Daily Bible Reading “God Leads His People” (Psalm 78:40-52)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:40-52. Asaph refers to the children of Israel when they were wandering in the wilderness. He says they provoked and grieved God in the desert. God even sent signs and wonders yet they turned their backs on Him and forgot how He delivered them from the enemy.

God turned the rivers into blood so they couldn’t drink the water. He sent plagues of flies and frogs to try to get their attention. God destroyed their crops with caterpillars and locust and cattle with hail and their sycamore trees with frost.

Their flocks were destroyed by lightning. God sent angels of evil among them. He smote the firstborn in Egypt and the heads of their tabernacles in the land of Ham because of their disobedience.

God tried to be patient with them and gave them every chance to get right with Him. But, they stirred up God’s anger, wrath, and indignation with their rebellious ways. Verse 52 tells us that God made His people go forth like a flock of sheep, as He led them in the wilderness.

We love to think of God as a loving God, and He is, but we don’t like to think of God as a just God, pouring His wrath out on those who disobey Him. This Scripture reminds us that God is both loving and just.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:40-52

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

 

Things to think about:

  • Can you imagine the turmoil the children of Israel went through because of their disobedience?
  • In what ways were the children of Israel disobedient to God?
  • What took the children of Israel so long to get the message?
  • In what ways do we do the same thing?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray as we read this Scripture that You would help us to see how the children of Israel stirred up Your anger against them; please help us to be obedient. Forgive us of the times we fail You. Thank You for Your son, Jesus Christ, who died and was resurrected to cover our sins. Help those who haven’t yet accepted Jesus as their Savior to receive Him into their lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Forgave Their Iniquity” (Psalm 78:32-39)

God Forgave Their Iniquity

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:32-39. In Psalm 78 Asaph tells us the people sinned against God and didn’t believe all His wondrous works. Because of their rebellion against God their days were consumed in vanity and their years were spent in trouble. When God slew some of them, the rest knew they needed to return to God. They remembered that God was their rock and their redeemer. How many times do we return to God when we are in trouble?

The people gave God what we call lip service. They professed God with their mouths, but their hearts weren’t right with Him. They flattered Him with their mouth, and then lied to Him with the same tongue. They were unfaithful to His covenant. God, being a compassionate God, forgave their sins. He could have destroyed them all; instead God turned His wrath away and spared their lives many times. He remembered they were only human, made of flesh, and were fleeting, like the wind, which passes away.

God is a God of wrath, but He is also loving, kind, and compassionate. He loves His children and gives them every opportunity He can to repent of their sins and turn back to Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:32-39

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

Things to think about:

  • Do we tend to call on God when we are in trouble?
  • Have you ever been guilty of saying you love God, but not living for Him?
  • How can we have pure hearts before God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78. It reminds us You not only want us to profess our faith in You, but to live it out. Help us to have pure hearts before You. Help us to love You with all of our hearts. Forgive us of the many times we fail You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Wrath of God” (Psalm 78:19-31)

The Wrath of God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:19-31. In this Scripture Asaph talks about how the children of Israel spoke against God even after He had done so much for them. As they were wandering in the wilderness they questioned how God would provide water for them. He had Moses perform another miracle for them by using his staff to hit a rock and water flowed out of the rock and gave them plenty of water for all of their needs. With examples like this why do we ever question whether God can meet our needs?

I know when I lost my job it was devastating for me. My salary was half of our income at the time. I worried about how we would pay our bills. I was afraid there wouldn’t be enough money to take care of our basic needs.

God had to show me that He was my provider and He could provide for me any way He chose. I had to humble myself and accept that God had chosen my husband to work and provide for our family’s needs.

Shortly after I lost my job my husband got another job paying one and one-half times as much as his previous job. He has continued through different jobs to increase his salary to provide our needs. I can honestly say we have never gone without our basic needs and God has supplied many of our wants, as well. He loves us and wants the best for us. He wants us to trust Him completely.

The Israelites wondered how God would feed them in the wilderness. He rained down manna from heaven every day to feed them, but that wasn’t good enough, either.

