Daily Bible Reading “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matthew 6:1-13)

The Lord’s Prayer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 6:1-13. In this Scripture, Jesus talks about when we are giving alms, which is a donation to the poor. We shouldn’t make a big deal of it before men, but we should do it in secret. Jesus says if we do it to be seen of men, we have our reward, but if we do it privately and only God knows about it, He’ll reward us openly.

This is something we need to think about, not on at the Christmas holidays, but all the time. If we give gifts to people or help people who are in a needy situation, we don’t have to let everyone know what we did. We can do it from a heart of obedience to God and gratitude for what He has done for us. Be thankful to God that you are able to help someone else. You could be in their situation.

Jesus goes on to talk about when we pray, we shouldn’t do it as a public display, but we should pray to Him in secret and He’ll reward us openly. Jesus gives us an example of how we should pray. It is called The Lord’s Prayer. It is considered to be a model prayer. That doesn’t mean this is the only way we can pray or the only thing we can talk to God about; it is an example for us to follow.

The first thing we are to do is to acknowledge God as our heavenly Father, then ask for His kingdom to come and His will to be done in earth as it is in heaven. After that we can ask for our needs to be met, for example “give us this day our daily bread.” Next, we ask Him for forgiveness and to keep us from temptation. At the end of the prayer we acknowledge Him again. Prayer is a very important part of our Christian walk with God. It is our way of communicating with Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 6:1-13

1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Things to think about:

  • When you give alms do you keep it between you and God?
  • Do you make a habit of praying to God?
  • When you pray do you acknowledge God as your heavenly Father?
  • Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and God as your heavenly Father?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this example that Jesus gave of how we are to give our alms and how we are to pray. Help us to follow His example and remember that we should not do these things to be seen of men, but as a way to honor You. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Scriptures Relating to an Eclipse” (Psalm 19:1 and other Scriptures)

 Scriptures Relating to an Eclipse

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 19:1 and many other Scriptures relating to the heavens and the eclipse of the sun and moon. The eclipse of August 21, 2017 will stretch across the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, SC. The last total eclipse in the US was 99 years ago on June 8, 1918. The next eclipse in the US is expected April 8, 2024 which will cross from east to west, along with the 2017 eclipse which will cross for west to east will create an “X” across the United States. There are those who believe that a solar eclipse may have specific meanings. Some believe it is a sign of judgment from God. Some believe there are certain statistics that line up with biblical prophecy. Curious about what the Bible had to say about the eclipse I discovered these Scriptures that relate.

Some people believe that Jesus was born around or during the time of an eclipse and the Scriptures indicate that His return will be around or during the time of an eclipse.

Psalm 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Isaiah 13:10 – For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Ezekiel 32:7 – And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.

Joel 2:10-11 – The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

Joel 2:31 – The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

Joel 3:15 – The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

Amos 8:9 – And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

Proverbs 8:27 – When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

Matthew 24:29 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Mark 13:24-25 – But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

Luke 21:25-27 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Revelation 6:12-13 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Revelation 8:12-13 – And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

I am not trying to say that the eclipse has anything to do with the coming of the Lord. The Scriptures say nobody knows the day or the hour of His return.

But, as you experience the eclipse of 2017, I suggest you search the Scriptures for yourself to see what the significance of an eclipse may have on biblical prophecy or the signs and wonders of God. After all, God created the heavens and the earth. He has total control of how they operate and what the future holds for humanity and for the earth.

Things to think about:

  • What similarities of an eclipse do you find in these Scriptures?
  • What most intrigues you about an eclipse?
  • How can we use events like an eclipse as an opportunity to share God’s Word?
  • How can we prepare for the return of the Lord?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge You as the creator of heaven and earth. We thank You for the beauty of Your creation. We pray that You will help us to search the Scriptures and look for signs of the return of the Lord. Help us to prepare our hearts and to share the Gospel message with others so they too can know You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
