Daily Bible Reading “David Anointed King of Judah” (2 Samuel 2:1-11)

2 Samuel 2 David anointed king of Judah David Anointed King of Judah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Samuel 2:1-11. David prayed and asked the LORD if he should go to Judah. The LORD told him to go, so David asked the LORD where he should go and the LORD told him to go to Hebron.

So David took his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail, and all his men and their families settled in the cities of Hebron to live.

David followed the leadership, guidance and direction of the LORD and the LORD blessed David for his obedience.

The men of Judah came and anointed David as king over Judah.

They told David that the men of Jabeshgilead were the ones who buried Saul. So David sent messengers to Jabeshgilead to bless them for showing honor to the LORD and to Saul by burying Saul.

David wanted them to be honored for their service to the LORD and to Saul. So he told them that both he and the LORD would bless them for the duties they had performed.

David encouraged them to be strong and brave even though their leader, Saul, was dead. He also let them know that he had been anointed as king of Judah.

Abner the son of Ner, who was the captain of Saul’s host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim.
Abner appointed Ishbosheth king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and over all of Israel.

Ishbosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel. He reigned for two years. David remained king of the house of Judah for seven years and six months.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Samuel 2:1-11

1 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.
3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.
5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 Ishbosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Things to think about:

  • Where did the LORD tell David to go?
  • What happened to David when he arrived in Judah?
  • Who did David learn had buried Saul?
  • Who was appointed king over the rest of Israel?
  • Are you willing to follow God’s direction in your life or do you want to go your own way and do your own thing?

Prayer of the Day:

As we read this Scripture we see that David sought Your face concerning where he was to go next. You led him and blessed him for his obedience and willingness to go where You led. Help us to seek Your leadership, guidance and direction in our lives. Help us to obey Your directions. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
