Daily Bible Reading “Wine is a Mocker” (Proverbs 20:1-10)

Proverbs 20 1Wine is a Mocker

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 20:1-10. As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that wine is a mocker, intoxicating drinks cause commotion: and those who are deceived by them are not wise. Why does the Scripture say this about wine and other intoxicating drinks?

Getting intoxicated by drinking too much wine or other alcoholic beverages can cause people to make bad decisions, which can lead to other problems.

Making a habit of drinking too much on a regular basis can lead to alcoholism, which can cause all kinds of trouble in a person’s life.

Let’s look at the other Scriptures from this passage:

The fear of a king is like a roaring lion: whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own soul.

It is an honor for a person to cease from controversy: but every fool will be meddling.

A lazy person who refuses to plow because of the cold; will be begging at the time of harvest, because they have no food to eat.

Counsel in the heart of a person is like deep water; but a person of understanding can draw it out. Many times the answers to our lives are hidden deep inside of us, but a good counselor can help draw the answers to our life situations out of us.

Most people will proclaim their own goodness: but who can find a faithful person?

The righteous person walks in integrity: their children are blessed after them.

A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away evil with his eyes.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? We can’t cleanse our own heart. Our heart can only be made pure by the cleansing of the blood of Jesus.

In the Old Testament people would sacrifice animals for their sin. But, since Jesus died on the cross, He became our sacrifice. Only through accepting Him as our Savior can our hearts be truly cleansed from sin.

Divers weights, and divers measures, both are an abomination to the LORD.

Things to think about:

  • What does this Scripture say about wine and other strong drinks?
  • What does this Scripture say will happen to a lazy person?
  • Has your heart been cleansed from sin by the blood of Jesus?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that wine is a mocker and intoxicating drinks cause commotion. Help us not to be deceived by it. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who is the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

by Deborah H. Bateman

About the book:

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 has already published in a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.
