Daily Bible Reading “I Trust in the Mercy of God” (Psalm 52:1-9)

I Trust in the Mercy of God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 52:1-9. Psalm 52 is a Psalm of David concerning a situation that happened with Doeg the Edomite, who was a chief herdsman of Saul. The event is described in 1 Samuel 21-22. I encourage you to go to 1 Samuel and read these two chapters. It will help you to better understand this Psalm.

David went to Nob to see Ahimelech, the priest. David lied to Ahimalech and asked him for something to eat and for a weapon. Ahimelech gave David holy bread because that was all he had available. He also gave David a sword that belonged to Goliath, the Philistine, whom David slew in the valley of Elah.

After a series of events, Doeg, under Saul’s direction, killed all the priests. David was distraught over this incident and wrote this psalm. David accused Doeg of lying, but actually, Doeg told the truth about what he saw take place, but he did it with evil intentions against David. Do you know anyone who operates like this?

David says that Doeg was a man who trusted in his riches and found strength in his wickedness and not in God. Do you know anyone who puts all their trust in their wealth and their evil ways instead of putting their faith and trust in God? David says that God will punish Doeg for what he did.

David describes himself as a green olive tree in the house of God. He trusts in the mercy of God and will praise Him forever. What does David mean by this statement?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 52:1-9

1 [[To the Chief Musician, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.]] Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
6 The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:
7 Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
9 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.

Things to think about:

  • How do you keep your tongue under control?
  • In what ways do you show you love good more than evil?
  • How can we always strive to tell the truth?
  • In what ways do you trust in the mercy of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Psalm of David. We thank You that we can see through this Psalm that even when David went through tough times in his life he still put his faith and trust in You. He had faith that You would handle the situation. Help us to stand strong even when the circumstances of life are hard. Help us to put our complete faith and trust in Your mercy and love for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

About the book:

The Book of Psalms: Part 2 Chapters 31-60 by Deborah H. Bateman is 27th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 2 Chapters 31-60 contains thirty-five Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
