God Leads His People

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 77:10-20. In the first part of chapter 77 Asaph talked about going through a troubled time, where he was so distraught that he couldn’t even sleep at night. Some of the things that help me when I wake up troubled in the night are to pray, quote Scripture, or sing songs of praise to God in my mind. These will help to satisfy my spirit and many times I will be able to fall back to sleep. What helps you fall back to sleep when you wake up at night?

Asaph remembered the years when God had His right hand of blessing on the people of Israel. He thought about the works of God and meditated on them and talked about them all day. It completely changed his focus. When we take our mind off of our circumstances and put them on God and His glorious works, our focus can totally change, as Asaph’s did. We can go from feeling defeated to feeling victorious because we remember that God is on our side. Has this ever happened to you?

Asaph reminisced about the wonders the LORD had performed and how He showed His strength to the people. He says, even the waters saw God and were afraid. He talked about a storm of thunder, lightning, and pouring rain. Doesn’t it get your attention if a bad thunder and lightning storm comes up?

He says God’s way is in the sea. Personally I love going to the beach and listening to the waves crashing. It’s such a comforting sound to me. In fact, I wish I was there now. It’s so refreshing to me.

Have you ever noticed when you are going through a very troubled time in your life and start meditating on God’s Word and talking about God’s wonderful works how your mood will change? Instead of feeling hopeless and in despair, you become hopeful and joyful.

Asaph reminds us how God leads His people like a flock of sheep. God uses different people to lead His people. In Old Testament days He used Moses and Aaron, among others. How is God leading you? Who is God using to lead you in your life?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 77:10-20

10 And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
11 I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
17 The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Things to think about:

Do you like thunder storms or do they scare you?
Have you ever thought it sounded like God was angry when it thundered?
How does it make you feel to read God’s Word and think of His goodness?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 77. Asaph reminds us of Your wondrous works. He reminds us of the sounds of the storm and the power You display during the storm. He reminds us how You lead Your people. Help us to remember the works of Your hands. Help us to remember the strength and power You have to work in our lives. Help us not to be afraid when the storms of life arise, but to put our faith in You to take us through the storms. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “I Cried to God” (Psalm 77:1-9)

I Cried to God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 77:1-9. Psalm 77 is a Psalm of Asaph to the Chief Musician, Jeduthun. The Psalmist says he cried out to God and God heard him. He talks about being so troubled that he continued to worry in the night and wasn’t able to sleep. He couldn’t get comfortable because his spirit was overwhelmed; so much so that he couldn’t even talk. Have you ever been that troubled? I sure have. We’ve probably all experienced times in our lives like he described.

He says he remembered God and complained. Do you ever complain to God? Asaph remembers times when he would sing songs in the night. He began to think that God had deserted him. Have you sometimes wondered if God deserted you? Do you ever think that God’s promises will fail you?

If you are in the midst of this kind of turmoil in your life, remember that God loves you and even though things might not seem like they are going to be okay, don’t lose faith. Remember the times in the past when God has brought you through a troubled time. If He’s done it before, He can do it again. Have faith in God, He will see you through.

I know there have been times in my life when the circumstances were so bad that I didn’t know if I would survive them, but God is faithful to see us through these troubling times. He may not always deliver us from the trouble, but He will help us to get through it. Many times when we go through hard times in our life it will cause our faith to grow stronger because we have to depend on God to see us through them. Sometimes if we pay attention we will even see where God sends us blessings in the midst of our heartaches.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 77:1-9

1 [[To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph.]] I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
7 Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

Things to think about:

When was the last time you were so troubled you couldn’t sleep at night? What did you do?
How often do you complain to God about what is going on in your life?
What do you do when your spirit feels overwhelmed?
How has God helped you in the past to get through these times of trouble?
How can knowing if God has helped you in the past give you faith that He’ll help you through this time?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 77. Thank You for being there for us when we’re troubled. Thank You for loving us. Help us to remember Your ways and know that You’re always there for us. Help us not to lose faith and to put our complete trust in You to see us through the difficult times in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God is Great” (Psalm 76:1-12)

God is Great

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 76:1-12. Psalm 76 is a Psalm by Asaph to the chief Musician, to be played on a stringed instrument. He declared that God’s name is great in Israel. He is known in Judah. His tabernacle is in Salem. Salem was sometimes used as a shortcut for Jerusalem. His dwelling place is in Zion.

