Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet is a Daily Bible Reading Study by Deborah H. Bateman. Psalm 119 is located in the center of the Bible and is the longest chapter in the Bible. Psalm 119 is about the importance of God’s Word in the life of the Psalmist and in your life as well.

Daily Bible Reading “I Have Chosen the Way of Truth” (Psalm 119:25-32)

I Have Chosen the Way of Truth

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:25-32. This portion of Scripture in Psalm 119 starts with the Hebrew letter DALETH, which is the fourth letter in the Hebrew alphabet and represents the number 4. It also represents the letter D and means doorway. Hebrew letters not only represent a letter, they represent a word, and a number.

The Psalmist admits that his soul clings to this earth, but asks God to restore him to God’s Word. He declares his ways and asks God to teach him the statutes of God. He wants to understand God’s precepts, so he can talk of His wondrous works.

The Psalmist says his soul melts with heaviness and asks God to strengthen him with God’s Word. He requests of God to take the habit of lying away from him and help him to walk in the truth of God’s Word. He has studied the laws of God and wants to walk in the light of them. He asks God to enlarge his heart so he can run in the way of God’s commandments.

Have you ever had a habit that you knew was against the will of God? The Psalmist had a habit of lying. We should take his example and when we know we are doing something against God’s will in our lives ask Him to forgive us and help us to walk in His way.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:25-32

25 DALETH. My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

26 I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.

27 Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

28 My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

29 Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.

30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

31 I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame.

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.

Things to Think About:

Do you desire to understand God’s precepts?

Do you like to talk about the wondrous works of God?

Have you ever had a problem with lying as the Psalmist did?

Do you choose the way of truth?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119, where the Psalmist reminds us to walk in the truth of Your word. Help us to desire to know and live in the truth. Keep us from choosing the way of lying. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Help Me Keep Thy Word” (Psalm 119:17-24)

Help Me Keep Thy Word

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:17-24. This portion of Scripture starts with the Hebrew letter GIMEL, which is the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Because of the shape of the letter some think it may have derived from a camel, but it said to be a rich man running after a poor man. The Psalmist tells God to deal with him bountifully so he will live and keep God’s word. He asks God to open his eyes so he can see the wondrous things from God’s law.

He declares that he is a stranger in the earth and asks God not to hide His commandments from him. The Psalmist says his soul breaks because of the longing he has for God’s judgments all the time. He acknowledges that God has rebuked the proud and cursed them because they don’t obey the commandments of God.

The Psalmist asks God to deliver him from reproach and contempt because he has kept His testimonies. He proclaims that God’s testimonies are his delight and his counselors. He uses the commandments of God as his guideline for life.

You have to remember that in the Old Testament they were living under the law and were condemned if they didn’t keep the law. In the New Testament, Jesus came, and redeemed us from the law, but that doesn’t mean we should live any way we want. We should still use God’s word for our guideline as how Christians should live and strive to live in the ways of the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:17-24

17 GIMEL. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.

18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.

20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments.

22 Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.

23 Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.

24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.

Things to Think About:

Do you treasure God’s word?

Do you long to understand more of the Bible?

Do you strive to live according to the Bible?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist declares his love for Your word. Help us to long to read, study, and understand the many things You have shared with us in the Bible. Help us as we strive to live out the word in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Will Not Forget Thy Word” (Psalm 119:9-16)

I Will Not Forget Thy Word

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:9-16.
This portion of Scripture in Psalm 119 starts with the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet, BETH. The Psalmist asks the question, how can a young man cleanse his way? The Psalmist answers by saying, take heed to thy word. He declares to God that he has sought Him with his whole heart. He requests of God not to let him wander from His commandments.

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 119:11, which says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” The Psalmist realizes the importance of hiding God’s Word in our hearts.

He praises God and asks God to teach him His statutes. The Psalmist says he has declared the judgments of God’s mouth with his lips. Do you quote Scripture? Quoting Scripture out loud helps you to remember God’s Word and helps it go from your head and mouth to your heart.

The Psalmist says he rejoices in God’s Word as much as riches. He promises to meditate on God’s Word and have respect for God’s ways. He ends this section by saying, “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:9-16

9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.

13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Things to Think About:

Do you take heed to the word of God?

Can you claim verse 11 as the Psalmist does?

Do you delight in the statutes of the LORD?

Do you make a habit of reading and studying God’s word?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us how important it is to hide Your word in our hearts. Help us to treasure Your word by reading and studying it every day. Teach us Your ways, dear LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Will Keep Thy Statutes” (Psalm 119:1-8)

I Will Keep Thy Statutes

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:1-8. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible with 176 verses. It is in the middle of the Bible, and it is an acrostic of the Hebrew alphabet. Although most acrostics are one verse, Psalm 119 is broken up into stanzas of eight verses with each letter. The number eight means “life from the dead,” because on the eighth day Jesus came back from the dead. We are going to break this chapter up into small bite-size pieces so it is easier to digest and we can take it all in.

This first portion of Scripture starts off with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet ALEPH. The Psalmist says, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.” Blessed are those who seek God with their whole heart. They keep His laws. They don’t practice sin, but walk in the ways of the LORD always.

The Psalmist professes to God that he knows God commanded us to diligently keep His precepts and confesses that he wishes he was able to do so, and then he wouldn’t be ashamed when he remembers all the commandments of God.

He declares to God that he will praise Him with a pure heart when he has learned of God’s righteous judgment. He proclaims that he will keep God’s statutes and begs God not to forsake him.

Even when we try with all of our might to walk in the ways of the LORD, we fall short, but God loves us and He will forgive us if we ask Him. He will help us and give us the strength we need to walk in His ways, if we diligently seek Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:1-8

1 ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.

2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

3 They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.

4 Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.

5 O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!

6 Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

7 I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.

8 I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.

Do you desire to walk in the ways of the LORD?

How can we learn the ways of the LORD?

What part does praise play in our relationship with the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us that those who walk in Your ways are blessed. Forgive us of the times we have fallen short of living the life You desire for us to live. Help us to walk righteously before You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
