How Excellent is Thy Name
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 8:1-9. Psalm 8 is a Psalm of David. It’s what is called a Messianic Psalm. David is writing this Psalm to the Chief Musician upon the Gittith. The Gittith is a musical instrument. This is a Psalm of Praise. David starts by saying, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who has set thy glory above the heavens.”
David says, “Out of the mouth of babes, you have ordained strength because of your enemies.” Jesus refers to this Scripture in Matthew 21:16, “And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?” God desires for us to praise Him.
Jesus says in Mark 10:13-15 that we have to become as a little child, “And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.”
We have to put our faith in God as a little child has faith in his father. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
We have to seek God. He is not going to force us to love Him. Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you…” If we seek Him and search for Him, He will open the door and accept us as one of His children.
David talks about the creation of the earth; how God put the stars and moon in the heavens with the work of His fingers. Not only did God create the earth, He created man, the animals, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea. Genesis 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
“What is man, that you are mindful of him?” God created man to be a little lower than the angels and gave him dominion over the earth including the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air. God created man to fellowship with Him, but we disobey God. Why does God still care about us? Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
God loved man so much He sent His Son, Jesus to live here on earth and to die on the cross for our sins. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
David ends this Psalm praising God and saying, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.]] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

- How does it make you feel to reflect on all the good things God has done for you?
- What are you thankful for?
- In what ways do you thank and praise God?
Prayer of the Day:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 8. David reminds us of how much You love us. You created people and the world we live in. We thank You for caring for us. When we failed to obey You, You sent Your Son to die for our sins. When we think of how much You love and care for us we should be overflowing with praise for You. We even fail at worshiping and praising You. Help us LORD not to take You or the things You do for us for granted. O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! We love You LORD. We thank You and praise You! Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day.
