Daily Bible Reading “The Danger of Adultery” (Proverbs 5:1-6)

The Danger of Adultery

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 5:1-6. Solomon tells his son, “My son, pay attention to my wisdom, and listen to my understanding: so you might guard your discretion, and so your lips may keep knowledge.”

He warns his son that an adulteress woman flatters with her mouth. Her lips drip words like honey from a honeycomb. Her words are smoother than oil.

Solomon warns his son that becoming involved with strange women can lead to destruction. Her end is bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet lead to death; her steps take hold on hell.

As you think about the path of life, remember her ways are unstable, that you cannot know them.

Solomon warns that if you’re not careful you can get involved in situations where you don’t realize the outcome. You may think at the moment it is a good idea, but the enemy has ways of tempting you into situations that become destructive.

You have to continuously guard your heart and your steps in life. You need to watch the choices you make. You need to be on guard against those who try to tempt you to do things that are not right in the sight of the LORD.

Even though Solomon is talking to his son, this warning can go both ways. Women need to be on guard as well. There are men who will try to entice you and convince you to do things that you will later regret or may come back to haunt you. We need to guard our hearts and protect our integrity by not allowing such situations to happen in the first place.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 5:1-6

1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.

Things to think about:

  • What is Solomon warning his son about in this Scripture?
  • Why does Solomon warn his son about strange women?
  • How does he describe the strange woman in this Scripture?
  • What does he say will happen in the end?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that Solomon is trying to pass his wisdom down to his son. He warns his son about getting involved with strange women. Help us to take heed to Solomon’s warning and realize that the decisions we make in life can destroy our testimony and our lives. Keep us from evil. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
