God Forgave Their Iniquity
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:32-39. In Psalm 78 Asaph tells us the people sinned against God and didn’t believe all His wondrous works. Because of their rebellion against God their days were consumed in vanity and their years were spent in trouble. When God slew some of them, the rest knew they needed to return to God. They remembered that God was their rock and their redeemer. How many times do we return to God when we are in trouble?
The people gave God what we call lip service. They professed God with their mouths, but their hearts weren’t right with Him. They flattered Him with their mouth, and then lied to Him with the same tongue. They were unfaithful to His covenant. God, being a compassionate God, forgave their sins. He could have destroyed them all; instead God turned His wrath away and spared their lives many times. He remembered they were only human, made of flesh, and were fleeting, like the wind, which passes away.
God is a God of wrath, but He is also loving, kind, and compassionate. He loves His children and gives them every opportunity He can to repent of their sins and turn back to Him.

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
Things to think about:
- Do we tend to call on God when we are in trouble?
- Have you ever been guilty of saying you love God, but not living for Him?
- How can we have pure hearts before God?
Prayer of the Day:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78. It reminds us You not only want us to profess our faith in You, but to live it out. Help us to have pure hearts before You. Help us to love You with all of our hearts. Forgive us of the many times we fail You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.
The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
