Daily Bible Reading “Hope” (Proverbs 13:1-12)

Hope

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 13:1-12. We are reminded in this Scripture that a wise son hears his father’s instruction: but a mocker doesn’t listen to reproof. What is the real difference between a wise person and a wicked person?

By the fruit of their mouth a person will eat well: but the soul of the faithless desire violence.

Those who guard their mouth keep their life: but those who open their lips wide will be destroyed.

The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent becomes prosperous.

A righteous person hates lying: but a wicked person stinks and comes to shame.

Righteousness keeps those of integrity: but wickedness ruins the sinner.

There are those who pretend that they are rich, but have nothing: and there are those who act poor, but they are wealthy.

A wealthy person may be able to ransom his life: but the poor doesn’t hear rebuke.

The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked burns out.

Only by pride comes strife: but those who are well advised find wisdom.

Wealth gotten by vanity will be diminished: but those who gather by labor will increase.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

The last verse in this Scripture is my favorite one from this passage. Have you ever hoped for something, but never received it? This passage reminds us that hope deferred makes the heart sick. But, when we are able to get the desires of our heart it springs up with life inside of us.

We may not have much hope in this world and the things of this world, but we can find true hope through our faith in Jesus Christ.

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the characteristics of a righteous person mentioned in this Scripture?
  • What are some of the characteristics of a wicked person mentioned in this Scripture?
  • What is the real difference between a righteous person and a wicked person?
  • Where can we find hope?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we see that there are many differences between those who are righteous and those who are wicked. Help us to choose to walk on the right path of life. Help us to make wise decisions and find our hope in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