There was an attack on Israel, but God defeated the enemy. The Scripture tells us that the battle was so heavy that the arrows, bows, and swords were broken. Even the horses and chariots were destroyed. God poured out His wrath on the enemy to defend the meek. They feared the LORD God when they witnessed His mighty power.

The Psalmist declared, “Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.” Do you realize how great and powerful God is?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 76:1-12

1 [[To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.]] In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.
2 In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.
3 There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.
4 Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.
5 The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.
6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?
8 Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,
9 When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.
10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.
11 Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.
12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you show you honor and respect God?
What does it mean to have a reverent fear for God?
In what ways do you realize the power of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 76. We see where You defeated the enemy. Help us to honor and respect You as God. Help us to realize that You are all-powerful. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Unto Thee, O God, Do We Give Thanks” (Psalm 75:1-10)

Unto Thee, O God, Do We Give Thanks

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 75:1-10. Psalm 75 is a Psalm of Asaph. It is a song to the director of music, to the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Asaph gives thanks to God for His name and His wondrous works. This Psalm is thought to possibly be a speech that was made when David was appointed governor and was then penned by Asaph.

David declared that he would do the job that was appointed for him to do and would judge the matters that were brought before him as governor. David took his duties seriously. He knew that God allowed him to be placed in a position of authority. He didn’t take the job lightly. He wanted God and the people to know he would do his best to serve those over whom he’d been given authority. David promised to do his duty and judge the people fairly.

God will receive the congregation of the church one day. God will not only welcome us into His kingdom, but we will stand before Him as a righteous judge. Sometimes people only think of God as a loving God. He is a loving God, but He is also the judge of the earth. How do you feel about standing before God as your judge?

He warned the wicked not to lift up their horn against God. He reminded the people that promotion doesn’t come from the east or west, but from God, who exalts some and brings down others. He declared that the horns of the wicked would be cut off and the righteous would be exalted. He proclaimed that he would sing praises to the God of Jacob forever. This meant that he would honor God forever as well. Do you enjoy singing praises to God and honoring Him as your heavenly Father?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 75:1-10

1 [[To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.]] Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.
2 When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.
3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.
4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
9 But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

Are you going to be among the righteous whom God exalts or the wicked He cuts off?
In what ways do you give thanks to God?
What are some things for which you thank God?
What are some ways you worship God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 75.We give You thanks, dear God, for everything You provide for us. You are a great God. You are a righteous judge. Help us to repent of our sins and cleanse our hearts so we can be part of the righteous You exalt and not the wicked You cut down. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Arise, O God” (Psalm 74:13-23)

Arise, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 74:13-23. In the first part of Psalm 74, Asaph questioned God about why He allowed the temple to be burned and allowed the enemy to attack His people. In this part of chapter 74 Asaph proclaims to God how mighty He is.

Asaph speaks of God’s strength and power. He talks about God as the creator because He is the one who created the world. He is the one who made day and night. He is the one who set the sun and moon into place. He is the one who made the seasons. Asaph proclaims how marvelous the works of God are.

Asaph was trying to reassure the congregation that God was still in control and that He had the power to defeat the enemy. Do you remember to thank God for all His marvelous works and all the things He has done for you?

Asaph told God even though He had done all these things the enemy blasphemed Him by tearing down the temple and attacking His people. He begged God to arise against the enemy and cause him to turn away or be defeated.

Many times in the Bible during times of war God would cause what seemed to be natural disasters to happen to confound the enemy and cause them to be defeated. When we look at all the things God has done for us, it is hard to believe there are people who don’t believe and are against Him. We need to pray that they would see the light and come to know God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 74:13-23

13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.
14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
15Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.
17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.
18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.
19 O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
20 Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.
21 O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.
22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
23 Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you praise God for His wondrous works?
How do you thank God for His creation?
What makes you realize that there are enemies of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 74, where the Psalmist reminds us of Your marvelous works. Help us to show gratitude to You for all You have done for us. Help us to praise and thank You for those things. Help us to remember You are our creator, You are all-powerful, You are mighty and You love us. Protect us from the enemy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
