Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 8:1-9. Psalm 8 is a Psalm of David. It’s what is called a Messianic Psalm. David is writing this Psalm to the Chief Musician upon the Gittith. The Gittith is a musical instrument. This is a Psalm of Praise. David starts by saying, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who has set thy glory above the heavens.”

David says, “Out of the mouth of babes, you have ordained strength because of your enemies.” Jesus refers to this Scripture in Matthew 21:16, “And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?” God desires for us to praise Him.

Jesus says in Mark 10:13-15 that we have to become as a little child, “And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.”

We have to put our faith in God as a little child has faith in his father. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).

We have to seek God. He is not going to force us to love Him. Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you…” If we seek Him and search for Him, He will open the door and accept us as one of His children.

David talks about the creation of the earth; how God put the stars and moon in the heavens with the work of His fingers. Not only did God create the earth, He created man, the animals, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea. Genesis 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

“What is man, that you are mindful of him?” God created man to be a little lower than the angels and gave him dominion over the earth including the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air. God created man to fellowship with Him, but we disobey God. Why does God still care about us? Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

God loved man so much He sent His Son, Jesus to live here on earth and to die on the cross for our sins. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

David ends this Psalm praising God and saying, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 8:1-9

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.]] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

 

Things to think about:

  • How does it make you feel to reflect on all the good things God has done for you?
  • What are you thankful for?
  • In what ways do you thank and praise God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 8. David reminds us of how much You love us. You created people and the world we live in. We thank You for caring for us. When we failed to obey You, You sent Your Son to die for our sins. When we think of how much You love and care for us we should be overflowing with praise for You. We even fail at worshiping and praising You. Help us LORD not to take You or the things You do for us for granted. O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! We love You LORD. We thank You and praise You! Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Arise, Oh LORD” (Psalm 7:1-17)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 7:1-17.Psalm 7 is a song of David which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of a man David calls Cush, who was slandering King David. This man was from the tribe of Benjamin, the same tribe as the previous king, Saul, and was probably really Shimei, whose story is in 2 Samuel 16:5-14. The name Cush goes way back to the time of Noah. Noah’s son, Ham, called his son Cush.

David declares that his trust is in the LORD. He cries out to God to save him from those who are persecuting him before they, like a lion, tear him to pieces.

David tells the LORD he believes he is innocent of Cush’s accusations, and if he is, indeed, at fault in this situation, let the enemy defeat him. David calls out to the LORD to arise and save him. He tells the LORD to judge him according to his integrity and righteousness.

David asks God to let the wickedness of the wicked end, and to establish the just. David declares that God is his defense. He knows that God judges the righteous and is angry with the wicked. David’s enemy had prepared for battle.

David sings to and praises the LORD. His defense was truly the LORD.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 7:1-17

1 [[Shiggaion of David, which he sang unto the LORD, concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite.]] O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me:
2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
3 O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
4 If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)
5 Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.
6 Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.
7 So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high.
8 The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.
9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
10 My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.
11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
12 If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.
13 He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors.
14 Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.
15 He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.
16 His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.
17 I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.

 

Things to think about:

  • With whom was David in conflict?
  • What was the enemy’s defense?
  • What was David’s defense?
  • Have there been times in your life when you were falsely accused and the only defense you had was the LORD? Recall those times. What was the result of you putting your faith and trust in God to see you through those difficult times?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We see in this Scripture that David put his faith and trust in You. You were the only defense David had because he believed he was innocent of the accusations against him. Help us to trust You completely and know that if we are innocent and You are on our side we can win the battles of this life. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Heal Me, Oh LORD” (Psalm 6:1-10)

Heal Me, Oh LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 6:1-10. Psalm 6 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician on a stringed instrument. David cries out asking the LORD not to judge him in His anger.

David asks God to have mercy on him. He says his body is weak and he is anxious. He begs God to return to him, deliver him and save him. David says he is tired of his own groaning. David declares his bed is wet from his own tears.

Whether David’s grief is from a physical ailment that caused him pain and grief or from the people who were constantly hunting him down, we don’t know. But, we do know that David took his cares and concerns to God and he believed God would help him no matter what his trouble was.

David is in a state of grief because of his enemies. He tells the workers of wickedness to leave him alone, because God has heard his prayers. David asks God to let his enemies be afraid and ashamed.

