Daily Bible Reading “Praise the LORD” (Psalm 107:22-31)

Praise the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 107:22-31. In this portion of the chapter the Psalmist reminds us to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Do you think of giving thanks to God as a sacrifice? What does it mean to offer a sacrifice?

In the Old Testament animal sacrifices were made as sacrifice for the people’s sins. In the New Testament Jesus was offered as a sacrifice on the cross for our sins. Today, we may sacrifice our time, money, praise, and good works for the LORD, not as redemption for our sins, but out of love and honor to Him. The Psalmist also encourages us to rejoice as we declare God’s wonderful works.

The Psalmist talks about how the fishermen see the works of the LORD when they are out on the boats catching their fish. When fishermen get into a storm they cry out to the LORD. God causes the sea to be still as He calms the waves and calms their fears as well. Jesus does the same for His disciples. The story is recorded in the Gospels in Matthew 8:23, Mark 4:35, and Luke 8:22.

I remember going fishing with my parents, grandmother, brother, and sisters one time when I was growing up. There wasn’t enough room for us all in one boat so Daddy rented another boat and tied them together so we could fish and not get lost from one another. A storm came up while we were out fishing. It is really scary when you’re in the middle of the water and a storm comes up. The waves start white-capping and rocking the boat. The water starts to splash overboard. I remember crying and praying my way back to the bank. I have never been so glad to get off the water and out of a boat in my life. Why do we wait until we are in a crisis to cry out to the LORD?

God wants us to talk to Him on a daily basis. He doesn’t want us to wait until we are in trouble. Instead of focusing on our circumstances, we need to focus on God and His ability to work on our behalf in our circumstances.

Several times in this chapter you will see the same verse: “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men.” You think the Psalmist is trying to get a message across to us?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 107:22-31

22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.

25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever been out on the water in a boat and a storm come up?
  • How does the storms of the sea compare to the storms of life we face?
  • Do you spend time daily talking with God or do you wait until trouble comes to call on His name?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 107 where the Psalmist reminds us to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving to You. We rejoice in Your wonderful works. Thank You for being by our side not only in the storm, but in our daily walk with You. Help us to spend time daily communicating with You and not wait until the storm arises. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Psalm 119 has already published a book called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 4 Chapters 91-118 contains thirty-six Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
