Bless the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 115:1-18. In Psalm 115 the Psalmist gives glory to the LORD for His mercy and truth. He asks, why the heathen say, “Where is their God now?” Have you ever been asked that question? Well, this is the perfect answer for the question from verse three, “Our God is in the heavens: He has done whatever He has pleased.” God is in the same place He has been forever.

The Psalmist goes on to talk about the idols of the heathen. He tells us their idols are made by man’s hands from silver and gold. They have mouths, but can’t speak: eyes, but can’t see. They have ears, but can’t hear: they have noses, but can’t smell. They have hands that can’t hold anything, feet that can’t walk; neither can they speak from their throats. Those that make them and trust in them are the same.

Then, the Psalmist calls out to Israel, the house of Aaron, and those who fear the LORD to trust in the LORD, because He is their help and shield. He reminds us that the LORD is mindful of us and will bless us and our children.

The Psalmist declares that those who believe in the LORD, the creator of the heavens and the earth, will be blessed and we will bless and praise the holy name of the LORD forever.

Psalm 115:1-18

1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.
2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:
6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.
9 O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
12 The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.
14 The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.
15 Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth.
16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.
17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.

• What does this Scripture say about the idols of the heathen?
• In what ways do you trust in the LORD?
• What does the Scripture say about those who trust in the LORD?
• How do you praise and worship the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 115 where the Psalmist warns us about man-made idols of silver and gold. He reminds us that You bless those who trust in You. Help us to always put our trust in You and never worship any other god. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 4 Chapters 91-118 contains thirty-six Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day.