David was fighting a battle with the enemy. Whether David was fighting a spiritual, physical, or mental battle, he knew who to call on in his despair. Have you ever felt desperate for God to deliver you and wondered how long it was going to be before He gave you relief from your situation?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 6:1-10

1 [[To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.]] O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2 Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.
3 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?
4 Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?
6 I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.
7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.
8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.
10 Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.

 

Things to think about:

  • What was David’s state of mind in this Psalm?
  • What are some things in this Scripture that clue us into how David was feeling?
  • What did David do about the way he was feeling?
  • What do you do when you are suffering?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to know from this Scripture that we can call on You in our time of need. Help us to have confidence that You will hear and answer our prayers. Help us to know that when the enemy attacks us You are there to help us fight the battle. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “What is Prayer” (Psalm 5:1-12)

What is Prayer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 5:1-12. Let’s talk about prayer. First we’ll consider the question, what is prayer? Prayer is a way of communicating with God. Prayer can be something we do individually or as a group such as in church. Different religions use different forms of prayer and some pray to different gods.

As Christians we pray to God, the Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. There are different forms of prayer, such as petitions, supplications, prayers of thanksgiving, and prayers of praise and worship. People may use songs as a means of prayer and worship of God. The Psalmists used songs to express their thanks and praise to God.

People pray for different reasons. Prayer may be a form of worship, asking for guidance or help, confessing your sins, or to express thoughts and feelings about an issue or feelings towards God. Intercessory prayer is when you pray for someone else. Most religions involve prayer in one form or another. Some religions are very ritualistic in how they pray, when, and who is allowed to pray, while others are at liberty with how they pray and with whom they can pray.

As Christians we use prayer more as a way of communicating with God and pray whatever is on our hearts and minds. We don’t limit our times of prayer to only when we’re at church, but believe we can pray anytime and anywhere. We don’t limit prayers only to the leaders of our church, but believe anyone can pray to God. First Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “Pray without ceasing.” This means we are to always be in a spirit of prayer or to pray continually. Prayer not only consists of spending time talking to God, but includes taking the time to listen to God as well.

As a sample of prayer we are going to look at Psalm 5, which is a Psalm of David. David petitions the LORD to listen to him and to hear his concerns. David acknowledges God as his King. He tells God about his thoughts concerning his enemies and basically turns them over to God asking Him to deal with them. At the end of this Scripture you will notice David says those who love and trust God should rejoice and be joyful, because God protects them and will bless the righteous with favor by shielding them from the enemy.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 5:1-12

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David.]] Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

 

Things to think about:

  • What is your prayer life like?
  • What are some of the things you include in your prayer?
  • In what ways do you thank God for all of His blessings?
  • How do you feel about sharing your needs and concerns with God?
  • Do you take time to listen to hear if God has anything He wants to share with you?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,
We thank You that we can come to You in prayer and You will hear and answer our petitions. We thank You that You love us and we know we can trust You with our lives. We thank You that if we obey You, we know You will bless us and show favor toward us, and watch over and protect us. You are our LORD and we love You. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Will Hear My Call” (Psalm 4:1-8)

The LORD Will Hear My Call

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 4:1-8. Psalm 4 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician upon Neginoth, which is believed by biblical scholars to be a stringed instrument. David called on the LORD. David called out to the LORD in prayer. David had confidence in God that He would hear and answer his prayers. There are many Scriptures that remind us we can call on God in our time of trouble and He will hear and answer our call. Here are a few of them:

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth” (Psalm 145:18).

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me” (Psalm 50:15).

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” (Isaiah 65:24).

“In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears” (Psalm 18:6)

“As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me” (Psalm 55:16).

“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him” (Psalm 91:15).

Have there been times of trouble in your life when you called on the LORD and He heard and answered your prayers? When we reflect on times past when the LORD has heard and answered our prayers it helps build our faith and confidence that He will hear and answer us again.

This is an evening Psalm. David talks about lying down and resting because he knew the LORD was watching over him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 4:1-8

1 [[To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David.]] Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.
3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.
6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

  • How does the fact that David believes God will answer his prayers affect him?
  • How does it make you feel knowing God hears and answers our prayers?
  • What are some of the times of trouble in your life when God has heard and answered your prayers?

The Book of Psalms: Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.
