Daily Bible Reading “Listen to Me” (Proverbs 5:7-14)

Proverbs 5 father-son-talkListen to Me

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 5:7-14. Solomon is talking to his children telling them to listen and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Stay far away from her, the strange or adulteress woman, and do not come near the door of her house.

He warns them, you will give your honor to others, and your years to those who are  cruel. Strangers will be filled with your wealth; and your labors will be in the house of a stranger.

You will mourn at the end, when your flesh and body are consumed.
You will ask, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised correction?

You will say, I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, or listened to those who instructed me! I was almost in all evil in the middle of the gathering of the congregation.

Solomon reminds me of something I’ve heard my husband say, “Danger, Will Robinson, danger, danger.” Which is a quote from “Lost in Space.”

Over and over again Solomon is warning his sons and trying to keep them from walking down a dangerous path. He explains the consequences and end result of getting involved with strange women.

Do you ever do this with your children? We warn them and try to keep them from danger. We try to keep them from making choices that they will regret later. That is what Solomon is doing in this Scripture. He wants to make sure his sons know the dangers that are out there in the world. He doesn’t want them to head down the wrong path in life.

In this Scripture this is a father talking to his sons, but as mother’s, we too need to warn our children of the dangers in this world.

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.                          – Hebrews 12:1-2

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 5:7-14

7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!
14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the consequences of being with strange women that Solomon mentioned in this Scripture?
  • What did he say would happen to their wealth?
  • What did he say would happen to their bodies?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we hear Solomon repeatedly warning his sons about the dangers of living a rebellious life. Help us not to walk down the path of unrighteousness. Keep us safely on the right path loving and serving You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
