Be Exalted, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 57:1-11. Psalm 57 is a Psalm of David that was written when he fled from Saul in the cave. David cries out to God to be merciful to him. He declares that he trusts in God and will find refuge in the shadow of His wings. How many times in your life have you been in a situation where you needed to find refuge in God?

David completely trusts God to protect him from his enemies. He trusts God to send down His mercy and truth from heaven. In the midst of David’s battle he praised and worshiped God. This is a good example for us. When the enemy wages war against us the best thing we can do is cry out to God for His deliverance, His protection, and His grace and mercy during our time of need.

Sometimes we just need to cry out to God when we are in trouble. He may not take the problem away, but He may change the circumstances or give us the strength and wisdom to endure the situation. Don’t try to handle every situation in your own strength. God is there for you. He wants to take care of you. Reach out to Him and ask for His help.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 57:1-11

1 [[To the Chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave.]] Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.
3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.
6 They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.
7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
8 Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
9 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.
10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.
11 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.

Things to think about:

• Why should we cry out to God in times of trouble?
• How can we let God know we trust Him to protect us?
• In what ways can we give praise, honor, and glory to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 57. Even when David was in trouble he found refuge in the covering of Your wings. LORD, we thank You that we can cry out to You and You hear our prayers. We thank You that You watch over us and protect us. Be exalted O God, let Your glory be above all the earth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 2 Chapters 31-60 contains thirty-five Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
