Daily Bible Reading “The Beatitudes” (Matthew 5:1-11)

The Beatitudes

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 5:1-11. This is a part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In this Scripture, we have what are called the Beatitudes. It tells us what it means to be righteous. Basically, this Scripture describes what a Christian should be like.

We are not to be proud people, but poor in spirit. We should be mournful or sorry for our sin, because only God can comfort us concerning our sin. We are to be meek, humble people. Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? Matthew 5:6 says those who do will be filled.

If we want to receive mercy, we have to be merciful to others. We are to be pure in heart, and peacemakers, not trouble makers. Jesus talks about His people being persecuted for righteousness’ sake, and He says, theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Notice that for each trait Jesus talks about, He also gives what the reward will be. If you would like to go deeper into this study check out my book Beatitudes: How to Live a Blessed Life.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 5:1-11

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Things to think about:

  • Do these characteristics describe you?
  • What does it mean to be poor in spirit?
  • Are you merciful to others?
  • Do you consider yourself to be pure in heart?
  • Are you a peacemaker?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this lesson that You taught about what traits Christians should have. These are big shoes to fill and we can only fill them with Your help. Help us to seek after righteousness and learn from Your Word, that we might be what You would have us to be. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
