.
2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you praise the LORD with your whole heart as David did?
  • In what ways do you worship the LORD?
  • How do you trust God to be your protector and provider?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this Scripture in Psalm 138 where the Psalmist, David, praises and worships You. Help us to praise and worship You with our whole heart, as David did. Help us to trust You to work on our behalf to perfect us according to Your will. Thank You for Your mercy which endures forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “By the Rivers of Babylon” (Psalm 137:1-9)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 137:1-9. In Psalm 137 the Psalmist speaks of the children of Israel sitting by the rivers of Babylon weeping and remembering Zion. Their captives mocked them by trying to get them to sing the songs of Zion. They asked, “How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?”

Can you imagine how they must have felt? Their city had been destroyed and they were taken into captivity for seventy years. Think about it, if they were twenty when the captivity began they would have been ninety when they were allowed to return to Jerusalem if they lived that long.

The Psalmist says if we forget Jerusalem let our right hand be maimed and our tongues cleave to the top of our mouths. They remembered how the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and how they were captured. They had to hold onto their faith; it was all they had. They trusted God to help them during this time.

Has there ever been a time in your life when all you had to hang onto was your faith in God? Did you cling to your faith that He would see you through the difficult times in life? How about faith that He loved you regardless of your circumstances? Did you have faith in God that He would work all things out for your good and His glory? Sometimes it’s hard to do, but sometimes that is all we have to hang onto. It is the only hope we have in this life when things are tough.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 137:1-9

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
4 How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?
5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.
7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.
8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.
9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

 

Things to think about:

  • What would it be like to be captive in a strange land?
  • Can you imagine your city being destroyed? How would it make you feel?
  • Can you imagine being mocked and ridiculed for your faith? How would you respond?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 137 where the Psalmist reminds us of the children of Israel’s great sadness during their time of captivity. They longed for You and to be in their own homes once again. They missed their city and mourned because of its destruction. Help us to be grateful for what we have and how we are blessed. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “In Everything His Mercy Endures Forever” (Psalm 136:17-26)

In Everything, His Mercy Endures Forever

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 136:17-26. This Scripture talks about how God slew some of the most powerful and well-known kings, which refers to Deuteronomy 1:4, “After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei.”

Then, He gave the land of the enemy to Israel as a heritage. God redeemed them from their enemies and they declared, “His mercy endures forever.” The Psalmist also talks about God providing food for all beings and gives thanks to the God of heaven. Not only does God provide for His children, but He provides for the beast of the field, the foul of the air, and every living creature on the earth.

Whether we look at His creation, His protection, and His provision for His people, or His judgment on the enemies of His people, we see God’s strong mighty power and we are reminded, “His mercy endures forever.”

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 136:17-26

17 To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
18 And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
19 Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:

  • Are you thankful to God for redeeming us from our enemies?
  • In what ways can we show our gratitude to God for the food He provides for us?
  • How can we give thanks to God that His mercy which endures forever?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You that You are our provider, our protector, our creator, and our judge. We love You, LORD and thank You for sending Your Son to be our Savior. Help us to always be thankful to You for who You are and what You do for us. We thank You that Your mercy endures forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
