How to use Twitter

The first thing you have to do is you need to create an account and a profile and a user name. You can only have one user name per email address. Go to: http://twitter.com

Once you have your profile established you can start to follow people and invite friends to follow you.

On the Home page you can see the tweets of all the people you are following. You can send your tweet messages. You have 140 characters in which to send your message. You can reply, retweet, or favorite your friends messages.

Click on @connect to see who has followed you, retweeted your tweets, and tagged your post as a favorite. Send your friends a message thanking them for following, RTing, Faving, or reply to their message.

#Discover gives you some of the top tweets. It also gives suggestions of people for you to follow. You can find friends by clicking on Find Friends and then clicking on yahoo, Gmail, aol, Hotmail or invite them to follow you via email. You can click on categories to search for people you may be interested in following in certain categories.

There is also a place that shows you some of the hot topics under trends. It will show hash tags that are being used a lot or other words that are used a lot.

You can also link your twitter account with your Facebook account so when you send a tweet Twitter will forward it to Facebook.

I like to create what I call “Tweet Sheets” for each one of my book, blogs, free days for books, etc. That way I can copy and paste them to schedule my tweets. I can keep adding to them and don’t have to constantly reinvent the wheel. I made up a schedule for my tweets. I have a schedule for each blog, site and book. This helps me to spread my tweets out throughout the day.

*Tweetreach-To see who is following you back and delete inactive accounts.

Buffer-will schedule your tweets throughout the day

TweetDeck-adobe product you can download free-it is a dashboard for facebook and twitter.

Twitter Local-for local Twitter news

Twitpics-to share pictures and videos on twitter

Tweetchat to organize your posts for a chat.

*Paper.li-you can create a newspaper of sorts and it will show posts from different people you follow.

Social Media Tips – Use it Or Lose It

I have used social media to great success. New clients, building relationships on all levels for all areas, etc. I recently held an online contest and gave away 25 of my manuals filled with my company and affiliate product links. I am able to use the opt-n email addresses to send company info they can use in developing their business further. This has been a very important and productive strategy and is bringing in big business, win-win. The increased business is not only from the email marketing, but also from the links within the free manuals.

My success with social media has been booming since starting with it. My company blog is great for keeping clients and supporters informed about what is happening, and for helping people just finding us learn what we are all about.

Twitter is my tool for connection and interaction. I am doing a series of interviews with writers on the blog and have found several to interview via Twitter. It is conversational, and I like the equalizing factor – everyone, big-time or small-time, has the same 140 characters to work with and it’s all on you to make those characters sing.

My advice is to stay focused but not narrow. Sometimes I have nothing to say about my business – so I have “Writer of the Week” interviews and social media tips which are user generated content for the blog. I look for new media-related news stories to link in my Twitter feed. I try (with varying success) to keep posts regular to avoid “out of site, out of mind” issues that stem from staying off newsfeeds for too long. And if you want feedback, ask for it. Social media is still evolving so you might as well push the boundaries and see what happens, because even if it only works for you it still works.

Social media is about engagement and having and interaction, not promoting. Try to aim to be the person at the party that, shows interest in others, listens attentively, asks good questions, can hold an audiences attention with interesting and relevant content, oh and you need to be an authentic and just generally an all round likeable person. Ask question get interaction with your audience, such as Victoria Secrets doesn’t splash a two for one sale on their status feeds constantly, sure they show up and coming promotions and sales but they mix it up by asking questions instead. For example they might ask for interaction by asking what your favorite colored slip is or which was the most comfortable Victoria Secrets bra you’ve ever worn. (Obviously targeting the female audience). The visitor is encouraged to interact and is more likely to keep coming back

Don’t Come Across Desperate

“Like us on Facebook” and “Follow us on Twitter” are everywhere. I find it kind of desperate how the social media culture tells customers to “Like” and “Follow” them. Surely, if your marketing was interesting and engaging it would be a given that they would “follow” or “like” you anyway? Remember to think what’s in it for them and then work from a place of power not need.

Be Accessible

Make it simple and easy for your audience to stay in touch with you. Social plug ins such as “Share this”, ” Add this” or “Digg-Digg” are all easy to install on your site and show up as many of the social networking sites that you load up and make it quick and easy for your fans to share your content with their friends on any network. Then there are Facebook Business or “Fan Pages” that give the visitor a chance to “like” your page. This gives you the opportunity to market to them by way of updates to keep the conversation going.

In summary these tips are designed to be just that, a bit of “food for thought”, to bear in mind when you are setting up your social media marketing campaigns. My other recommendation is to think about enlisting the help of a mentor. There are reputable companies available online that you can team up with that are affordable for smaller businesses and have the social media systems, training and support available so you don’t have to do it on your own. Why not have your own supply of social media tips and strategies on hand 24/7 when you need them.
