Daily Bible Reading “The Value of Wisdom” (Proverbs 8:1-11)

Proverbs 8 TheValue of WisdomThe Value of Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 8:1-11. In this Scripture, Solomon shares the value of wisdom. He says, “Doesn’t wisdom cry and understanding raise her voice? She stands in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.”

Wisdom cries out, to you, I call. Those of you, who are simple, understand wisdom: and, those of you who are fools have an understanding heart.

Listen; I speak of excellent things; and when I open my lips you will hear right things. My mouth speaks the truth; and wickedness is a disgrace to my lips.

All the words of my mouth are honest; there is nothing presumptuous or perverse in them. They are all simple to those who understand, and right to those who find knowledge.

Obtain my instruction rather than silver; and knowledge rather than gold. Wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things we desire are not to be compared to it.

There are some very wise and intelligent people in this world. There are people who have made millions of dollars because of their wisdom and knowledge. In this Scripture, Solomon reminds us that wisdom is more valuable than rubies, silver, or gold.

We can learn and become knowledgeable about all kinds of things, but the wisdom we learn from the Bible teaches us how to live godly lives. As Christians, this is something we need to know and strive to do. The wisdom that is shared in the Bible far exceeds the wisdom of man, it is inspired by God.

Where can we learn better about wisdom, knowledge, and understanding than from the Word of God? How do you show you value the wisdom that you learn from the Word of God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 8:1-11

1 Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
2 She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
3 She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
4 Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
5 O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Things to think about:

  •  What are some of the things Solomon compares to the value of wisdom?
  • In what ways do you value wisdom?
  • What does Solomon tell us about wisdom in this Scripture?
  • Who is the wisest person you know?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs, Solomon shares the value of wisdom. Help us to understand the value of wisdom and to treasure Your wisdom above all others, in our lives. Help us to take the wisdom we learn from Your Word and apply it to our lives daily, so that we can live righteous lives and set good examples for others. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse to Journal or Memorize:

For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

I AM: Jesus, the Son of God

by Deborah H. Bateman

About the Book:

Jesus asks his disciples the question, “Who do men say that I am?” Then, through different metaphors, He describes who He is. In the metaphors, Jesus describes Himself as the vine, the light of the world, the way, the truth, and the life, the door, the Good Shepherd, the bread of life, and the resurrection and the life.

In I AM: Jesus, the Son of God, Deborah H. Bateman shares biblical illustrations on each of these topics and includes the reason God sent Jesus to the world. This book will help you more fully grasp who Jesus is and His purpose in your life.

I AM: Jesus, the Son of God is the thirty-third book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book contains ten Daily Bible Reading lessons. Each lesson consists of a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scripture, a few questions for consideration or discussion, a prayer, and a Bible Verse to journal or memorize. This book is great as a personal devotional or a group Bible Study. Get your copy today. You will be glad you did.