They complained because they wanted meat to eat so God caused birds to fall from the skies, so much so that they ate them until they were sickened by them. I guess this is a lesson for us to be careful what we ask for, because we might get it.

While they were still filling the lust of their flesh with the birds, God’s wrath poured out against them. He killed some of their men and brought the chosen men of Israel to their knees. It’s a sad day when God is forced to pour His wrath out against His children because of their disobedience in order to cause them to repent and turn back to Him.

If you are a parent, you know how it makes you feel when you have to discipline your children because they are disobedient. It grieves your heart to have to correct them, but you know you cannot allow their disobedient ways to continue because they will only worsen. At some point you have to pull in the reigns and stop the process from happening, or watch them destroy themselves in the process. It’s not easy, but it must be done. As parents we can get a little glimpse into the way it must make God feel when He has to correct our paths.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:19-31

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.
26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

 

Things to think about:

  • Are you thankful for what God has provided for you?
  • What causes you to complain about what you do or don’t have?
  • How can we show our gratitude to God for His provisions?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78. We see through this Scripture that You are all-powerful and You can supply all of our needs, whatever they might be. Help us to be grateful for Your provisions. Help us not to complain about what we don’t have, but be thankful for what You have provided for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Children of Ephraim” (Psalm 78:9-18)

The Children of Ephraim

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:9-18. In the first part of this chapter Asaph talks about teaching our children about God and the works of God. Now we’ll learn about the children of Ephraim. Ephraim was one of Joseph’s sons. He was the head of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Scripture says they turned their back on God during the day of battle. They didn’t keep God’s covenant and refused to keep the laws of God.

They forgot all the wondrous works of God which He had shown them. God performed mighty miracles in Egypt in front of their fathers, but they forgot about those things. God divided the sea so they could pass through it. He led them in the daytime by a cloud and at night by fire.

God caused water to come out of the rocks for them in the wilderness. Even to the point of having streams of water flowing from the rocks like rivers so they would have plenty of water. God did all this for them, but they sinned even more.

They provoked God to anger with their sin and rebellion. God provided manna for them to eat in the wilderness, but that wasn’t good enough for them, either. They wanted meat to eat instead of manna. Do we ever act ungrateful like the children of Israel did? How do you think it makes God feel when He provides for us, yet we grumble and complain about it?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:9-18

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

 

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the ways you remember God’s wondrous works?
  • Do you ever complain about the things God provides for you?
  • What are some ways we can be more thankful and grateful to God for all the things He does for us?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78. Thank You for reminding us how the children of Ephraim acted. Help us not to behave in this manner. Help us to remember Your wondrous works and to praise You always for who You are and all You do for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Remember the Works of God” (Psalm 78:1-8)

Remember the Works of God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:1-8. Psalm 78 is a Psalm of Asaph. He cries out for the people to listen. He says he will speak in parables. He talks about teaching the children the ways of God and the mighty works of God. We’re to pass God’s ways and His Word from generation to generation.

Some of the ways you can help teach the younger generation about God is by teaching your own children or grandchildren, nieces or nephews, neighbors or friend’s kids about Him. We could also teach Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. In what ways do you help teach the younger generation about God?

One of the laws of God back in the Old Testament was that the people should teach their children about God. How are the children going to know if we don’t tell them? The purpose of each generation teaching the next generation about God is so they can have hope in Him, and know His Word and live according to it. Then, they won’t be like their forefathers who were stubborn and rebellious against God. Their hearts weren’t right with God and their spirits weren’t fully trusting in God. Do you feel like your heart right with God today? If not, why not take time to pray and ask God to forgive you of anything that is standing between you and Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:1-8

1 [[Maschil of Asaph.]] Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

 

Things to think about:

  • What are some ways we can teach children about God?
  • Why does Asaph tell us that we should teach the children about God?
  • What does the Scripture say about the forefathers?
  • How can we help our children to live Godly lives?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78 which reminds us that we are to teach the children about You and Your wondrous works. Help us, LORD, to teach them and to set the example before them of living a life dedicated to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
